The P0324 code is related to what’s called the “knock control system.” This is a key component of your engine that checks for a type of engine vibration that would be very common if your engine was running on an incorrect fuel and air mixture. This is not a message that your knock control system is accurately reflecting that there’s a problem. Instead, this generic powertrain code indicates that your knock control system did not offer a signal when your Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reached out to it.
More About Error Code P0324
A “knock” is a term that refers to a specific sound emanating from your vehicle. There are actually two different “knocks” — rod knocks are mechanical noises, generally described as a “tapping” sound from deep inside your vehicle, while ignition knock is a condition when the air-fuel mixture detonates at the wrong time. This code refers to ignition knock specifically. Usually, the knock control system looks for telltale vibrations that you will often see when the engine is poised for knocking, then tells the PCM, which adjusts the engine’s operation and tries to reduce knocking. As previously noted, this doesn’t indicate that the knock vibration is happening regularly, but instead that the system for detecting it doesn’t seem to be working.

The most common symptom of the P0324 code is just that the check engine light turns on. It is, in fact, possible that this will be the only symptom you experience. However, especially if the problem has been persisting for some time, you may find that your engine starts misbehaving, as it might not be able to detect when the engine should adjust its function. You may see reduced engine power and reduced fuel efficiency, and the engine might not speed up very easily. You may also hear loud noises from the engine, including engine knocking or a general mechanical sound that’s louder than the typical background noise.
The issue with the P0324 code almost always has to do with knock sensor failure. Most of the time, this product is simply due to a faulty knock sensor, which may extend to issues with the knock sensor harness or knock sensor terminals. You may either need to replace the knock sensor or find an electrical connection that you need to replace or adjust. In very rare cases, this could be an issue with the PCM, but the PCM very rarely faults, especially in such a specific way.
The initial expression of this trouble code may not seem that serious. The symptoms may not be very severe, and you might even be able to drive it with no issues except a visible check engine light. However, over time, a bad sensor can lead to serious engine damage, especially if your engine starts knocking regularly. Even if it only seems like an intermittent issue, you should always check these kinds of issues out early on, as it’ll make it easier to avoid damaging levels of engine vibration.
Most of the time, you’ll be able to drive a vehicle showing the P0324 code to your local mechanic without any issues. However, you should avoid driving it for an extended period of time, as the more you drive it, the more likely it will be that your fuel injectors will not provide the proper ratio of fuel and air, potentially leading to harm. If you leave it for long enough, you may even cause irreparable damage to the engine, which is much more expensive and difficult to fix.
The diagnostic process for the P0324 code requires you to test your knock sensor and sometimes the entirety of the knock control system. If you’re an advanced DIYer who knows how to do this and has the right tools, you might be able to discover the problem. However, most DIYers don’t know how to test the sensor system. And even if you do know, you might not be interested in buying the equipment. In these cases, an expert is a great choice.
Inspection is primarily an issue here because of the lack of equipment. Many people don’t have the tools they need to inspect knock sensor codes appropriately. Again, if you don’t have these tools, most people will recommend that you simply take your vehicle in for help from an expert, as they can utilize their tools and experience to find out what’s wrong before it develops into expensive repairs.
Most people dealing with a P0324 code are going to need an expert, as the knock sensor is not an easy thing to manage. This is especially true if you’re seeing other codes that are indicating more problems than just the knock system.
