Positive Review
This car has been a GREAT car goes in the snow when 4 wheel drive trucks couldn't. Great gas mileage and just fun to drive. No problems with it for mechanics. Have spent little on it for repairs over 13 years. Will gladly sell it to someone for their first car.
Critical Review
Wit my experience with my little cougar I must say it was a very stable tough car, even for it's girly looks. Unlike the newer designs now days, the Mercury Cougar is made of steel. The traction was always great, and loved taking it for long trips. The only thing I would change about the little Cougar is the struts and the fact that my motor started knocking at any early time than expected. I did buy it used though.

Car will not go into reverse, other than that the car runs great, clean inside, has new tires, and a sunroof.
I bought my Cougar new in 2002. It is now 2023. I have had almost no problems. 150K miles. I do the oil changes on time and had the break pads replaced, and new tires. The fuel pump failed and was replaced free under a recall. One break piston failed at 18 years - the repair was very reasonable. I can't believe how maintenance free this car has been. I think the master cylinder is worn, but as long as I drive at 55 mph, it does not overheat and is fine. I love it. I hate to replace it.
economy with style
inside is dated - by today's standards.
I owned this car for the past 15 years and very happy with it. On long trips, I got 29 mpg.... YES. Just this year the AC door isn't working and so I only get AC through the defrost/over the dash. Otherwise, no problems.
No dealers
Everything above and easy to use dash.
has a low phantom sound at times
this car can get 33 mi. to the gallon highway (driven at 55 mi. per hr.. We proved that on a trip from Mpls.,Mn. to Memphis,Tn. It is a joy to drive with quick pick-up, sportscar handling, rear seats that fold down so it can carry bulky items, 6 CD pack player(came standard) and the color (a deep Autumn Orange) is still getting me compliments in the parking lot. Styling is gorgeous and was miles ahead of it's time. I expect this car to go 150,000 mi. before retirement
Fun car to drive, looks and handles very nicely. Fun sports car
Sleek, great milage, reliable, durable,
no cup holders, back seats uncomfortable, small
I have had my 2000 Cougar for almost a year. I originally fell in love with the look. When purchased the rack n pinion was out but she kept trotting along for me. The maintenance on that was incredibly high. To work on this car is very difficult and everything is difficult to get to. It is small inside and not meant for someone with grandchildren. lol But all in all a very reliable and sexy car. I love my cougar and truly cant say any major complaints.
4 cylinder automatic !!
Hard to believe, but the car is my wife's and she hasn't driven it more that 50 miles in the last 3 years. We bought it new and always kept it in our garage. It was never driven in the winter. We are both 78 years old and she has quit driving all together. The car really looks like a red brand new car. Back seats never sat in.
