Positive Review

"Best I have own American made"

I have own several Fords and Jeeps. I have owned my Compass for 2 years. I have never had any problems with this car. I can not say that for the Fords I have owned. The gas mieage is great as long as you reailze that you are not in a V6. I can get 27 miles to the gallon city and 31 on the hwy if you excellerate slowly. I wish that the value of the car would hold up better for resale but so far it has been my favorite car I have ever owned.

Critical Review

"Some good, but ALOT of bad"

Bought this car in 2009 with 13000 miles on it. Basically used it to drive home from college about a 4 hour trip. The first problem happened when I was going over a bridge about 2 years after I bought the car and all the lights on the dash went on and my car rapidly decelerated. I regained acceleration and the lights went off a few minutes later, but it was disconcerting. Brought it to the shop and they said the tire sensors were bad. $700 later that was fixed. A year after that the car was riding very jerkily and sticking in gears (the CVT is like that, but it was extreme), so I brought it in, and was told i needed an entirely new CPU system because mine was fried. $2000 later that was fixed. A year after that with about 65k miles on the car I was driving in the rain and the car was hydroplaning violently. I brought the car in and it needed new control arms/ bearings and tires. $1000 later that was fixed. At 95K miles I was told it would need new control arms and bearings again and some other parts would likely have to be changed. At that point I had had enough and traded it in. That was the bad, and as you could see there is a lot. The good was the gas mileage, storage room and 4x4 option. The car is great in the snow and cheap for long trips, but the mounting repair costs really changed my view of the car.

Excellent car
Pros

everything

Cons

Nothing as far as I experienced

Bought brand new in 08 LOVED it. It never let me down. I drove from Washington state to New York and back. Never once worried about making it there. Felt safe and comfortable. It got up and went when I needed it to. Rocking stereo and about average gas mileage. Milage depends on your driving style. Had a few issues as the years went on but that's to be expected. Things wear out. For those who know east coast winters my compass never faltered. Snow is no match for this baby.

Just okay
Pros

Spacious

Cons

A lot of stuff breaks week after week!

I bought my Jeep Compass used in 2019. With 84,000 miles on it. Everything was fine with it ran great and was a decent reliable car! Now I’m 2022, my compass has 114,000 miles and EVERYTHING, and I mean everything is going wrong with it! Started with my front lower control arms. Then it was my right axel.. now out of all things in the middle of July, it’s my AC!! My car is still clicking and sounds like it’s falling apart! Something else to add so I’m sure more is wrong! So overall I’m sure it’s great of you get it new and have it for a few years, but once you hit 100,00 miles be weary…

It’s an ok car
Pros

Good in snow

Cons

Transmission and AC Unit both very weak

Transmission and AC unit are the weak points . While in 4x4 mode it goes in snow really well . I had it in 10-12 inches and no problem . Only reason I wouldn’t recommend is the CVT transmissions are junk .

Worst vehicle I've owned!
Pros

4x4 only reason I bought to start

Cons

Everything minus the 4x4!!!

I've only had this car for 5 short years and in that 5 years I have dumbed nearly 10k into fixing things on this vehicle, most recently the entire subframe rusting through and nearly loosing my drivetrain (which I am not fixing, it's going to the dump and I'll be more then thrilled to see it smashed to bits)! That's even with me being aware of the issue of rusting being I live in Indiana and we get a bit of snow every winter with plenty of salt on the roads. I was extra aware to get it washed and all the salt cleaned off and this still happened. I do most of the repairs myself minus any suspension issues it's had which I paid 5k on just last year having nearly the entire rear end replaced. I can't even imagine what this vehicle would have cost me had I taken it in to a shop for all the repairs I've done on it myself. I don't honestly think anyone has the time for me to list the number of things that have gone wrong and repairs I've done on this horribly built vehicle! I have another vehicle (Honda) that is 4 years older that I have well over 200k miles on that has given me little to no trouble other then you usual wear and tear repairs. Due to my experience with this Jeep I have completely sworn off of the brand and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy!!

