Positive Review
I researched compact SUV's for a very long time. I am always concerned first with quality and reliability. I purchased this vehicle under the assumption that the reliability will be very good over time. My past ownership of Mazda cars has indicated this should be the case. In a crowded field, it's maddening to make comparisons. Most of the compact SUVs offer similar features, but the devil is in the details. You need to pick a price point, and determine what you can get for that amount. I chose the CX5 because of the bang for the buck. The gas mileage is among the best, unless you decide to go with a hybrid. The RAV4 offers a hybrid, but you will spend well over 30K out the door for not even the top trim level. The mileage on the CX5 is surely not as good, but pretty darn close for a combustion engine. I felt I would never recoup the added cost (4-5k) to justify the hybrid in terms of fuel savings over time. All other compact SUV choices were not nearly as good as the CX5 when it comes to fuel economy. I passed on the Hyundai and Kia brands because of lousy fuel economy. I have a friend that has the Tuscon, and barely can achieve 21 mpg in mixed driving conditions. The Tuscon has a turbo and dual clutch tranny, and is about as powerful as the Mazda. I was nervous about long term reliability of a dual clutch tranny that is in its first year, and the turbo, so I passed on the Tuscon. You need to be very careful about mpg and engine performance. Many brands put in a under powered engine to achieve better numbers. Lack of pick up and acceleration is a safety hazard. I would not buy any brand at the lowest trims, including the Mazda, because of poor power profiles in base engines. With that said, the Touring model offers a great engine, with superb acceleration. It is appropriate for all driving conditions. Matched with the mpg, the engine choice in the CX5 touring was the deciding factor for me. No other vehicle performed as well or better. Driving this car is a blast. Great road feel and handling. Some mention the cabin is noisy. I say this is not true, unless you floor it. For that matter, every car in the class makes engine noise. While cruising along, this car is smooth and quiet. The car comes with many features, including the RV camera and cross traffic alerts. These are must have features in a modern car. The cross traffic alert is worth its weight in gold. Don't buy a car without this feature! The seats are very comfy, and the interior ergonomics just right. I love the fact I can control everything with my right hand using the turn knob/joystick on the middle console. This is a big plus. It feels like a much more premium car because of this feature. The best things about this car to me are: 1. Great styling 2. MPG 3. Smooth powerful engine (184hp) 4. Smooth shifting transmission. No CVT! 5. Interior very comfortable 6. Nicely laid out cockpit, and ergonomics. The cockpit is extremely well thought out. 7. Price/value is superb Every car comes with compromises. I was well aware of these before I purchased the car. 1. Stereo system is at best mediocre in comparison to other cars. 2. Although comes with Navigation, it's a fairly rudimentary system. It works fine as a basic Nav system, but lacks modern features, particularly live traffic alerts. It's included in the Touring model and above, so I can't complain. Other cars don't include this in mid level trims, and charge a lot for it. It's good enough. If I need live traffic alerts, my phone is fine. 3. You should not be texting and driving. However, a voice system to answer texts would have been nice to have. You can read texts on the dash screen, and reply only with preformatted message reponses. Mazda is a little bit behind on the tech features related to the dash screen. They obviously put more emphasis on the performance features and overall build. In the end, this is a car, not a rolling office. Hence, the little things I don't have are greatly overshadowed by the overall quality of this car. I have no buyers remorse or second thoughts whatsoever about my purchase.
Critical Review
I purchased a 2016 MAZDA CX-5 at the end of September 2015. By the first week of December, with about 1,300 miles, the engine light came on and the car became sluggish and would struggle to pick-up speed. I took the car to the nearest Mazda dealership. After a few days when I called them they told me that they did not know what was wrong and they were consulting MAZDA “tech-line” to figure it out. I picked up the car a few days later but even before I exited the dealership lot the light came back on. The service advisor aked me to leave the car and informed me that they actually did not know what caused the engine failure and had to confer with Mazda again. Everyday for the next week, I got a call informing me that they had no updates, and still had no idea what was wrong with the car. The only piece of information I was offered was that the problem stemmed from an error during the actual assembly/manufacturing of the car. The following week I got the most disturbing piece of information: an employee at the dealership had crashed into my car with another. I went in to the dealership the next morning only to be told by an employee, "Sometimes these things happen." I asked for the police report of how the accident happened but they said as the accident was in their premises they were not required to have a police report. I then asked for the dealership’s written report along with photos of the accident, which they refused to provide. All along we have been in touch with Mazda Customer Service. They said they understood the situation and that were looking into the matter and considering either to replace the car or give me a full refund. But when we asked for a firm written commitment from MAZDA they just danced around the issue. I told MAZDA that not only a brand new car has a serious defect but also the MAZDA dealership crashed my car and has caused significant depreciation. At this point MAZDA said that the dealership is not cooperating with them and they have no control over the dealership. It is now almost 5 weeks that my car is still in the shop and MAZDA is silent hoping that I will go away after hitting a wall at MAZDA.

