Positive Review
Have driven this vehicle for 40,000 miles. No major repairs. Only maintenance, and minor repairs, most significant replaced the O2 sensors. Preforms as expected for an older V6, good pick up and climbs with 4WD pretty well. Gas at 14 - 18 MPG. Over all I'd do it again.
Critical Review
My Montero Sport has an extremely bad oil leak. I just had a diagnostic test done on it, and the guy at the Mitsubishi dealership told me that oil leaks are common in Montero Sports! They have a very bad design where the oil leak from the valve cover gasket leaks right into the alternator, which of course kills the alternator. I've gone through 3 alternators in this SUV in 6 months!

I am and still do enjoy this SUV. Im just thinking of selling it. Not sure yet... Just price checking...
Definitely fun to drive and dependable
No air conditioning in back.
When I purchased this suv, I was a little skeptical about purchasing it. But Im so glad I did because of the way it handled like a car, but it was high off the ground which I liked and I felt very safe in it. I getting ready to sell it after 20 years and its like loosing a good friend, but it served me very well.
Fun to drive, great off roading, comfy seating.
Expensive Parts,
Loved this car. got me where i needed to go with no problem. Parts are to expensive sometimes but you just gotta know where youre going. Got me to about 220,000 miles maybe a little less or more, then blew a head gasket in my driveway as i pulled in.
Overall fit & finish.

Bought it in 2004 with 40,000. Always garaged & maintained. One of the best vehicles I've owned. Very solid & super reliable
Off road capability, Looks, Visibility, Reliable
MPG, acceleration,
I have always loved the look of Montero Sports for awhile but never considered buying a SUV till I started a family. I wanted something to haul the kids around, practical to use, reliable, and could have fun with like some off trailing or camping. I have owned multiple Mitsubishis and my wife drives a 02 full size Montero Limited so why not another Mitsubishi SUV. I found mine through luck as I was particular what I wanted. Mine was a 1 owner, ALL service done at a Mitsubishi dealer and was a southern vehicle which I wanted because I didn't want to deal with rust issues. I purchased a 2000 Montero Sport XLS 4WD with just a tad over 150k...super clean and well maintained. Previous owner had zero issues with it other than a failing alternator which he told me about when I bought the vehicle. I did a full front engine service (water pump, timing belt, belts, pulleys, seals, etc) and replaced the alternator and 10k miles later not a single issue. Runs smoothly, shifts smoothly, motor operates quiet and everything works. I have driven the Montero Sport to the beach a couple times, a couple out of town trips and a handful of off trailing driving on Florida trails and its just as reliable and fun to drive the day I bought it. Its not the fastest SUV, but its not meant to be...it will take you almost anywhere though. IMO just as good if not better than a 4Runner and much cheaper to purchase.
reliable, decent gas mileage, roomy, great in snow
lack of head room in front fro me at 5' 10''
i purchased this car from a small family dealer ship in ashville nc on march 1st of 2011 with 170000 miles from $3000 i have drove it as my daily driver every day since i bought it i have went on long road trips to the beach and to Pennsylvania and it has never in the 4 years that i have owned it gave me a problem i have replaced the flex pipe on the exhaust and the throttle position sensor and other than that its been brake pads and oil changes and even at 258k miles it is one of the most reliable car i own... the only down side is my model does not have 4wd but i still have never got stuck even in 21'' of snow when i was in asheville one time the only thing i can say i have a problem with is it kinda lacks in head room in the front but in the rear its fine even the leather seats in the rear recline and it has a great sound system with a stock infinity sound system
Fuel Mileage, Space, Value, Service Costs.
Poor A/C Ventilation to the rear passengers
Owned Mitsubishi's for the past 12 yrs they have always been a good buy value for money that is!!!! Montero's are small but a great cheap small family suv. i have owned this 2000 Montero Ls for the last yr and used it every day to and from work places around TX and it has never let me down, it drives like a dream and my only grip that it should have more A/C vents at the rear to cool it down more on those Texas sunny days. i highly rate the montero to anyone looking for a small suv.
Very good driving. Have a b. guard bumper, tail like guards and roll bars.
