The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is back after a brief hiatus. The all-new generation of this automotive icon has an AMG-only lineup, meaning the SL is more of a performance-oriented halo car for Mercedes-Benz than ever before.
The 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL is powered by a choice of two different tunings of a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. The SL 55 has 460 horspower, while the SL 63 produces 577. In both models, this new 2+2 roadster employs a 9-speed automatic transmission. Also significant: For the first time, the SL has standard all-wheel drive.
There are a lot of cars that can produce a lot of power and go fast in a straight line. However, the Mercedes-AMG SL looks like a promising luxury sports car that blends stunning performance with a luxurious, high-tech interior and a composed, comfortable ride.
It competes with the M models of the BMW 8 Series, as well as the Lexus LC and Porsche 911.
The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors, but here's a general idea of what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-AMG SL models when purchasing from a dealership.
As of this writing, we haven’t spent any time behind the wheel of the new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL. The twin-turbo V8 powertrain with a 9-speed transmission and AWD is similar to the impressive Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-door Coupe. If the new SL drives like a roadster version of that car, it will be an absolute thrill, blending power and panache in a way that few can imitate.
We’ll update this review as soon as we get a chance to drive the AMG SL.
The interior of the Mercedes-AMG SL captures the car’s personality as being both luxurious and performance-oriented. The cabin design is high-class, and you’ll find top-notch materials throughout. We haven’t sat in these seats yet, but we’ve never been disappointed by the comfort level of a high-end Mercedes-Benz model.
The AMG SL has two back seats, but don’t expect them to be very accommodating, even for children. We also expect a tiny trunk on the SL. If you’re looking for practicality in a luxury sports car, consider the 4-door AMG GT.
The Mercedes-AMG SL does an excellent job putting an exotic spin on the Mercedes-Benz design language. The light signature is similar to the CLS Coupe, but the roadster body gives this car a decidedly sporty and premium look.
Every AMG SL is a 2-door convertible. The previous generation of the SL used a retractable hardtop design, but the new 2022 model returns to the soft-top convertible, which should yield a bit more trunk space.
SL 63
The high-performance Mercedes-AMG SL 63 model turns up the heat with 577 horsepower, AMG Active Ride Control, a Race drive mode, and a more aggressive appearance package.
4-Wheel Steering
On top of being the first-ever SL model with all-wheel drive, the new AMG SL comes standard with 4-wheel steering, contributing to its athletic handling and precise steering.
The standard powertrain in the Mercedes-AMG SL is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Other standard features you’ll find on the SL 55 include AMG Ride Control, 4-wheel steering, an MBUX infotainment system, Airscarf neck heater, AMG Dynamic Select with five drive modes (Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual), 19-inch alloy wheels, Nappa leather seats, a heated AMG steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, and much more.
Standard safety features in the Mercedes-AMG SL include Attention Assist, Active Distance Assist Distronic, Active Steering Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, and Digital Light that can project guidelines or warning symbols on the road.
The high-performance SL 63 model uses a more aggressively tuned version of the twin-turbo V8 powering the AMG SL. It also adds more standard features like Race mode, AMG Active Ride Control with active hydraulic anti-roll stabilization, AMG Track Pace, and an appearance package that includes 20-inch wheels.
Many of the SL 63 model upgrades are available for the SL 55 in the form of the AMG Dynamic Plus package, including Race mode, an electronic limited-slip differential, and yellow brake calipers.
Both new SLs are available in Touring or Performance trim.
The Touring has active LED headlights and massaging seats, plus a surround-view camera, a Burmester sound system, and an 11.9-inch center display.
The Performance comes with all the hardware of the Touring, plus a front axle lift system, AMG Active Ride Control, and the AMG Dynamic Plus package. This package, which includes an electronic limited-slip rear differential and yellow brake calipers, is standard on the SL 63.
All told, the new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL is a highly customizable car. Choose your paint color, wheels, interior colors and materials, and performance upgrades like ceramic composite brakes, active aerodynamics, and much more.
The 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL is available with two different variants of the same engine. A 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 lies under the hood linked to an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G automatic transmission. All AMG SL models are equipped with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive.
The base SL 55 model produces 469 horsepower, while the higher-performance SL 63 model produces 577 horsepower. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), both of the new 2022 SLs are rated at 14 mpg city/21 mpg highway/16 mpg combined.
