The “WK2” platform of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is getting toward the end of its life cycle in the 2020 model year, but it is still a compelling midsize 2-row SUV that can appease a wide range of SUV shoppers. As you may have guessed, it has an edge over most of its competitors in off-road capability when equipped with one of its multiple available 4-wheel-drive systems.
The Grand Cherokee is good at much more than off-roading. If it’s on-road performance you crave in the form of a practical SUV, then you’ll find a lot to love in this Jeep. There are three different V8 engines available under the hood and two distinct high-performance trims; the SRT and the insane 707-horsepower Trackhawk.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s calling card has always been blending on-road comfort with off-road capability, and that’s no different for the 2020 model. This SUV has excellent road manners both around town and on the highway. If you only drive the Grand Cherokee on pavement, it might surprise you what it can do when the pavement ends.
The Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II (adds a 2-speed transfer case), and Quadra-Drive II (adds an electronic limited-slip rear differential) 4-wheel-drive systems all turn the Grand Cherokee into a more capable off-roader than almost all of its direct competitors. Meanwhile, the available Quadra-Lift air suspension system can turn up the ground clearance as high as 10.8 inches and provides a smooth ride on the street.
On-road performance depends on which of the four engines you choose. Most Grand Cherokees are equipped with a Pentastar V6, which delivers a satisfying blend of performance and efficiency. Upgrading to the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 gives this SUV some extra muscle and can tow up to 7,200 lbs. To really turn up the heat, the 392 Hemi V8 in the SRT model pumps out 475 horsepower, and the bonkers Trackhawk with a supercharged V8 sourced from the Dodge Hellcat muscle cars produces 707 horsepower.
When you think of the base trim of a Jeep, you probably think of a bare-bones SUV. This is not the case with the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The base Laredo model is a nice SUV with a comfortable interior and modern tech. Move up the model range, and you’ll find premium features like Laguna leather seats, a panoramic roof, advanced safety tech, and more.
The Grand Cherokee can only be had with two rows of seats. It’s comfortable for the front-seat occupants, and the cargo hold is pretty spacious, but the back seats aren’t as roomy as you’d think for an SUV this size.
The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee has an aesthetic that is in line with its character. It looks rugged yet classy with a distinct Jeep look. It’s boxier than most rivals, and the ground clearance is generous, but not extreme.
The look of the Grand Cherokee can change quite a bit depending on which trim you choose. For example, the Trailhawk has an off-roady look with red tow hooks and a matte black hood stripe, the premium Overland and Summit models use more chrome, and the high-performance SRT and Trackhawk trims have a lower stance and more aggressive front end.
PERFORMANCE MODELS
With the off-road-ready Trailhawk, high-performance SRT, and mind-blowing Trackhawk in its ranks, the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a versatile model range for a wide variety of drivers.
QUADRA-LIFT AIR SUSPENSION
Quadra-Lift is one of the many things that set the Grand Cherokee apart from the competition. It can lower itself for easier access or raise itself for greater ground clearance, which translates to more possibilities off-road.
There are many trims and tons of options for the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but the base Laredo trim is fairly well appointed. Standard features include a Pentastar V6 engine, dual-zone climate control, a 7-inch Uconnect infotainment system, and some safety tech like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a backup camera with rear parking sensors.
Whether you’re looking for better off-road chops, stronger on-road performance, or just a nicer SUV, you’ll find it in the model range of the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. There are three V8 engines and three 4-wheel-drive systems available, giving the Grand Cherokee plenty of mechanical variety. As for tech features, you can get a bigger 8.4-inch touchscreen with more features like navigation. There are also multiple safety tech packages available that add automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, parallel park assist, and more.
The vast majority of 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee models are equipped with either the base 3.6-liter V6 or the available 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The V6 is the most affordable and efficient option, and it provides enough grunt for the needs of most drivers. However, the most affordable V8 option adds some extra muscle and more towing capacity.
The SRT model employs a 6.4-liter V8 making 475 horsepower, and the Trackhawk borrows a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 from the Dodge Charger and Challenger Hellcat to make 707 horsepower.
V6-equipped Grand Cherokee models are available with rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive, while all V8 models have 4WD. Every Grand Cherokee sends power to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.
