Positive Review
We have owned this car since 2001 when it had 65000 miles on it. It was our number one car until 2007. Because of the reliability and comfort of this car, we purchased a 2007 Lexus ES350. Our 1999 Lexus has been an excellent number two car,and is still running like new.
Critical Review
There is a known issue (service bulletin) with the transmission and mine was replaced and then the issue reappeared on the replacement. It is a flare between 3&4th gears. It is the same tranny as on the 2007 Camry V6 and probably the same as on the 2007 Avalon. Some have been handled as buybacks over the last year. Mine is being bought back by Lexus and I'm getting a Prius.

Luxury interior, smooth ride, extremely reliable
Minor outdated styling choices
This is my second used Lexus ES300, the first being a 1996 model. The first ES I owned never gave me a single major mechanical issue along with regular maintenance after 3 years. Sold the 96 model for my current 00 model and I’ll never look back. It’s the perfect combination of luxurious build quality and engines so robust they last for 300k+ miles without breaking a sweat. The ES isn’t a sports sedan, but it offers about 210hp in the stock v6 engine along with 19 city / 26 hwy MPG. It’s just the kind of car that operates as intended every time you start the ignition. Cost of maintenance/repairs are relatively cheap and affordable if you simply give the car what it needs, which isn’t more than the basics like oil/filter changes. Having basic car knowledge goes a long way in maintaining my vehicle because it doesn’t take more than that with the simplicity of the design. Basically, if you take care of it, it will take care of you in ways that exceed the value you paid for it.The car is pretty much as old as me (22) and operates like it isn’t much older than 5. This is peak-level reliability and Japanese engineering!
Fast, fun, still feels modern, luxurious
Unreliable IF not maintained, non OEM shocks rough
I owned a 2000 Lexus ES300 from October 2016 until March 2019. The car was my grandparent's since new. For a first/second car it's a great value. The features for it being a 2000 had it still feeling luxurious 16 years after it was new. I live in MI, so the heated seats were awesome and it was a tank, even in the snow. The sound system is incredible and the thing is fast, even by today's standards. I truly felt classy while driving it, despite its age. I did have a couple issues with the car, though. The cup holders were tiny, and the frameless windows would freeze shut in the winter and water would fall in if you had them cracked open on rainy days. I picked the car up at 130,000 miles. My grandparents didn't do a great job maintaining it so I got the brunt of repair costs. My father and I replaced the brakes ourselves for $300, and the suspension (non-air) was shot after about 6 months of ownership. The first 6 months the car did have that floaty quality most people mention, but with how expensive OEM parts were I went with Monroe shocks. BAD decision. The car felt very firm after this and diminished the luxurious ride quality. If you need to replace the shocks, stick with OEM. I also had to replace all 6 ignition coils twice, which was frustrating but otherwise it was a smooth engine and pulled hard. If you find a well maintained example I'd jump on it. I wound up trading the car in for $400 at 167,000 miles. The transmission started shifting rough and at freeway speeds, would not shift from 3rd to 4th. It was too dangerous and I didn't feel like pumping more money into the car. I blame this problem on my grandparents not maintaining it well, and then 17 year old me hooning the car once I got it. If you find a babied model and continue babying it, it should be a great car. I do miss the car and wish I treated it more carefully.
Best V6 Lexus ever

These are the most reliable Lexus ever madev before all the unnecessary technology and vvti. Also this era is when they used best interior leathers and woodgrains. Also when they still had stainless steel exhaust manifolds and aluminum intake.