Pros

Its simple, good fuel economy, a sufficient engine

Cons

The raises glass stops working after 8 years

It is a car that leaves a lot to be desired for what we are playing fer, I am second owner, its interior quality is very plastic, but it is very simple, sometimes it can be fun to drive but it is no powerful, the spare parts gradually wear out

Best small SUV
Pros

Great in snow, durable, handles well

Cons

Having to remove bumper to replace headlights

I bought the 2007 Jeep Compass Sport 4x4 5 speed manual brand new. I have had it 14 years and put 216,481 miles on it. I still have it but just bought a newer 2018 model with 27k miles. The 2007 Compass has been an excellent car. I work for the US Forest Service staffing a fire tower in the remote mountains each summer and have to drive on some terrible roads. My mountaintop is 6208' elevation and during the course of the summer I will usually experience all four seasons including sometimes climbing a steep, narrow horrible road in several inches of snow. The Compass will handle it. This car has plenty of room for passengers of nearly all sizes to sit comfortably in both front and back for a trip and plenty of cargo space. It is probably THE most comfortable small SUV out there for traveling. The seats are not hard but provide great support and it absorbs the jouncing of bumps so you hardly feel them. Unlike competitor models with stiff hard seats and which ensure you feel every bump in the road. This car does have some minor drawbacks. It does not accelerate fast if you need to put on a sudden burst of speed for passing so you need to be mindful of that. But its not super slow, just not fast. However it handles extremely well and is easy to drive and will hold the curves as well as any small sporty car. Even though it may take a couple extra seconds to get up to speed, if you have the manual at least, it has plenty of power and will hold its speed going up grades. I've driven this car hard but maintained it well. With the mileage and roads I drive I've had to replace brakes and shocks but it has need no engine or transmission work other than regular maintenance. Do pay attention to the alignment if you are driving rough roads, this can ruin a set of tires in a hurry and with 4x4 you have to replace them all at once. The other thing is the plastic bumpers are not durable. If you hit a deer or a deer hits you which is bound to happen eventually if you drive that many miles in deer country, you are definitely going to have some damage to bumper, headlights, and/or marker lights. To replace either a headlight (the whole light not just a bulb) or a turn signal/marker light, the entire front bumper has to be removed which is a time consuming and expensive job. They should have designed that better, so be aware of that. I like the round headlight design of the original Compass and wish they wouldn't have made it into an imitation small Grand Cherokee. But its still the best small SUV so I bought the newer model. Unfortunately they don't make manual transmission anymore after 2020, failing to realize that some people actually like to drive their cars but this is fast becoming a lost skill and it's not a good thing. Thankfully I was able to get a newer model that still has manual. The only other thing that began to show up as the 2007 model began to be 12 or 13 years old with high mileage - there is a strange anomaly with the fuel tank. I live in Oregon where you can't pump your own gas. When the nozzle clicks off many attendants will keep stuffing to round up to the next dollar amount and it becomes very tedious to keep telling them not to. Something happens to the fuel tank when it gets old which causes it to have minor hitching, coughing, or stalling at traffic lights for the first 2 or 3 minutes after filling the gas tank. (though it always starts right up again when it dies, this is still unnerving especially if you are on a trip). And this is majorly exacerbated if the attendant stuffs the tank. Unfortunately there are only two solutions to this problem. Replace the entire gas tank. Or make sure not to stuff it. If you don't stuff it usually the problem is barely noticeable and knowing it might happen after you fill up you can usually deal with it. The road that holds my lift gate up also failed after 12 or 13 years of driving on these rough roads. So the lift gate is heavy to lift and I have to prop it open with a carefully placed stick, being sure it stays in place so the liftgate doesn't fall on my head. And this could certainly be fixed but with the mileage I wanted to put the money into a newer model. I will probably keep it at least for awhile as a spare vehicle and to save mileage on my newer one while I can. The paint has also held up quite will. Other than the minor cosmetic issue of a crack in the bumper where a deer ran into me, the car still looks great and runs great. Decent mileage too, about 25 mpg combined or 30-31 highway. Though the tank is only 13.5 gallons so you can't go a long way before refilling.
