2023 Nissan TITAN XD Crew Cab Review

He has done this for the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader, Popular Mechanics, Mazda and Lexus customer magazines, plus a bunch of enthusiast sites and publications. During this zig-zag of a career trajectory, he has driven everything from budget Malaysian hatchbacks (yes, they exist) to scarily expensive Italian exotica.

Pros

  • Standard equipment
  • Great warranty
  • Comfortable cabin

Cons

  • One engine, one cab, one bed
  • Smaller trucks can be just as capable

What's New?

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay in top trims

The idea behind the Nissan Titan XD is sound. Make a truck that can do more than the usual full-size pickups like the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra, but tailor it for buyers who don’t want the size and expense of heavy-duty three-quarter-ton trucks like the Ford Super Duty (F-250) or Ram 2500 HD.

Since those innocent days of the 2016 model year when the Titan XD first appeared, though, the talents of smaller trucks have increased. For example, a Titan XD’s maximum towing capacity is 11,033 pounds. Not bad at all, but doesn’t beat the newer F-150’s 14,000 pounds. The heaviest payload a Titan XD can take is 2,406 pounds. The F-150 manages 3,325 pounds.

There are plenty of other factors to be taken into consideration, however, such as engines, driven wheels, cab styles, standard equipment, and ride quality. So don’t rule out a Titan XD too soon. Built in Canton, Mississippi, it’s still highly capable.

The regular Titan half-ton pickup is reviewed separately.

2023 Nissan TITAN XD Crew Cab Pricing

Driving the Nissan TITAN XD Crew Cab

There’s just one engine in the 2023 Titan XD range, but it’s a good one. This strong-yet-refined gasoline V8 makes 400 horsepower and enables a perfectly respectable towing figure of 11,033 pounds.

Overall, driving the Titan XD is enjoyable and not especially demanding. The ride quality is smooth whether there’s a load on board or not. Having assistance features like forward collision warning and blind-spot monitoring as standard is another plus.

Four-wheel drive is also standard across the board. The Pro-4X model adds hill descent control and an electronic locking rear differential, along with specialized off-road suspension components from Bilstein, extra under-body protection, and all-terrain tires.

Interior Comfort

Available only as a Crew Cab, the 2023 Titan XD truck provides spacious accommodations for up to six people. The lower two trims, S and SV, have 3-across bench seats in both rows. The outboard seats front and rear are exceptionally comfortable.

The SV has the option of two seats up front, which is the standard arrangement in the Pro-4X and Platinum Reserve versions.

Rear legroom is generous at 38.5 inches. The rear seat cushions can flip up and the seat backs can fold down, so there’s some versatility. The center console also has a large stowage space beneath the armrest big enough to take a laptop computer.

Following the usual pickup script, the luxurious Platinum Reserve version comes with leather upholstery and real wood accents.

Exterior Styling

Along with the crew cab body, the sole cargo bed offered with the 2023 Titan XD is a 6.5-foot bed (78.7 inches). Unless it’s the one-up-from-base SV, a spray-in bed liner is standard (it’s optional in the SV).

Every version has a removable and lockable tailgate with a damped opening action. Options here include LED lighting, a 120-volt outlet, and the Utili-track channel system.

Both S and SV trims come with 17-inch steel wheels as standard. Alloy wheels are fitted to the Pro-4X and Platinum Reserve, 18-inch and 20-inch respectively. Only the Platinum Reserve has running boards.

Favorite Features

1. SV Convenience Package
As its name suggests, this is an options bundle for the SV trim (costing $2,790). It includes a gooseneck hitch, so buyers of a new Titan XD can access the truck’s maximum towing ability. There are plenty more features as well.

2. Infotainment system
In particular, the one in the Pro-4X and Platinum Reserve models, since this has an extremely high-resolution 9-inch touchscreen. Wi-Fi and satellite radio are also standard in these trims.

3. Trailer Light Check System
Once a trailer is connected completely, drivers can check that all the lights and turn signals are working by standing outside and using buttons on the key fob, or access the same info inside the cabin. It’s standard in the SV and Platinum Reserve, optional in the Pro-4X.

4. Wireless Apple CarPlay
New this year in the Pro-4X and Platinum Reserve models. The two lower trims still require a cable; Android Auto users need one in any trim. At least some form of smartphone integration is standard throughout.

5. Utili-track
This consists of dual rails, along which movable aluminum tie-down points are positioned, enabling the optimum method to secure loads in the cargo bed. It’s standard in the Platinum Reserve, optional in the SV and Pro-4X.

6. Parking sensors
Rear parking sensors are part of the base S trim. They’re joined by front sensors in the Pro-4X, although the SV offers these as an option.

Engine & Transmission

Every new Titan XD truck has a 5.6-liter V8 making a robust 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque when supplied with premium gasoline.

This goes through a 9-speed automatic transmission to a standard 4-wheel-drive system with high/low gearing and a transfer case.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) doesn’t provide fuel economy estimates for trucks above the half-ton bracket.

5.6-liter V8
400 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm
413 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm

Impressive Warranty

The bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties both last for 5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever happens first. Most truck manufacturers provide 3-year/36,000-mile warranties, with powertrains covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. The Ram HD with a diesel engine has a comparable powertrain warranty of 100,000 miles.

2023 Nissan TITAN XD Crew Cab Safety

2023 Nissan TITAN XD Crew Cab Safety Technology

Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking

Some trucks don’t have driver assistance features as standard, so it’s good to see every 2023 Titan XD fitted with this system that also includes pedestrian detection.

Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Another standard feature across the 2023 Titan XD range, alerting drivers to vehicles in adjacent lanes or approaching as the truck is being reversed out of a parking space. Rear automatic braking is also standard.

Intelligent Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection

This 360-degree camera system is optional in the Pro-4X, standard in the Platinum Reserve. The Titan XD is quite a big vehicle with a large turning circle, so this can help when maneuvering.
