"First Domestic Car in 25 Years....so far so good"

I bought a 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited after doing exhaustive comparisons with both domestic and imports. I have been a Japanese and German car owner for a couple of decades and never thought I would go back to a domestic. I do a lot of business travel and have driven a lot of SUVs. I was not even going to consider the Jeep until I rented one and drove it for a couple of weeks. After that I always looked for one on the National Car lot. When I went to buy, I just could not find a better value for what was offered. I sold a 12 year old Acura MDX (a great SUV) and replaced it with the Jeep. So far, the Jeep has been great. V6 power is adequate, but not exceptional, interior is super, exterior is stylish. My only issues are: 1) a buzz in the dash when driving at low revs in lower gears, the finicky electronic shifter, that I can never seem to work correctly, lots of panels, and nooks and crannies in the exterior that I continue to get road salt and sand out of when I wash it even into July, a bit high to step into, no dealer loaners when it is serviced (I keep forgetting this is not an Audi). It has been great in the snow and on the highway. So far (admittedly I have low miles on it) it has been a great vehicle and ran me over $10K less than buying another Acura MDX. In fact, this Grand Cherokee cost me exactly what my 2002 MDX cost me way back then. Better SUV with many more features over 10 years later for the same price....I will take it. I will check back in 10K miles or so.

Critical Review

"Buyer Beware"

just received the sixth recall for this vehicle. Have owned it for one year. It is currently at the dealer for the second time due to transmission problems. Also, they are replacing the radiator because it developed a leak. I really love the appearance of this vehicle and the comfort. But I am beginning to think that i have a lemon on my hands. Perspective buyer need to research the problems associated with this vehicle before you purchase.

Beautiful Automobile

This is an amazing vehicle. The water pump, two headlamp bulbs and a new set of wipers were all that was ever required for repair over the course of 91K miles. I'm on my third set of tires. The original Factory Goodyear took me to 45K miles. The next set of Goodyear were noisy and replaced with Michelin at about 75K. Oil changed at 5K intervals. Burns no oil. Brakes were done at 90K but mechanic said they had another 10-15K left. No rattles. All electronics in great shape. No rust. No dings. Great highway or around town driver. The sheet metal is robust enough to avoid door dings. (compared to our Mustang which dents by falling acorns). We've had several jeep wranglers and there's no comparison to quality. Wranglers, in our experience (three of them), always needed warrantee work. The V6 has been a great engine. Hope they are building the new Grand Cherokee's as well as this 2018.

2018 SRT - Awesome but beware
Pros

Looks, performance, functionality

Cons

Regular maintenance costs, reliability

I love this vehicle, it looks awesome and I get compliments on it all the time from other drivers on the road, and it MOVES! I want to run it into the ground because I like it so much BUT I'm starting to look at other options because of the following: -Brakes are incredibly expensive to maintain. If you go with the Brembo's that it comes with, you're looking at about $3500-$4000 to replace just the front brakes and rotors, and you'll have to do that roughly every 20k miles, which is just over a year for most average drivers. I found an after-market option that still have slotted rotors (for heat dissipation) and a lower quality Brembo pad that doesn't have quite as much bite to it BUT they last like 3 times longer...this setup cost me about $1500-2000 but it lease it lasts for 40-50k miles. -Tires are the same, you have very few options beyond the Pirelli's run flats that come on it if you want to stay with a runflat option. Last time I did that was around $2k. I went away from the runflats (my vehicle actually has a spare so I don't see the point) and I was able to get more mileage out of them for about $500 less -SRT's are prone to get stolen, especially in bigger cities. The key fob is easier to hack than most other cars so people can get within a certain distance of your car and then come by and swipe it while it's sitting in the parking lot without even having to break in. I had a friend who had his get stolen in Dallas, cops told him it happens a lot and it was already chopped up and sold for parts by the time they could do anything. I bought a carbon fiber case for the key fob that blocks the RFID code so people can't hack into it, but then it also takes away the keyless entry option unless you take the fob out of the case every time you walk up to your car. It's better than getting it stolen but incredibly annoying. Since I've had this vehicle, beyond general maintenance I've had to: -replace the carbon fiber trim on the passenger side - common problem after research - $400 @ 30k miles -Replace the entire digital control unit (the screen on the dash that controls everything) - luckily this was covered by an extended warranty that I bought so it didn't cost me anything but still felt unnecessary. That happened around 50k miles -Replace one of the front headlights - $800 @ 80k miles - this is not something you can do yourself, jeep intentionally made them extremely hard to get to so you have to take off the front bumper among other things, labor costs were the biggest part of this due to the time, the actual headlight was like $30. -Replace the water pump (started leaking coolant, got engine overheating warning) - $900 @ 100k miles. -Replace the transfer case - current issue, unknown but estimates are between $5k-$7.5k. The 3 stars I gave this rating were solely based on looks and performance (when it's working), the reliability has obviously been an issue and is why I'm exploring options for something else even though I will be sad to get rid of it.

2016-2018 Jeep grand Jerokee.
Cons

Engine will cost you $$ to repair

If you own a 2016-2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee get rid of it before you lose the total value. My JGC has 80k miles and the engine block cracked. Quoted 10k to repair. Plus 5 plus month wait for parts and no guarantee it will be 5 months. Now good for only parts. Service person told me the engine has had many problems. You will be wasting your money to repair the engine problems. Jeep dealership near me only sells new Jeep and does not sell used ones.

I love it but it doesn't love me back

I am a long time Jeep Grand Cherokee driver. I had a 1996 Grand Cherokee I would still own today if I hadn't been in an accident. It had 145,000 miles when it was totaled. My 2000 Grand Cherokee drove to 168,000 when the differential died and I couldn't go into 4 wheel drive but never got stranded. I had a 2009 GC Overland V8 and the front and back differentials broke at 98,000 miles with no more warranty, I dumped it. I got the 2015 Grand Cherokee limited 2.5 years ago. I love it. It does not love me. It does not go off road. It is a pampered kid mover. I have had the following repairs in 2.5 years: thermostat, hood cowl broke, left side rockers, cams, and lifters, oil coolant housing seals, drive shaft separated, turn signal broke, and now I have a broken transfer case at just over 100,000 miles. So, yeah. Warranty is covering all this but I am out my Jeep for weeks at a time waiting for repairs. Rentals are really expensive. I do not drive fast. I do not abuse the vehicle, it gets regular oil changes and servicing. It either hates me or it hates life.
