  • Reshuffled options in simplified option packages

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler is a modern SUV that hasn’t forgotten its roots. You can still expect the incredible off-road capability that its “Trail Rated” badges promise while getting an SUV that’s comfortable enough for the daily commute.

With standard 4-wheel drive on every trim, the Jeep Wrangler is ready for just about anything nature throws at it, whether it’s traversing a snowy road or climbing a mountain. It can also offer a level of luxury that might surprise you in the upper trims.

Engine options include a standard Pentastar V6, a turbocharged inline-4 with an eTorque mild-hybrid system, and an efficient EcoDiesel V6. It’s one of the few SUVs that is still available with a manual transmission.

Driving the Jeep Wrangler

When driven off the beaten path, there aren’t a lot of surprises with the 2020 Jeep Wrangler, and that’s a good thing. What would be a challenge for most SUVs like rocks, muddy fields, and even rushing water is easy for the Wrangler to conquer.

You don’t need to upgrade to one of the more expensive trims for the Wrangler to be an excellent off-roader, but it does make this SUV more adventurous. The rugged Rubicon model adds more undercarriage protection, beefier all-terrain tires, the Rock-Trac 4×4 system, an Off-Road+ mode, and much more.

As for on-road driving manners, the Jeep Wrangler is more civilized than ever. Compared to previous generations, the ride is more comfortable, and the interior is more modern. We also like the range of engines from the sturdy standard V6 to the turbocharged inline-4 to the torquey and efficient EcoDiesel V6.

Further evidence that the Wrangler hasn’t lost any of its character is that it’s still ready for open-air fun. You can take off the top and the doors and fold down the windshield if you want that wind in your hair experience that few other SUVs can offer.

Interior Comfort

The inside of the Jeep Wrangler has gotten nicer, but it still has a distinct charm. The two different body styles of the Wrangler provide two different interiors. The 2-door model has two seats in the back, and the 4-door Unlimited models have a more spacious rear bench seat with three seats, plus a lot more cargo space.

The interior design is simple and somewhat minimalist. The base trim is pretty spartan, but as you work your way up the model range, the Wrangler can get pretty nice with modern features like heated seats, navigation, and a leather-wrapped dash.

Exterior Styling

The Jeep Wrangler is identifiable from a mile away. It still has its distinct shape and face with its round headlights and 7-slot grille. It’s a bit bigger than its predecessors, but the 2-door model is still decidedly compact. We love that Jeep mainstays like removable doors, a folding windshield, and soft- or hardtop roof options are still there.

The doors are easier for one person to remove and replace than you might expect. You have a choice of an easy-to-fold soft-top or two different hardtops — one with a power-retractable cover and another with two removable panels.

Favorite Features

3 AVAILABLE ENGINES
The base V6 is a trusty engine that’s well-suited for on-road driving and off-road adventuring. The turbocharged 4-cylinder yields better fuel economy and more torque than the base V6. The EcoDiesel V6 gives you a ton of torque while being the most efficient engine available in the Wrangler.

MODERN INTERIOR
This is the first generation of the Wrangler that feels like a modern SUV on the inside. The front seats are comfortable, while the back of the Wrangler Unlimited is plenty roomy. Don’t worry; if you still want a rubber floor, you can hose down, that’s still available.

Standard Features

The base Jeep Wrangler Sport has a standard gas-powered V6 linked to a 6-speed manual transmission and the Command-Trac 4×4 system. This is an old-school Jeep that does not include power windows, air conditioning, nor a modern infotainment system as standard equipment. If you’re a Jeep purist, this is probably a good thing, but if you’re looking for a more modern SUV, you’ll probably want to skip the base trim. The base Unlimited Sport model is similarly appointed, but with a 4-door body and more interior space.

Factory Options

The Wrangler lineup has plenty of variety with different engines, transmissions, and trim levels available. You can get an automatic transmission with the base V6 engine or upgrade to a turbocharged inline-4 or the EcoDiesel V6. However, the diesel is only available in Unlimited models.

The mid-range Sport S trim adds some basic creature comforts absent from the Sport trim like power windows, keyless entry, and air conditioning. The Unlimited-only Sahara trim makes the rugged Wrangler a bit more premium with a 7-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone automatic climate control, and more options like leather seats and navigation become available. Finally, the Rubicon models are for the serious off-road nut with beefier all-terrain tires, the Rock-Trac 4×4 system with a 2-speed transfer case, Off-Road+ mode, and more.

Engine & Transmission

There are three engines available under the hood of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler, and 4-wheel drive is standard on every model. The base engine is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 making 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, and an 8-speed automatic is optional.

There’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine available, which only comes with an automatic transmission. It makes 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque while burning less gas than the base V6.

The base V6 and turbo-4 are both available with an eTorque mild-hybrid system that replaces the traditional alternator with an electric motor/generator. eTorque can provide extra torque in low-speed acceleration while saving a little fuel.

Finally, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 is available in Unlimited models. This diesel makes 260 hp and a whopping 442 lb-ft of torque, which can really come in handy in off-road adventures. This is also the most efficient engine available in the Wrangler.

2020 Jeep Wrangler Safety

2020 Jeep Wrangler Safety Technology

Rearview camera

A backup camera is handy both on-road and off. It has the obvious benefit of seeing what’s behind you in the driveway, but it’s also useful for seeing any obstacles behind you during an off-road adventure.

Jeep Advanced Safety Group

The safety tech suite is available as an option on every Wrangler except the Sport trim. It includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and adaptive cruise control.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic detection

These options are pretty self-explanatory. They’re part of the Jeep Active Safety Group, and they help you be more aware of your surroundings.

Hill Descent Control

Every 2020 Jeep Wrangler with an automatic transmission comes standard with Hill Descent Control. It helps you maintain your speed while descending on an incline to avoid any unwanted extra momentum going downhill.
