The rugged and luxurious 2024 Land Rover Discovery is one of the best off-roaders in its class and offers the versatility of 3-row seating. Pricing starts at $61,375.
Almost every luxury brand has thrown its hat in the ring of midsize 3-row SUVs. One that stands out as a capable off-roader in this crowded segment is the Land Rover Discovery. This SUV is a modern interpretation of the rugged Discovery models of the past with a luxurious, high-tech interior with 3-row seating. It has the classic Land Rover character of combining on-road comfort with off-road capability with little compromise. Some of its more practical rivals are roomier, more affordable, or more fuel-efficient, but the Discovery has capability and character that’s hard to match.
The Discovery competes with midsize luxury SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Lexus GX.
The Land Rover Discovery gets a simplified trim lineup for 2024. The old “R-Dynamic” trims are replaced with a “Dynamic SE” trim available with either engine. New standard features include LED headlights with signature DRL lights, automatic high beams, a heated steering wheel, and 18-way power-operated and heated front seats.
The Dynamic SE models have a new 21-inch wheel design, and the Metropolitan Edition now comes standard with the Full Extended Leather Upgrade and a solar attenuating windshield. Instead of a litany of standalone options, the Discovery now bundles more optional features in option packages.
The 2024 Land Rover Discovery has a starting sticker price of $61,375, with the range-topping Discovery Metropolitan Edition kicking off at $80,775. But Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Pricing currently suggests paying $4,446 to $4,960 less than MSRP, depending on trim and equipment. These prices are updated weekly.

Before buying a Discovery, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should really pay. Land Rover Discovery resale value is about average for the segment.
The Land Rover Discovery is powered by a 296-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. It has more than enough power for confident city and highway driving; its performance is about average for a base engine in this class.
The more popular engine option is a 355-horsepower turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. Like the base engine, it has an 8-speed transmission and AWD. This adds some extra excitement to the drive and is a better fit if you’ll regularly have a full load of passengers or cargo. This is the engine we recommend if it fits your budget.
The Land Rover Discovery excels at on-road comfort for such a good off-roader. This is partially thanks to standard adaptive air suspension, making it glide over imperfections in the road. It can raise and lower the ride height of the Discovery for better aerodynamics on the highway and more ground clearance off-road.
As you might expect from the brand’s reputation, the Land Rover Discovery is a stellar off-roader. This SUV is even more capable when equipped with the Advanced Off Road Capability package, which adds a more advanced Terrain Response system, a 2-speed transfer case, and All Terrain Progress Control, which is like off-road cruise control.
We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of midsize luxury SUVs, including this Land Rover Discovery.
The Land Rover Discovery gets a combined fuel economy rating of 21 mpg with the base 4-cylinder engine. The more popular and powerful 6-cylinder is actually more efficient; it gets 22 mpg. Premium fuel is recommended for both engines. These fuel economy ratings are slightly below average for this class. More Discovery fuel economy information is available on the EPA’s website.
The interior of the Land Rover Discovery has a premium design that gives it unquestionable luxury SUV credentials but has a tasteful simplicity that hints at its rugged capabilities. We’re impressed with the high-quality materials, and the tech features like the Pivi Pro infotainment system are user-friendly.
There’s plenty of passenger space in the first two rows, but the standard third row of seats is pretty cramped. It’s hard to climb back there, and you only get 33.5 inches of legroom. That’s actually about average for a midsize 3-row luxury SUV, but still only suitable for kids.
There’s only 9.1 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third row of seats. However, folding down the third row yields a generous 45 cubic-foot cargo hold, and the maximum cargo space goes up to 74.3 cubic feet with all rear seats folded down.
The Land Rover Discovery does an excellent job of looking upscale with a hint of an off-road attitude. The Metropolitan Edition is the top trim for 2024 and has a unique, extra-premium look with distinct 22-inch wheels, black brake calipers, a bright Atlas grille, and more.
AWD with Terrain Response
Every Land Rover Discovery comes standard with a rugged all-wheel-drive system and Terrain Response with off-road drive modes. Its impressive off-road capabilities are one of its biggest strengths.
Pivi Pro infotainment system
This standard infotainment system has a beautiful 11.4-inch screen and many features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, navigation, SiriusXM, and a Meridian premium audio system.
ClearSight Ground View
This innovative off-road tech feature allows you to effectively see through the hood for a clear view of the terrain around you and even under you.
All Terrain Progress Control
This is essentially low-speed cruise control for off-roading. It maintains a consistent speed over any terrain.
Adaptive Dynamics
This available feature improves the comfort of this luxury SUV by monitoring the Discovery’s movements and the road conditions to adapt to the driver’s needs.
Posh Metropolitan trim
The Metropolitan Edition is the peak of luxury in the Discovery lineup. On top of its stylish appearance package, it comes standard with the turbo 6-cylinder engine, Windsor leather seats, heated and cooled second-row seats, a head-up display, and more.
The Land Rover Discovery has two engine options. The base engine is an adequate 296-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder unit; the more popular choice is a 355-horsepower turbo 6-cylinder. The 6-cylinder is the obvious choice if you can afford it since it’s more powerful and even slightly more efficient than the base engine.
Every Discovery has an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive regardless of engine.
The Land Rover Discovery is backed by a 4-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. This coverage is typical for a European luxury vehicle.
The Discovery has many standard safety tech features like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and more.
The 2024 Land Rover Discovery is in the middle 26-75% for Cost to Own among all Luxury Mid-size SUV/Crossovers.
