OBD-II-equipped vehicles use diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) to identify the location of a problem and the part affected. P0221 code specifically indicates an issue with the throttle position sensor. It is a potentiometer that measures how open the throttle is. The more the throttle is opened, the higher the voltage reading, which is measured by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM is the main computer that controls the vehicle, and it determines how much engine power to deliver based on the throttle angle. If the PCM detects that the throttle angle exceeds or falls short of what is expected from a specific RPM, then the P0221 error code will appear. The B reference indicates a specific circuit, sensor, or area involved. KBB provides a comprehensive database of ODB-II Codes for troubleshooting problems.

More About the P0221 Code

An Electric Throttle Control Actuator is made up of the throttle control motor and a throttle position sensor (TPS). The TPS detects changes in the throttle valve movement and consists of potentiometers that translate the throttle valve position into an output voltage that is read by the PCM.

The PCM delivers a 5 Volt reference signal to the TPS and reads the returning voltage. Typical voltages can range from .5 Volts during idling to 4.5 Volts at full throttle. If the voltage from the sensor goes above or below the expected value for a specific RPM, then the PCM will present this code.

What Are the Symptoms of a P0221 Code?

A P0221 error code could present the following symptoms: check engine light illumination, stumbling acceleration or deceleration, black smoke emissions on acceleration, or inability to start.

Once the check engine light is activated, the car goes into failsafe mode. The current to the throttle actuator is cut, and the throttle valve is limited to just six degrees or less of opening. Note that this PCM failsafe mechanism can vary with each manufacturer and may also depend on the make and model of the vehicle.

The PCM controls the vehicle’s engine speed by regulating fuel injection and timing. If your vehicle has a P0122 code, it will significantly decrease performance and speed, causing difficulties in driving and accelerating. Your vehicle may also idle much higher than usual when stationary.

What Are Some Causes of a P0221 Code?

A P0122 code can be caused either by a bad throttle position sensor, a faulty pedal position sensor, a short in the wiring harness that affects the TPS, or floor mats that clog or obstruct the pedal position sensor.

How Serious Is the P0221 Code?

A P0221 code error is a moderately serious problem. It can affect the drivability because the engine will not be performing properly. This can cause issues such as an increase in pollutants, higher fuel consumption, and slightly reduced throttle response. The check engine light will be the only visible indicator of an engine problem.

Can I Still Drive with a P0221 Code?

It should still be possible to drive with the P0221 code, but lack of acceleration, stalling, and loss of power on the road could lead to unexpected stops. Stumbling acceleration will affect the comfort, performance, and safety of the car, so it is strongly recommended to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a P0221 Code?

It should still be possible to drive with the P0221 code, but lack of acceleration, stalling, and loss of power on the road could lead to unexpected stops. Stumbling acceleration will affect the comfort, performance, and safety of the car, so it is strongly recommended to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a P0221 Code?

Diagnosing a P0221 code may vary from one vehicle to another, but because it is a generic powertrain code, it may indicate similar problems.

If you aren’t familiar with troubleshooting codes, then it is best to consult with a certified mechanic. It would take the right tools and a thorough understanding of the issue to be able to do it yourself. It is possible to adjust the TPS to restore it to factory settings but be aware that if the tolerances are not strictly met, it would be better to just replace it.
