Positive Review

"Bought it new in 2000; 15 years later...."

Bought it new in 2000; 15 years later it is still going strong! It really is the best 4 x 4 by far. It's true, and perhaps I have been fortunate, but I have taken relatively good care of my Disco and it has never let me down. I do not baby it and it has been kept outside (not garaged) for the past 10 years of its life. Still, it is the strongest and most reliable vehicle I have ever had, and it is the only vehicle I will drive in in severe weather and snow. My friends bought a 2002 Disco, but they had many electrical problems with it (but, keep in mind, that my friend's husband thought he was clever enough to try to modify things himself and the poor car was never the same). I have had plenty of routine/expected maintenance work done to it over the years - and, yes, that can add up - but it is certainly not as much as buying a newer vehicle and maintaining it. The most expnsive service was recently when I had the valve seals redone. The worst thing about the car is that (now that it has been left outside for so long in the rainy Pacific Northwest), it leaks a bit after sitting (not when driving). That will be a $400 fix, but it will be worth it. Another annoying thing is that the new dreaded uber-owner of Land Rover, Tata (India), is no longer manufacturing some of the parts. So, for me to get a new sunroof motor, it's time to shop Ebay or junk yards (that is until some wonderful after-market company picks up on this fantastic opportunity). I can't imagine ever willingly parting with my Disco. It goes when and where it needs to and has been borh a source of many wonderful back- and off-road adventures as well as being a life saver in severe storms. During a very severe winter storm, my Disco was the one and only vehicle that could make it up a steep snow and ice covered road over fallen tree limbs, in and out of a neighborhood. Other neighbor's vehicles could not - a Suburban, Toyota Tacoma, Jeep, BMW X5. If you buy a Disco like mine, take good care of the basics, and get out there and use that thing the way it was meant to be used - go explore, see our beautiful and, and make memories that last a lifetime.

Critical Review

"Junk, Junk and more Junk"

Folks, these older Discos are for off roaders who put serious $$$ into these trucks to draw out their real qualities. The truth is that these trucks are some of the least reliable vehicles made by any car maker in the last 20 years. Discos suffer from 3 significant issues . Poor quality cylinder castings, poor quality radiators and steel frames that aren't galvanized and I could add another but I will give the pass to the Lucas system. If you want to buy a used one MAKE SURE the following has been done . Head Job , including welding of the cylinder pit holes or make sure sleeves were installed (especially 2001+ as these were out of tolerance when shipped out of the factory, Research British Leyland-Buick 215 castings ), new radiator (1994-2002) and some type of rust proofing on the frame. If this was done too late , you bought a lemon ready to drop at any moment and it wont pass a state inspection. These trucks are junk for luxury cruising but , with all the repairs done above , very good off-road trucks. Truth is I've owned them previously and am buying another 2000 soon for a sand / beach vehicle but only with all of the repairs done above. With none of the repairs documented , don't pay more than $1500.

Love it, Hate it, Will never get rid of it!!

2000 D2. 1st off I ABSOLUTELY love my D2!! 216,000 miles on it and still going strong. However, it’s a 25 year old vehicle and it requires CONSTANT preventive maintenance. If you are not someone who checks fluids & has some mechanical knowledge this is not a vehicle for you to own. Things will break, you will need to tinker on it constantly. I like to work on my D2 so no problem for me. If you have to pay a garage to do the work you will go broke. So basically if you want one for its looks….don’t buy one. If you want one for it’s on & off road abilities and have a desire to maintain and OLD vehicle…….this is ABSOLUTELY the BEST vehicle to own. It’s a head turner and for me a reliable daily driver.

Greatest SUV ever!
Pros

No other car like it

Cons

Must be a mechanic to own or willing to become one

The Land Rover Discovery 2 is more of a hobby than a a reliable mode of transportation. Great car for the mechanically inclined. So much fun to drive. I've had 4 of them. And I never foresee myself without at least one.

A lot of SUV for not a lot of money
Pros

Comfortable , great classic styling , good value

Cons

nothing that will stop me from owning a Disco 2

I am a car nut and the owner of two Disco 2's and some classic BMW's . I believe the Disco 2 is a truck / car that is not always give the credit it deserves. Yes there has been problems with the V8 engines but being the owner of TD5 models can confirm that it is reliable and a pleasure to own if properly maintained ( as al cars irrespective of make should be ) In 2022 these cars are now old and this should be kept in mind when buying . Look out for the best example you can find and then do a bumper to bumper inspection , replace what needs to be refreshed and you will have a great off roader .. better than many new models on the market today . If you do your own maintenance as I do , these cars are easy to work on , parts are reasonable prices and easily available. My first Disco 2 , 2004 model I bought in 2006 , still have it and last year bought another auto 2002 .

Owned it for 20 years
Pros

Comfort and style

Cons

Not as polished as the newer rovers

I have owned my 1999 Land Rover Discovery Series II for over 20 years. It has been a family car, the teenage car and now this last year a project car. It is a great car. Amazing in the snow, so comfortable, the ride is great.

Best SUV to go anywhere!
Pros

Unique, comfortable, spacious, will go anywhere!

Cons

Bad mpg, expensive repair costs

Quiet and comfortable ride. Spacious with luggage room. Many storage compartments. Unique looks and definitely British styling. It's not built for speed but it keeps up and will go anywhere snow, mud, sand and water. Comfortable tank. Big engine bay. Better have a job if you want a land rover. Not economical as per mpg. Repairs can be very expensive but if you properly maintain and quickly address issues than you won't be in the shop much. Definitely try to learn and fix things yourself. If you want a truck you may as well get an SUV. You need to pull a boat? May as well get an SUV. You like the gun range than get an SUV. You like road trips than get an SUV. You have some money? Than you buy a Land Rover.

Love hate relationship.
Pros

It's a Landy.

Cons

It's a Landy.

Bottom line it is still one of the coolest looking cars out there. There should only be two types of Disco owners. One that does all the work himself or someone who can afford to pay for the work. Anyone in between should look for a different vehicle. With that being said, I love it. Turned me into a mechanic. Lol

very good transportation
Pros

drives great and would be perfect for outdoors

Cons

needs some paint and some interior work else good

Il need more of a family car and this one is not it. I'm starting to look for something alittle more family oriented. We are not quite the outdoors people or at least the 4-wheeling type and we got our use from the vehicle and someone who fits the Landrover attitude would be more suitable.
