Positive Review

"Great, car but definitely a gas guzzler"

This car has been in my family since it was first bought. It very well built, although we did have to replace the transmission at 140k miles. It is pretty bad on gas (Best I was able to get is 24 mpg on the freeway), but what do you expect? It's a large car. Recently I was involved in an accident where a full size van ignored a red light, in doing so it hit the drivers side door going 40 mph. My car ended up flipping onto it's roof, but miraculously Neither me nor my passenger where seriously injured some cuts and bruises but that's all). This is an extremely safe car, and was worth all of the gas we put into it. Had I been in a sedan or smaller car it likely could've been a fatal accident.

"My only problem is the back door cracked and Mercr"

My only problem is the back door around the Mercury symbol is cracked and Mercury would not fix it. I purched my SUV with 3 miles on it and would buy another Mountaineer, if it was not for the cracked back door that Mercury would not fix. I see many SUV's like mine that is cracked also.

2005 Mercury Mountaineer
Pros

Smooth looks sporty

Cons

MPG

I am on the 3rd Mountaineer. I sold 1 to a friend (says a lot if you want to keep your friend). Wanted a new one. Still ran and drove great. 2nd one drove for 229,000 before engine stopped working. Still on my 3rd one 100,000 and still living it.

My 02 Mountaineer
Pros

Space, gas miles

Cons

none

Great car for family with 3rd, row seating/rear temp. control or single person who needs more space, but still save on gas & not too bulky in size to be a truck. Yes the gas miles & xtra space by putting the seats down was my favorite. I really have no complaints till this day 2021 still driving my shiny 20 Mercury Mountaineer everyday.

Nice but troubled
Pros

Nice style ,very roomy

Cons

Lots of transmission problems

This is a nice car but the transmission issues are not worth it. I need a new transmission just after I hit 60,000 miles. Thank God I had the extended warranty. As of this moment I again need a new transmission. Shame on Ford.

As good or better than any vehicle I have owned

In 198,000 miles, other than regular prescribed maintenance intervals (50K, 100K, 150K), all I have done to this car mechanically is replace the alternator at 154K miles, and the rear wheel bearings at 175K miles.
