"Long Term Owner"

Had to write about this car after using this site for so long....only fair. I do not work or have worked for Mitsubishi and am the orig owner. This is the best car I have ever owned. Best sized SUV, most comfortable, best driving position, best view out the windshield, most reliable. Only drawback is the mpg. Only negative was the dealer I purchased the car from, in NJ...really bad. If Mitsubishi still offered in US, my car buying search would be over.

"Too many repairs lately"

I've owned my 2001 Montero XLS since 2004. I bought it from CarMax in Sacramento, CA in 2004 w/47,000 miles on it, clean bill of health. I loved this suv until about 2 yrs ago....for the first time ever it failed SMOG testing (a must in CA)in 2011 and this yr for the same problem....misfire/coils. I had it repaired 2 yrs ago and now have to take it back so it can pass SMOG so I can re-register it this month. However in the last yr I've had to spend $$$ on costly repairs, despite the TLC and check ups I've given it in my 9 yrs of ownership. It's now having electrical issues, I can't open my huge moon roof, one of the pluses in purchasing it. It's going to be costly to repair. I had the Timing Belt replaced in 2010, according to my mechanic needs to be replaced again! Front Differential has been repaired 2 times in 2 yrs time. Rear Main Seal needs to be replaced. The suv is leaking oil like crazy, I have to check it every week to make sure it's not bone dry....AND my truck sits in my driveway all week....I use it 2 times a week!!! It's a good and reliable truck to have but not for more than 10 yrs! In closing, I've always had my truck maintained when necessary and repairs done when needed, I've kept receipts for all repairs.......tho I've done all I can to keep my truck, it looks like I will have to replace it soon. :(

She’s a beast!

I purchased my 2001 Mitsubishi Montero in April of 2023, with 130,000 miles on it. I have had her for About a year and a half now and she is my Favorite SUV so far. The gas mileage isn’t the best but as far as dependability and functionality this SUV a beast. We had a flood recently, and she made it through High waters with ease. The only thing I have had to do regular maintenance and I did have I transmission code come up about six months ago and it wouldn’t go out of first gear, I was able to disconnect the battery and reconnect the battery & she’s been going strong ever since. She honestly handles better than my hummer, and her functionality outweighs what I have experienced with my Range Rover. I had a lot of people try and point me in a different direction, but I really loved the body style of this make and model, I got her for a hell of a deal and I don’t have any car payments!

An Absolute Gem of a 4x4
Pros

Reliable, sturdy, great on and off road, comfort

Cons

Fuel economy, parts can be harder to get

So here's the deal... I'm a Jeep guy at heart. For years I drove Wranglers and Cherokees but the time came when I really needed a 7 seater for my growing family. I am not a fan of the Jeep Commander and I really didn't want a Suburban or a Tahoe. Honestly, I wanted a 4runner but used prices on those are nuts. After doing a lot of research I was very impressed by the design and engineering behind the Montero. I found one at a local dealership. It had a few issues but that wasn't a huge deal for me since I'm a mechanic and these are pretty easy to work on. I got a great deal on it because it had an oil leak and needed a timing belt service. It only took me a few days to fix everything. I was super happy with how clean the inside of the engine was when I had the valve covers off. It had no oil sludge at all after 135,000 miles. I got everything sealed up, replaced the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, the serp belt, and a few other minor things. It runs amazing and I absolutely love how it handles on and off road. To me, this vehicle is every bit as good as a 4runner but for less than half the price of a comparable Toyota. I'm very impressed with this vehicle overall. It's comfortable and my family loves to ride in it. Would definitely recommend to anyone, just make sure it is well maintained and that you keep up on your services. The timing belt must be changed on time in these. Also, oil changes should be done on time and with synthetic oil and the transmission should be serviced at regular intervals. These do have a tendency to develop torque converter shudder if the transmission fluid gets dirty.

Best vehicle I’ve ever owned

I bought it in 2003 . It has never let me down always gotten me to my destination in style. Regular maintenance is all I’ve done . It preforms to the highest standard both on road & off . I have Mickey Thomson tires on it so it literally goes anywhere. I absolutely love it I’ll never get rid of it wish I could get a new one .

I don't think there is better SUV out there
Pros

Great car amazing gas mileage

Cons

Nothing for now

I bought this car in 2020 so its 15 years old with 100,000 miles or 160,000 km in Canada. I'm more impressed with this car than I was with my sport BMW. I can't wait for next hunting season to take it out for a ride. And can't wait for spring to go for camping and fishing. Great car. Big surprise is gas mileage. It spending less than my wife's nissan juke. Last night I went to gas station after exactly 100km I put 8 litars of gas in it. Thats 30mpg. I almost fall on my BACK when I've seen that. I was expecting at least double. What else can I say. Prefect, perfect and perfect car. I belive we gonna stay together for many many more years. Once again great car.

This is a true SUV
Pros

Affordable, strong!!

Cons

Gas consumption

Is sad that this vehicle doesn't come to the US, we have this for 14 years, and it is so good, the only thing I fix was a ball bearing, shocks, pads, just maintenance!! Is amazing.

Best SUV hands down
Pros

HUGE sun roof, Rear HeatAir, 3rd row seating.

Cons

wish it had a little more horse power for towing.

Ive never really been a Mitsubishi guy. But after having one of these, I have to say it drives better than any SUV newer or older than I ever had. Even on ice, it does considerably better than my: 2009 Super duty, 2003 Trailblazer, or my wifes 2013 Chevy Equinox.
