The 2023 Land Rover Discovery is an SUV that blends a supremely luxurious interior with rugged off-road capabilities in a way that few rivals can imitate. It has a few drawbacks, like a cramped third row of seats and unimpressive fuel economy. Still, aside from those flaws, the Discovery is a well-rounded luxury SUV with a premium interior, advanced tech features, and two satisfying engine options.
If you’re looking for a midsize luxury SUV that you can actually take off-road, the Discovery has few direct rivals. A couple of options include the Lexus GX and the more luxurious trims of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. If off-road prowess isn’t a big priority for you, then you might get more value out of one of the Discovery’s less rugged and more affordable competitors like the Acura MDX or Lexus RX.
If you’ve always wanted a Land Rover and you need a practical midsize 3-row SUV, then the Land Rover Discovery could be right for you.
2023 Land Rover Discovery pricing starts at $41,574 for the Discovery P300 S Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $58,075 when new. The range-topping 2023 Discovery P360 Metropolitan Edition (2023.5) Sport Utility 4D starts at $57,224 today, originally priced from $79,275.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. For such a good off-roader, the Land Rover Discovery excels at on-road comfort. This is thanks to a well-tuned chassis with standard adaptive air suspension, which soaks up road imperfections and keeps body roll manageable. It can raise and lower the ride height of the Discovery for better aerodynamics on the street and more ground clearance off-road.
There are two engines available under the hood, and we like both of them. The base 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder delivers almost 300 horsepower, more than enough for confident city and highway driving. If your budget allows it, we recommend the available turbocharged mild-hybrid inline-6, which is more powerful and has the same combined fuel economy rating as the 4-cylinder. Speaking of fuel economy, the efficiency of the Discovery is just okay compared to class rivals.
As you might expect from the brand’s reputation, the Land Rover Discovery is a stellar off-roader. All-wheel drive and hill-descent control come standard on every model. This SUV is even more capable when equipped with the Advanced Off Road Capability package, which adds a more advanced Terrain Response system, a 2-speed transfer case, and All Terrain Progress Control, which is like off-road cruise control.
The interior of the Land Rover Discovery has a premium design that gives it unquestionable luxury SUV credentials but has a tasteful simplicity that hints at its rugged capabilities. This interior boasts high-quality materials, and the tech features like the Pivi Pro infotainment system are user-friendly.
There’s plenty of passenger space in the first two rows, but the standard third row of seats is pretty cramped. It’s okay for kids on short trips, but taller adults will find accommodations tight. The cargo area is a little small when all three rows of seats are in place but pretty big when the third row is folded down.
This generation of the Land Rover Discovery isn’t as boxy as its predecessors. It does an excellent job looking upscale with a hint of an off-road attitude. This SUV looks as at-home on the trails as it does in a country club parking lot. The Metropolitan Edition is the top trim for 2023 and has a unique, extra premium look with distinct 22-inch wheels, black brake calipers, a bright Atlas grille, and more.
The Land Rover Discovery is on the smaller side of midsize 3-row luxury SUVs, but it’s a little bigger than the Lexus GX.
ADVANCED OFF ROAD CAPABILITY PACKAGE
This package is a must for off-road enthusiasts. It adds Terrain Response 2 with more off-road drive modes, a 2-speed transfer case, All Terrain Progress Control, and Configurable Terrain Response.
METROPOLITAN EDITION
This new special edition of the Discovery adds luxurious features and a unique aesthetic inside and out.
The list of standard features in the Land Rover Discovery is impressive, which is good since it has a relatively high starting price. Standard equipment in the base trim includes all-wheel drive, electronic air suspension, Terrain Response drive modes, all-terrain tires, LED headlights and taillights, a power tailgate, 20-inch wheels, 3-row seating with seating for up to seven, 3-zone automatic climate control, DuoLeather seats, heated front seats, wireless charging, and a universal garage door opener.
The standard infotainment system in the Discovery is the Pivi Pro system with an 11.4-inch screen loaded with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Meridian audio system, a 3D surround camera, and SiriusXM.
Standard safety tech features in the Discovery include adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic monitor, clear exit monitor, blind-spot assist, and traffic sign monitoring.
The standard P300 powertrain is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Upgrading to the R Dynamic S trim of the Discovery adds many additional features and introduces the 6-cylinder P360 powertrain as an option. The R-Dynamic appearance package gives this Land Rover a sporty look with black exterior trim, a unique lower rear bumper, and special wheels. Interior upgrades of the R Dynamic S trim include 2-tone seats, aluminum interior trim, and a black headliner.
The R Dynamic HSE trim is like a more luxurious version of the R Dynamic S model, and it comes standard with the 6-cylinder engine. Upgrades include premium LED headlights, automatic high beams, 22-inch wheels, 20-way adjustable front seats with heating and cooling and memory for the driver’s seat, heated second-row seats, Windsor leather upholstery, Premium Cabin Lighting, 15-speaker Meridian audio, and an Interactive Driver Display.
At the top end, the new Metropolitan Edition is the most luxurious variant of the Discovery. Naturally, the 6-cylinder engine is standard, plus it comes standard with a unique appearance package, a hands-free power liftgate, heated and cooled second-row seats, heated third-row seats, titanium mesh interior trim, a heated steering wheel, a cooler compartment in the front center console, 4-zone automatic climate control, and a head-up display.
A couple of option packages available for the Discovery include a Cold Climate Pack with a heated steering wheel and heated windshield. There’s also a Hot Climate Pack with 4-zone climate control, cabin air purification, and a cooler in the front center console.
A Towing Package and an Advanced Off-Road Capability Package are only available for the 6-cylinder models, but they contain features that you can add individually to the 4-cylinder models. The Towing Pack adds a tow hitch receiver, Advanced Tow Assist, Terrain Response 2 with more off-road drive modes, and All Terrain Progress Control. The Advanced Off-Road Capability Package adds Terrain Response 2 and All Terrain Progress Control, plus Configurable Terrain Response.
There are many individual options available for the Discovery. If you’d like to have one or two features on the upper trims on a lower trim, you can configure your Discovery to be just right for your tastes and your budget. There are also tons of options for wheel designs, paint colors, and interior trims.
There are two engines available for the Land Rover Discovery. The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that delivers satisfying performance. It’s upgradable to a more potent 3.0-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid inline-6. These two engines have the same combined estimated fuel economy rating, according to the EPA. We like the performance of both of these engines, but they’re a bit inefficient compared to most rivals.
Every Land Rover Discovery uses an 8-speed automatic transmission and has all-wheel drive.
