The definition of code P0322 is “Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal.” This means that your vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control module (ECM) has indicated a problem with your camshaft position sensor (CMP) or crankshaft position sensor (CKP), with a specific voltage issue in one of the two circuits available. The generic powertrain code will usually apply to all spark ignition engines that are OBD-II equipped.
More About Error Code P0322
Your camshaft position sensor (CMP) and crankshaft position sensor (CKP) help inform the PCM about your vehicle’s engine speed. The CKP provides information about engine RPM, while the CMP gives information about the location of the camshaft, as well as camshaft timing or distributor timing. These sensors are critical to ensure that your vehicle functions properly, as many timing requirements need to be perfectly aligned for correct function. This code indicates a problem with the circuit that delivers information from one of these sensors to the PCM.

The most common symptoms of the P0322 code have to do with general drivability concerns. You might see different symptoms depending on how severe the problem is and what your vehicle’s specific make and model may be to tackle this problem. The engine may crank but not start, or may stall while idle. General engine performance issues are common, including a lack of power, increased fuel consumption, and misfires. You will also see the check engine light turn on. Sometimes, you might not see any symptoms outside the check engine light.
Most of the time, the P0322 code happens for one of two reasons: an issue with the crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor, or a circuitry issue, such as damaged wiring or poor electrical connections. In some cases, this code can also be triggered by existing engine misfires, which might damage the position sensors or otherwise knock them out of alignment. Very occasionally, the P0322 code can occur due to PCM failure or PCM programming issues, but this is uncommon.
The P0322 trouble code is extremely serious. It can result in a complete no-start condition and even develop into a no-start condition at seemingly random times. But continuing to drive with it may also result in engine damage. Your vehicle needs to know how fast the engine is going, or you risk overburdening your engine and causing severe damage and danger to the people in the vehicle. Don’t let the P0322 code remain unresolved. Tackle it as soon as possible.
You may be unable to drive with the P0322 code active in many cases. It’s common for this code to result in a no-start condition, which means you won’t be able to drive with it. However, you might see only general engine performance issues or even no perceptible drivability problems in some cases. Even in these cases, it’s best to avoid driving until you can fix the problem. You may not be able to tell that there are drivability problems, but those problems could still exist within the engine.
There are usually two main issues that can result in the P0322 code, so there aren’t many problems you need to look out for. The main concern is that these are extremely central problems within your engine, so if you don’t know how to handle the problems in these areas, you could easily end up creating worse problems in your attempt to fix them. Talk to a professional mechanic if you aren’t confident with your ability to test wiring and sensors critical to your engine.
Inspection is more difficult than the diagnostic process because you need to look at a lot of wiring. You’ll need a code reader, a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM), and a reliable vehicle information source, which might include wiring diagrams, vehicle repair guides, and even technical service bulletins. If you don’t have access to those things, don’t worry; many DIYers don’t. That’s where a certified mechanic can come into play and help you fix the problem without needing a follow-up repair.
Many people will desire extra help with the P0322 code, especially because of how critical the code is for maintaining a healthy engine. Plenty of places will give you the extra help you’re looking for.
First, you’ll want to find an auto repair shop in your area. This is a great starting point for codes that can be dangerous or impossible to drive with, as it helps you get the repair you’re looking for without being too far out of the way.
If additional codes appear on your diagnostic scanner, the OBD-II database from KBB.com can also help. This database will give you insight into the issues you’re experiencing outside of the P0322 code.
