Positive Review
I have had my Jeep Grand Cherokee since new, and it is a great vehicle. Anyone who knows cars will tell you this 4.0L engine is "bullet-proof" and will run forever. I have had no major issues with it, just a few minor repairs and maintenance in the last 13 years!
Critical Review
*Disclaimer: I am adamant about oil changes and routine maintenance on any and all vehicles I own. The story: After a very unfortunate experience with the motor(s) in my wife's 1997 Honda Passport (re-badged Isuzu Rodeo), we researched the heck out of SUVs and what would be hopefully be our last one for quite a while. From our research, we decided on Jeep Grand Cherokee with the supposedly "bullet-proof" inline 6. We were so happy to finally have a car that would hopefully last a while. We had been through enough "engine swaps" with the Passport (four to be exact), and we were financially broke and spiritually broken. Everything went great for about 4 years or so. When the engine reached about 120K miles, it started going through oil and coolant like mad. Long story short, the now-famous "cracked head" scenario which has grown famous with these engines. So much for bullet-proof. :P So, what did we do? We swapped out the engine for a used one that had about 30k less miles on it because the bill for fixing the old engine was going to be about the same. Fine. Maybe we just got a lemon. Fast forward to last week. The odometer reads 193k miles (engine actually has about 160k miles). Threw a freakin' rod last week on my way home from work. Supposedly these in-line 6's were great engines. Not so much I'm finding out. Supposedly, the geniuses at Jeep/Chrysler/Whatever decided to "improve" the in-line 6 back in 1999. Terrible idea. I guess the "If it ain't broke..." theory doesn't apply in car manufacturing. So what am I driving back and forth to work now? My mom's Jeep Grand Cherokee of course. This one is a 1995, with the V8, with 230k miles on it. The thing won't die. Original engine. I can't catch a break with cars, and I'll never buy another Jeep product again.

I bought my 1999 Jeep about 10t years ago and it is at 201120 miles and still running like a champ. I have only replaced the radiator, and just last year my ac went out. No other repairs have ever been needed and the engine still has great power no hesitation at start up. Has been a very reliable car. And I’m still driving it around. Running very smooth.

Mine needs a new radiator and hoses, power steering pump, power steering gearbox, had to fix gas leak on fuel filter, needed brake calipers all the way around, new ac compressor and put drilled and slotted rotors on front. Also had leaking front differential, fixed with repair sleeve and back differential sounded like it was going to explode. Changed the fluid and put Valvoline limited slip fluid in there and noise cleared up in a few weeks, I was amazed. Also had broken heater blend door but cheated and put dual door control so drivers side controls temp. I would not trade this for a brand new Jeep, I love it. Put in one of those gizmos to make it accelerate as soon as you punch it, feels like a lot more than 265hp and of course it's black, Has am/fm cd, cassette and 10 CD player in the back. I love my Jeep! Greg K

These jeeps are the best card made from 1999 to 2003 these in line 6 are amazing with strong transmission it will take you anywhere you need to go. Keep them out of the rust belt though rust will ruin these things quickly
engine seems to- be in good shape and runs good.
Front seats needs some repair as they are in need of building up with new padding. Headliner is starting to show some wear around the rear view mirrow.
Wouldn’t be afraid to take it forward in anywhere
