The capable and well-equipped Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe adds plug-in hybrid efficiency to one of America’s favorite midsize SUVs. Pricing starts at $62,485.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe (pronounced “four-by-E”) is one of America’s best-selling plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) because it takes an already great midsize SUV and adds electrified efficiency. If you keep juice in the battery, it has significantly lower fuel costs than the standard, V6-powered Grand Cherokee. In addition to better efficiency, the hybrid powertrain also adds better performance with more power and torque. This is beneficial both on-road and off, especially with the hybrid-only Trailhawk trim, the most capable off-roader in the Grand Cherokee family. Whether you’re on-road or off, running on gas or electrons, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is a highly versatile SUV.
The non-hybrid, 2-row Grand Cherokee and the 3-row Grand Cherokee L are reviewed separately.
We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of midsize SUVs, including this Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe.
There are no notable updates to the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe for 2025.
The 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has a starting sticker price of $62,485, with the range-topping Grand Cherokee 4xe Summit Reserve kicking off at $81,145. But Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Pricing currently suggests paying $2,562 to $3,490 less than MSRP, depending on trim and equipment. These prices are updated weekly.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is rather unique in its segment and mission, with a price to reflect that. At its $62,285 starting price, it’s significantly higher than something smaller like a Toyota RAV4 Prime ($45,085) or Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid ($41,065) or Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid ($49,365). But it starts lower than something like plug-in versions of the BMW X5 ($74,275) and Mercedes-Benz GLE ($72,500)

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe features a 375-horsepower hybrid powertrain matching a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels.
We are impressed with this hybrid’s quick acceleration from a standstill thanks to the instant torque delivery from the electric motors. In hybrid mode, the electric motors play nicely with the turbocharged gas engine. In our testing, we usually didn’t notice when it switched between power sources. It’s easy to manually switch between hybrid mode, gas-only “eSave” mode to save your battery for later, or EV mode to avoid burning gas.
When feeling especially efficiency-minded, we used eSave mode on the highway and EV mode in city driving to get the most out of the battery’s juice. However, you could easily leave it in hybrid mode all the time if you’d rather not worry about which power source you’re using.
In the normal driving mode, the regenerative brakes are largely imperceptible. Slowing down and stopping this SUV is pleasantly uneventful, which we can’t say about every hybrid. Whether driving around town or cruising on the highway, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is about as pleasant as anything in the Grand Cherokee lineup.
Electrification doesn’t compromise this Jeep’s off-road chops; it improves them. Electric torque is handy off-road, eliminating the need to rev up the engine to make the wheels do what you want. Meanwhile, the Quadra-Lift air suspension system on all but the base trim improves both on-road comfort and off-road capability, giving you up to 10.9 inches of ground clearance.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has an all-electric range of 26 miles on a full charge. When those electrons are used up, it gets a combined fuel economy rating of 23 mpg in hybrid mode.
That’s only one mpg better than the V6 in the non-hybrid Grand Cherokee, so you’re only getting the benefits of the hybrid if you’re plugging in regularly. The good news is that the battery achieves a full charge in 2-3 hours using a Level 2 home charger. When plugged into a regular household outlet, it takes about 12 hours.
Although the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s range and efficiency specs are just okay by plug-in hybrid standards, it has, by far, the lowest fuel costs of any Grand Cherokee. According to EPA estimates, the monthly fuel cost of the 4xe is about $50 lower than that of the non-hybrid V6 model with 4-wheel drive (4WD).
The starting price of over $60K is partially justified by an upscale interior with a long list of standard features. This premium cabin includes a panoramic sunroof, heated front and rear seats, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, and Alpine audio. And that’s just the base trim.
The cabin in the Trailhawk model strikes a nice balance of rugged and premium, while the Overland and Summit trims are luxury SUVs by anyone’s standards. Features include extra-soft Nappa leather upholstery, multicolor ambient lighting, and more safety tech. The available McIntosh 19-speaker audio system is one of our favorite audio systems we’ve ever tested, including in luxury cars.
We’re impressed that the Grand Cherokee 4xe has the same passenger and cargo space dimensions as the non-hybrid Grand Cherokee. The bigger batteries of plug-in hybrids often compromise interior space, but that isn’t the case here.
We found the back seats accommodating with 38.2 inches of legroom, about average for a midsize SUV. The nice, wide rear seats allow for three-across child car seats or two very comfortable adults. You get 37.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 70.8 cubic feet with the back seats folded down. The cargo room is about average for this class, enough for groceries, camping gear, or whatever your adventure requires.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a rugged and upscale aesthetic, befitting its personality. It looks almost identical to the non-hybrid Grand Cherokee except for the “4xe” badging and blue front recovery hooks on the Trailhawk and Overland models. The rugged Trailhawk takes the blue motif further with a blue hood stripe, a blue “Trail Rated” badge, and a blue recovery hook in the back.
Quadra-Trac II
The standard Quadra-Trac II 4-wheel-drive system in the Grand Cherokee 4xe makes this hybrid SUV excellent for snowy roads and off-road adventures. It has a 2-speed transfer case and can direct up to 100 percent of available torque to one axle.
Uconnect infotainment system
The Uconnect infotainment system in this Jeep is feature-rich and easy to use, with a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Essential connectivity features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard.
Rugged Trailhawk model
The Trailhawk is the most off-road capable model in the Grand Cherokee family, and it’s only available with the 4xe powertrain. In addition to a rugged appearance package hinting at its capability, it has the Quadra-Drive II full-time 4-wheel-drive system, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and Quadra-Lift air suspension, giving it up to 10.9 inches of ground clearance.
Luxurious Summit trim
The Summit trim turns the Grand Cherokee 4xe into a genuine luxury SUV. Its premium features include Nappa leather seats, massaging front seats, a McIntosh audio system, 4-zone automatic climate control, Active Driving Assist, and much more.
Active Driving Assist
Active Driving Assist, optional on the Overland trim and standard on the Summit model, makes highway driving nearly effortless by helping keep you centered in your lane and a safe distance from the car in front of you.
Premium audio systems
An Alpine 9-speaker sound system comes standard, and the 19-speaker McIntosh system in the Overland and Summit models is one of the best audio systems we’ve tested in any vehicle.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Quadra-Trac II 4-wheel drive system with a 2-speed transfer case is standard on all models except the Trailhawk model, which gets the Quadra-Drive II full-time 4-wheel drive system with an electronic locking rear differential.
This hybrid powertrain makes 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 6,000 pounds. That’s more power and torque (but less towing muscle) than the optional V8 in the Grand Cherokee L.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The hybrid battery and its related components have an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty. Additionally, it comes with a 3-year complimentary maintenance plan.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has earned the coveted Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award and a perfect 5-Star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It gets top honors for its favorable crash-test results and its many standard safety features, such as automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and more.
