Positive Review
I bought it used and had a lot of work to do to build it up to what I wanted it to be, but now that its there, I love it! I couldnt afford a 4Runner on my college budget, but this has kept up with and performed more capably than the one I go offroading with. It eats gas, cant lie there, and it aint much in a race, but it powers through mud and up hills better than I would have ever thought! Great for winter driving. Its had a beating since I've owned it, but its stood up to everything I've put it through. The storage space is great since the seats fold down. Being a unibody instead of a body on frame design makes it hard to modify suspension-wise (lift). There are only a few options available to the Nissan off road enthusiast, and they are somewhat expensive. But as a college kid in a hick town I've loved this SUV and all its capable of. You'll likely need to change out the rear lower control arm bushings to get rid of a "death wobble" that comes from old factory bushings being worn out. Its a quick fix, and glad I did it because it was scary on the freeway when that sucker started to wobble. But for a lower base-price than the toyota, you can afford some fixing up. Hope this helps your decision.
Critical Review
After babying this car which I loved for years, I had only 115000 miles on it when a design flaw caused the engine to fail. Nissan had recalled 2.5 liter engines with the same issue but never recalled the 3.5's which had the same issue. search for Nissan 3.5 power valve screw - the screws drop out of the intake into the piston and destroy the engine. If you are looking at one of these used - don't.

Great off-road, great styling, and has comfy seats
Poor ride, poor reliability, atrocious gas mileage, expensive maintenance, and poor fit and finish:
I bought this car a little over a year ago. When I bought it it had 197,000 miles on the odometer. I replaced the struts and springs on the suspension, steering rack bushings, and the radiator which blew up on me. I did all the recommended maintenance but it still blew up. I sold it to my brother a month ago and he told me this morning that there’s a service engine light on. I went out and looked at it and it was running rich and knocking. The motor is bad now and only has 215,000 miles. I’m very disappointed because me and the previous owner took good care of it and I have receipts of all the work done and it still failed. I know that this is cheaper than a 4Runner but the Toyota will actually last. I had a 99 4Runner which I sold at 320,000 and it ran perfectly. The Toyota will be cheaper to maintain and will last longer
I bought my Pathfinder in April 2000. Now in Aug 2024, it has 210,000 miles on it and is still going strong. It still drives great in 2WD or 4WD. It handled driving in a mountain blizzard like a champ earlier this year and can still handle any terrain. If I didn't need a larger vehicle, I would keep it.
Great space, quiet ride, no mechanical problems
between 16-19.5 mpg
I kept mine maintained after purchasing my Pathfinder in March 1999, 1 year old returned lease vehicle with 13,000 miles. I have 107,000 miles on it as of 06/2024. It runs like a charm and I get many comments on how well kept it is. I love driving this vehicle. It helped to have 4WD when needed and even used 4L to climb huge mountain trails in Colorado. I wish for new running boards, they are the only parts rusting and I cannot find replacements.
VERY COMFORTABLE AND POWERFUL.
JUST TURNING CORNERS AT TIMES.
I LOVE MY 2003 PATHFINDER AND WOULD NOT TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING. I HAVE IT FOR 20 YEARS AND HAVE NOT HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH HER. AND NOTHING SERIOUS . SHE IS BEAUTIFUL, AND I LOVE THE POWER SHE HAS.
Timeless, Style, Quality, Rugged, Sporty
2005-21: 16yrs of ugly Pathfinder generations
I bought the 2004 Pathfinder SE 4x4 with the intention of trading it in after 5-7yrs but I didn't like the next gen model design so I thought I would skip a generation, besides I was averaging 10kmi/yr and I really loved the look of my 2004. After 10yrs and another generation I didn't like the look of I knew I was going to have it another 5yrs, and I have not had any repairs besides normal wearing items. Mobil 1 from the start and it was so comfortable with great handling and I always got compliments at most fuel fill-ups. I hand cleaned the factory alloys
It’s been an great car for me when selling real e
It’s 20 yrs old
This car just had a fine tuning at our mechanic’s shop. It has approximately 88,500 miles on it. Driver’s seat is slightly ripped and the paint is faded somewhat. It’s been well serviced over the years.
Smooth driving
Little bit of gas guzzler.
This vehicle has had one owner. Always maintained up keep of vehicle. Owner can no longer drive. 90 years old
Excellent handling, 4x4, spacious,
gas sucker,
97 Nissan Pathfinder SE (Sport Edition) 5 speed 4x4 Great Amazing car, I bought it in 2008 with 120k miles, now it has 300K miles, regular maintenance, and I think this car will last FOREVER, I use it every day for commute, it never let me down, always fires up at the first try, I only use 89 gas and I get around 16.8 mpg it doesn't matter if I drive in the city or the highway. Besides been a little gas sucker, this car is perfect, the interior of the car is in excellent shape, the exterior not so much (Florida's Sun burns the clear coat in any car), I upgraded the radio, to double din radio (Bluetooth, DVD, rearview camera, mp3...). The problem with the rear control arms was fixed using aftermarket polyurethane bushings and so far it has been 6 years without any issue. Also, I upgraded the rims from a 2003 pathfinder 16" and it looks better than the 97 model.
