Positive Review
I bought this truck off a friend for $700. I was originally going to get it into good running condition and sell it for a different vehicle. But once I started driving it I realized I liked it. It needed a front bumper and a tune up. Most of these old Mazda B series trucks and Rangers are in desperate need of a tune up and complete fluid change. Fuel filter Air filter (Not a high flow filter) Oil & oil filter Seafoam (through brake booster vacuum hose) Cap & rotor (for 1994 like mine) Thermostat & gasket Coolant system flush Transmission fluid (5 speed takes Mercon 3) Transmission shifter rebuild kit Rear differential fluid change (I used Mobil 1 synthetic 75w90) Its slightly underpowered for my location in the Ozark hills. It has a slightly hard time pulling large hills in high gears but its not a major problem. Its just noticeable. With the power problem some might benefit from fixing a stretched throttle cable which is very common. A Google search will show some ways of fixing it with a zip tie. The 3.0L version that I have after a complete tune up is very satisfying. I constantly get 20-23mpg. Once you factor in the MPG the small lack of power is very understandable. At first I did a complete tune up and I was wondering why I was still getting poor mileage (14-16). The only thing left to look into was the MAF (mass air flow sensor). I cleaned it with alcohol as instructed and reassembled it. Immediately I noticed a huge increase of MPG and it started running even better. It was not even that dirty which was surprising. The reason for not running a high flow air filter is because it will make the MAF dirty quicker. The transmission must be serviced with a shifter bushing kit. That's very important as if its not (or you don't inspect it to make sure everything's ok) all the broken pieces can fall down into the transmission. Mine was already like that and when I went to drain the fluid the pieces came out. I don't think it damaged the transmission as it still shifts good but I'm lucky. If you have a floppy shifter these bushings are the culprit. Also on the transmission while you have the shifter out and replacing the bushing kit (or inspecting it) there are three rubber plugs on the back of the transmission on the top that can be seen through the hole in the floor for the shifter. You will need to get the metal plugs that replace these as these three plugs leaking are the main killers of these transmissions. If one is in need of more power (like I'm after) then look into getting some Mornana 1.8:1 roller rockers. They are $450 but will make the truck perform much much better and the power will feel adequate. The truck handles very well. I have new wheel bearings, calipers, brake pads and rotors. And that helped quite a bit but the truck handles fairly good with some use on the front end components. The 3.0L (B3000) is the best engine in my opinion because of the MPG and power. 2.3L has the MPG but is gutless and the 4.0L has the power but not the MPG. The open differential in these trucks is the biggest downfall. It doesn't take much snow or even wet grass to stop the 2wd models. I have hauled over what is recommended with this truck but only after FULLY servicing it. After everything was done. It has plenty of power in the lower 3 gears to haul 900-1200lbs in the bed. It will squat some but with some care it can be worked. Its a very reliable truck as that's the number one thing I like about it. Its also easy and cheap to work on. Parts are easy to find and quick to change out.
Critical Review
I had this truck two years. Always started and ran, but what a piece of junk. It had some sort of electrical or computer problem. The doors would lock randomly, headlights quit working randomly, tachometer was erratic and incorrect. Four wheel drive would attempt to engage randomly even at high speeds. It started misfiring randomly different cylinders. I put a lot of time and money into it and never found a cause or cure. After having it in the ford dealer 6 times, a guy there told me to get rid of it. I grew up ford, but replaced it with a full size chevy. Couldn't be happier.

Fun to show off in exlent con
Not enough time to drive it
I am a 60 yr old male and it is my most favorite truck ever love the way it looks and handles when a friend needs to use a truck they always come to see if they can use Big ♥️ Red.
Runs & drives good. I'm 2nd owner. It don't smoke.
It is in good operation condition. Has new alternator , serpentine belt & idler pulley. The clutch has been replaced for the 5 speed manual transmission. Body is straight not bent up. Has new front end bushings & had a front end alignment.
Dependable, good on gas mileage,
No power steering, crowded for two
Never a problem with the truck! I have had to purchase a battery and just got a different set of tires put on. Other than the paint peeling on the hood and the driver's seat getting worn out somewhat. It's just been the absolute most dependable vehicle I have ever owned in my entire life!(close to 60 now-so been thru my fair share of autos)

Easy to repair, Cheap after market parts
Nothing
Bought it brand new in 1994 for $10,000. Now it's probably worth $1500. Lol. However, the main point is that it still runs great with no issues. It has 360,000 miles on it and do I have to say more about this truck... Still gets 25MPG.
fun to drive
belt and water pump squeal a little
i think the truck is a good young boy truck just to small for me
Cheap and easy to repair, good size, reliable.
Underpowered
My little B2300 is one of the most practical little work trucks you can get. I bought it from a Commercial truck repair shop where it had been used as a delivery vehicle. It was already well over 200,000 miles and had obviously been neglected, but with a little elbow grease and some skinned knuckles I was able to get the old girl running like new. My only complaint with the truck is the engine. That little 2.3L is fine for running around town but when it comes to climbing hills it feels pretty underpowered. You also definitely feel pretty sluggish when you're hauling anything around. I'd definitely recommend buying the 3.0L or 4.0L if you live in an area with hills or plan on hauling regularly.
Reliable, Great Value, Safe, Cheap Parts/Repairs
Unattractive, Gas Mileage
I bought this vehicle from a friend, which means I paid less than what it was worth. I paid 1200 for this vehicle over a year ago. Now, let me say, the body is damaged from previous wrecks, but that isn't the fault of anyone but the previous owner. It's had some issues in the beginning, due to poor previous maintenance. But let me say, I got a hold of this truck and started repairing things as I went along ( in the order of importance) and it hasn't given me any trouble. It uses a bit too much gas and oil, but for the price, it's quite a bargain. I commute to work. About 2 hours every day of drive time, and it's a real winner. It never dies! Even with small issues or what have you, it never gives me any problems. As someone who doesn't have a lot of extra cash, this is a great truck for me. If you don't maintenance, it will ride until the wheels fall off. If you DO maintenance and treat it right, I honestly believe it will never die. This truck is 21 years old, and it's twice as reliable as the vehicles of my peers that are much younger and more expensive. I think it's a great daily driver and worth every penny I've spent. It isn't a pretty truck, but it's definitely a good one. Great for a new driver or first time buyer, especially if you feel that learning to drive a manual is a valuable skill to have. Probably the easiest manual truck I've driven. This might also have to do with the size.
