Electric Variation Available

Updated January 30, 2025
The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain to an excellent midsize SUV that blends on-road comfort with off-road capability. Pricing starts at $62,285.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is America’s second-best-selling plug-in hybrid, right behind the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. If it’s in your budget, the 4xe variant has a lot of appeal compared to a similarly equipped non-hybrid Grand Cherokee. The plug-in hybrid powertrain combines impressive performance with the ability to travel up to 25 miles on electricity alone. It also has smooth, quiet power delivery and improved off-road capabilities, especially with the 4xe-exclusive Trailhawk trim.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe competes with PHEV versions of mainstream SUVs like the Mazda CX-90 and Kia Sorento, but it’s also competitive with luxury SUVs like the plug-in variants of the Lincoln Aviator, Lexus RX, and Volvo XC90.
The non-hybrid, 2-row Grand Cherokee and the 3-row Grand Cherokee L are reviewed separately.
The Trailhawk model gets a new set of black 18-inch wheels for 2024. That’s about it for changes.
The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has a starting sticker price of $62,285, with the range-topping Grand Cherokee 4xe Summit Reserve kicking off at $80,945. But Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Pricing currently suggests paying $3,756 to $5,780 less than MSRP, depending on trim and equipment. These prices are updated weekly.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe features a 375-horsepower hybrid powertrain matching a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels.
We were impressed with the quick acceleration from a standstill thanks to the instant torque delivery from the electric motors. In hybrid mode, the electric motors play nicely with the turbocharged gas engine. In our testing, we usually didn’t notice when it switched between power sources. It’s easy to manually switch between hybrid mode, gas-only “eSave” mode to save your battery for later, or EV mode to avoid burning gas.
In the normal driving mode, the regenerative brakes are largely imperceptible. Slowing down and stopping this SUV is pleasantly uneventful, which we can’t say about every hybrid. Whether driving around town or cruising on the highway, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is about as pleasant as anything in the Grand Cherokee lineup.
Electrification doesn’t compromise this Jeep’s off-road chops; it improves them. Electric torque is handy off-road, eliminating the need to rev up the engine to make the wheels do what you want. Meanwhile, the Quadra-Lift air suspension system on all but the base trim improves both on-road comfort and off-road capability, giving you up to 10.9 inches of ground clearance.
We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of midsize SUVs, including this Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has an all-electric range of 25 miles on a full charge. When those electrons are used up, it gets a combined fuel economy rating of 23 mpg in hybrid mode. That’s only one mpg better than the V6 in the non-hybrid Grand Cherokee.
Although the range and efficiency specs of the Grand Cherokee 4xe are just okay by plug-in hybrid standards, it has, by far, the lowest fuel costs of any Grand Cherokee. According to EPA estimates, the monthly fuel cost of the 4xe is about $62 lower than the non-hybrid V6 model with AWD.
The battery achieves a full charge in 2-3 hours using a Level 2 home charger. When plugged into a regular household outlet, it takes about 12 hours.
The starting price nearing $60k is partially justified by an upscale interior with a long list of standard features. This premium cabin includes a panoramic sunroof, heated front and rear seats, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, and Alpine audio. And that’s just the base trim.
The cabin in the Trailhawk model strikes a nice balance of rugged and premium, while the Overland and Summit trims are luxury SUVs by anyone’s standards. Features include extra-soft Nappa leather upholstery, multicolor ambient lighting, a stellar McIntosh 19-speaker audio system, and more safety tech.
We’re impressed that the Grand Cherokee 4xe has the same dimensions for passenger and cargo space as the non-hybrid Grand Cherokee. The bigger batteries of plug-in hybrids often compromise interior space, but that isn’t the case here.
We found the back seats accommodating for adults with 38.2 inches of legroom, about average for a midsize SUV. You get 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 70.8 cubic feet with the back seats folded down. The cargo room is about average for this class, like the rear legroom. The Grand Cherokee 4xe has more cargo space than the Chevy Blazer and Nissan Murano but less than the Honda Passport and Ford Edge.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a rugged and upscale aesthetic befitting its personality. It looks almost identical to the non-hybrid Grand Cherokee except for the “4xe” badging and blue front recovery hooks on the Trailhawk and Overland models. The rugged Trailhawk takes the blue motif further with a blue hood stripe, a blue “Trail Rated” badge, and a blue recovery hook in the back.
Quadra-Trac II AWD system
The standard Quadra-Trac II AWD system in the Grand Cherokee 4xe makes this hybrid SUV excellent for snowy roads and off-road adventures. It has a 2-speed transfer case and can direct up to 100 percent of available torque to one axle.
Uconnect infotainment system
The Uconnect infotainment system in the Grand Cherokee is feature-rich and easy to use, with a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Essential connectivity features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard.
Rugged Trailhawk model
The Trailhawk is the most off-road capable model in the Grand Cherokee family, and it comes exclusively with the 4xe powertrain. On top of a rugged appearance package hinting at its capability, it has the Quadra-Drive II full-time AWD system, all-terrain tires, and Quadra-Lift air suspension, giving it up to 10.9 inches of ground clearance.
Luxurious Summit trim
The Summit trim turns the Grand Cherokee 4xe into a genuine luxury SUV. Its long list of premium features includes Nappa leather seats, massaging front seats, a McIntosh audio system, 4-zone automatic climate control, Active Driving Assist, and much more.
Active Driving Assist
Optional on the Overland trim and standard on the Summit model, Active Driving Assist makes highway driving nearly effortless by helping keep you centered in your lane at a safe distance from the car in front of you.
Premium audio systems
An Alpine 9-speaker sound system comes standard, and the 19-speaker McIntosh system in the Overland and Summit models is one of the best audio systems we’ve tested in an SUV without a luxury badge.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain of the Grand Cherokee 4xe consists of a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Quadra-Trac II AWD system with a two-speed transfer case is standard on all but the Trailhawk model, which gets the Quadra-Drive II full-time AWD system with an electronic locking rear differential.
This hybrid powertrain makes 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 6,000 pounds. That’s more power and torque (but less towing muscle) than the optional V8 in the Grand Cherokee L.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The hybrid battery and its related components have an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty. Additionally, it comes with a 3-year complimentary maintenance plan.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has earned the coveted Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award, and it gets a perfect 5-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It gets top honors not just for its favorable crash-test results but because of its many standard safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and more.