drives like a luxury car-without the price tag
storage, but to be expected in a smaller car
very happy with the car so far. drives great even with 75,000 miles.
Dependable, fun, well designed
It came with poor tires... That's it.
The CX-5 had been an excellent car over nine years of ownership... I purchased it new. It is dependable, has high utility and is fun to drive. It is as close to the ideal car to own as I've had or can think of. It hasn't been lacking in any of the things that I've wanted to use it for... Drive in snow, pull a small trailer, room for two medium-large dogs in back, etc.
Nothing that outweighs the cons
Shut down in the middle of the street, constant tire issues
I've had my 2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring for almost 2 years now and every day I regret buying it. This was also my first car. 6 months in to owning it the car shut off in the middle of the road while driving. I managed to get the car to roll onto a side street and then had to push it to the side. I had it towed to a Mazda dealer to get it checked out and after a day in the shop they told me it was perfectly fine and couldn't find anything wrong with it. That particular issue hasn't happened again but the other annoyances haven't stopped. Each year like clockwork in December the stem on my right front tire has had a random leak that has caused the tire pressure to decrease rapidly. Multiple mechanics have fixed the stem and told me they have no idea what's causing the stem to rupture in that way. The tire pressure sensor also doesn't turn off on its own once you fill the tires after getting a low tire pressure warning. In the winter I get low tire pressure about once a week even with nobody supposedly being able to find anything wrong with the tires or wheels. I took the car into Mazda for my 100,000 mile maintenance and they supposedly found $4k worth of repairs that need to be done on the car... the car is only worth 8-10k!!! This is not a bad review to the dealership because the actual work they do is really great and the staff is very friendly and helpful. I am currently in the process of finding a way to get rid of this car and get something more reliable after having a new bout of noises. I currently have three different noises happening including a breaking noise, a noise that happens when driving, and a noise that pops up when turning hard to either side. There is also an unpleasant smell thats popped up in the past few days which yes, I'm sure isn't anything I brought into the car. Long story short don't buy this car. It seemed like a reliable affordable option to me when I was buying it as I had only heard great things about Mazda but turned out to be a gigantic headache.
My Subaru quit on me driving home on a rainy night in front of the MAZDA dealer in Puyallup Washington. I walked into he dealer looked at a few cars and decided on this one. Well this has been the only car I have ever bought at night and in a hurry, you see my son had just been in an car accident. that is that now the next morning I see that I had 3 burn holes in the front seat and I had left my car keys in the car, I found out that in this model of MAZDA it was easy to do. I didn't expect to keep the car very long because I just for what ever reason didn't think they were good cars. I bought the car in 2016 and have had great luck with it. I would recommend this car to anyone, the CX5 is great in the snow and just very nice to drive. The cars are priced well but the maintenance costs are way to high I believe.
To start I have the 2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring AWD, the leather is must with all the dirt and mess I can make. I use it a do anything vehicle. I do not have the money for a car and a truck. I have been beating up this car for about a year and half. I got it at about 30000 miles, and I have been very rough on it. I live in a semi-rural area and I "off-road" quite often, dirt and mud, lots of clay. It handles sand and dirt very well. Mud just make sure you have the speed. It must be said I do turn off the traction control almost every time I get in the car, it does not turn off stability control. I just need the wheels to keep spinning. I have hauled a set of 32'' tires in it for friends, pulled cars out of sand, and have hauled tools in it. It is a great at handling almost anything you throw at it, best part is it does not really change how it handles or acts. My mpg is less than predicted, only about 26mpg on a good day. On highway and on the way to work its ride quality is exactly what you expected from it, however off road, it feels better than any truck or full size suv I have drive, very smooth and tough. I have put the poor thing more than most will put their trucks through and it has never once give me issue with any of that. HOWEVER. The electronics in the info system needed updated and the heat of Florida fried my map SD card and a new one is 500 from the dealer, so I just google maps, that been the only problem I have ever had with it
I own a 2016 Mazda CX5 GT FWD, this is a great vehicle that's fun to drive, efficient, comfortable on road trips, and quick around town. The 2016 model is special as it has a sport mode feature adding higher RPMS and acceleration. My favorite features are the BSM, heated seats, sport mode, driver positon, cargo area. I was in a front collision with my vehicle and the airbags deployed, I walked away safely and cannot recommend the safety aspect enough, once repairs were done it drives still like new. Pros: Fun, Sporty, Economical, Great MPG, Low Maintenance, Quality Materials, Great ground clearance, safe, reliable, Bose sound system, luxury amenities, comfortable ride, small tank, Cons: No rear AC vents, tailgate isn't the tallest, factory recall on brakes calipers for squeaking (just replace). I would highly recommend this vehicle.
I have a 2015 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring and I still love it! I’ve never had any problems with it. It’s got great power and good on gas. The only thing I’ve been unhappy with is the road noise. I also have a 2003 Tribute. I’m now looking for my 3rd Mazda!
I have 2014 cx-5 315000km an still going it still handle greats and fuel mileage is still up around 700-750km a tank.I got to say when I replace it.It will be with another Mazda.
