The P0046 generic powertrain code definition in OBD-II equipped vehicles indicates that there’s a problem with the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator or the boost control solenoid, which may activate, especially in older turbocharged vehicles, when the vehicle needs to use the turbocharger or supercharger. The boost control solenoid may also be called the wastegate control valve. Either way, it indicates a problem with your vehicle’s turbocharger.

More About Error Code P0046

Turbochargers and superchargers are considered “forced air induction devices.” These devices are air compressors, compressing the intake charge air and effectively increasing the amount of oxygen the vehicle can insert into the combustion chamber so that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Engine Control Module (ECM) can allow more fuel and increase the engine’s power. Modern vehicles with turbochargers or superchargers will also use internal valves to alter the boost. The P0046 generic transmission code indicates that the PCM or ECM has determined a problem, which may have to do with actual faulty boost pressure, faulty boost detection, or concern within one of the systems connecting to the electric actuator boost sensor.

What Are the Symptoms of a P0046 Code?

The most common symptom of a P0046 engine code is simply insufficient boost power. Problems with the supercharger boost control circuit may lead to a general loss of power during acceleration. Your engine idle should be normal if the P0046 code is the only problem, as only the acceleration will be affected. While the idle may sound normal, a malfunctioning boost may cause the engine to run roughly, have rich or lean fuel consumption issues, or even, in exceptional cases, misfire or backfire, although you should expect to see other engine misfire codes if this happens. Once the PCM has noted the circuit has an issue, your check engine light should also come on. This code usually causes the engine warning light to turn on.

What Are Some Causes of a P0046 Code?

Many issues can lead to a P0046 diagnostic troubleshooting code. The connections between the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger can have issues, including loose connections or bad connections, a bad gasket, or vacuum leaks. The connection between the turbocharger and the inlet pipe may also be loose. Sensors and connectors of many kinds may be bad, including a bad boost sensor or, in vehicles that use it, a faulty sensor for the waste gate. The boost sensor’s 5-volt reference circuit may have issues, including loose, corroded, or disconnected electrical connectors and other bad electrical circuitry. Finally, you may also be experiencing turbo failure due to internal oil leaks or supply problems.

How Serious Is the P0046 Code?

P0046 should be considered a high-code severity. Even though the issue may only be with the supercharger or turbocharger, this equipment is critical in speeding up your vehicle, even with light loads. You can experience many drivability issues with the P0046 code, and if left for too long, the issues may even result in internal damage, with severe engine damage a distinct possibility. Avoid driving the vehicle as much as possible when the P0046 code is active.

Can I Still Drive with a P0046 Code?

You should avoid driving with the P0046 automotive error code active. If it accurately indicates a problem within the engine, the P0046 code can create serious engine concerns when driving with it. Avoid driving with the P0046 code active, and talk to an expert to see whether it’s safe to drive to the repair shop or get a tow truck.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a P0046 Code?

The diagnostic process of the P0046 code is extremely difficult in most cases. As previously mentioned, there are a variety of potential causes for the P0046 code, and you need to test each component to ensure you know the cause of the problem. Replacing various components that commonly cause the P0046 code can be expensive and often won’t fix the problem. While obvious leaks and severe blade damage can be easy to spot, issues with the boost pressure sensor, a wobbly shaft rotation, or worn bearings can be much more difficult. The diagnosis should be handed off to an expert in most cases.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a P0046 Code?

As with diagnosis, inspection for a P0046 diagnostic trouble code can be difficult. Complete testing is mandatory, as the lack of engine performance can come from many problems, ranging from a defective control solenoid to a waste gate function problem to something else entirely. You also need to know how that system is connected to other parts of your engine and what bad wiring or damaged blades look like. You may need to know how to detect a faulty sensor, what the “normal range” looks like for various sensors, how to check the boost control solenoid valve, and many other components that factor into an engine boost system. Before inspecting for a P0046 code, it’s best to ask an expert for help instead.

Need Additional Help with Your P0046 Code?

Many people will need help with the P0046 fault code. Unless you’re an expert on your vehicle, you should talk to a professional about the issues associated with the P0046 code. A factory repair can be difficult and may require a follow-up repair if the lack of power returns or the engine speed doesn’t improve with the initial fix.

First, you’ll want to find an auto repair shop in your area. Because it’s often unsafe to drive a vehicle with a P0046 code, you should find a local repair shop, making it easier to drive your vehicle safely or get a tow truck to the shop.

If this isn’t the only code you see on a code reader, you can also get help with information about other codes. The KBB.com OBD-II system database will give you more insight into your vehicle’s issues.
