"Terrific vehicle. Fun to drive - super dependable"

I purchased my 1999 Amigo from a private party when it was 14 years old and had 102k miles. It is the V6 4x4 with a removable hardtop. I couldn't be happier with this vehicle. It is super dependable and has very good 4 wheel drive that handles beautifully on snow and ice. After sitting for a week in subzero temperatures, it started on the first crank. It has the automatic trans and when it began to develop a clunk between 2nd and 3rd gears, I replaced the transmission selector switch (165.00) and it shifts like a dream. Not the most economical vehicle around, but the V6 is very peppy and gets the car up to highway speeds in just a few seconds. The ride is a little bit "trucky" but very tolerable on the highway. Bottom line is that this vehicle does a great job of getting me around regardless of weather. It is well built and has a unique style that always draws comments. I recommend it highly and predict it will be a modern day collectible.

Critical Review

"Say Hello to my Little Friend!"

Bought new in 1998...I had to have the exact opposite of twenty years of "Company Cars" - and I got it with a standard transmission, top down motoring and 4 wheel drive...Although I found the Amigo very uncomfortable, it is fun on a sunny day, if you want to deal with zippers and windows. I have to admit it has been very reliable with minimal out of scheduled routine work done. I don't believe I will ever try to replace this when the time comes (58,000 miles) - Im just going to drive it as a second car. One of the oddest cars I have owned!

Love Love Love
Pros

Style, Fun

Cons

No Isuzu's left in US. (not the Amigos Fault)

Have had my 98 same color as picture, from mile 4 off the lot (20 Years). Absolutely love it. Still looks sweet - regular maintenance and small things here and there. Definitely gotten my money's worth!

i love this car!
Pros

fun to drive, decent gas mileage for suv

Cons

not enough cup holders, little horn

great in the snow! reliable, fun.....personality plus! soft top and foldable rear seats make it great for hauling - similar to a little pick-up truck. 3 seat belts in the back - making for more passenger room than jeep cj. wider, with good center of gravity. great 4-wheeling! what a blast this baby is!

Great Car
Pros

Reliability, Performance & Looks

Cons

Gas mileage, Frame corrossion

I have a 99 Amigo and a 01 Rodeo Sport. Both are V-6 with the Amigo being a 5 Speed 4WD. It has enough room for young kids in the back and my wife is in love with her Rodeo Sport. The engine is strong / same as Honda passport and easy to maintain. Rides like a truck and would recommend applying an undercoat the frame as parts of the frame are prone to rust. Avoid buying from rust belt zones. Avoid the 4 cylinder as the Holden engine is not reliable and if you already have one, keep maintenance current and flush all fluids. I am looking to upgrade to a Vehicross but am tempted to save the Amigo till my daughter hits 16. My Amigo has 69k miles as of now

Most Reliable Vehicle I've ever owned

I bought this thing used in 2002 while I was in high school basically because it was cute and had a soft top and was 4 wheel drive. It was the best purchase I have ever made. Here we are 11 years later and the only mechanical problems have been a couple of belt replacements. I have just kept up on oil changes, brakes, and tires. There has never been a major issue come up. I know that when I go to the garage in the morning good Ol Penelope will start. She is so good in snow and ice I move the kids' car seats over to her when we have bad weather and make my husband drive the "nice" SUV that day. I have never been stuck!! I do think we are probably due for a new clutch...but the Amigo is 15 years old and has been driven every day. The only real negatives are the gas mileage in town, and the fact that the air conditioner can't really keep up in 100+ degree summers in Kansas. Which, I'm guessing is because of the soft top. Overall I would recommended this car to every one!! It is a beast!!

Super reliable!
Pros

Power, reliability, fun

Cons

Gas mileage, rough ride

Bought my Amigo with 59000 miles. It's a 3.2 6 cyl, 2wd, automatic. The AC was bad when I got it and have not fixed it due to "black death" but otherwise it's been great. Put a new top on it at 150000 miles and have gone through 2 sets of tires. Mileage has been been the one thing that is disappointing as it gets 16-17 mpg all the time. Plenty of power though. has started to use a little oil as it nears 200k. This is the second Isuzu I've owned and while they are not fancy, they get the job done.

Sweet car, comfortable ride, great on gas.
Pros

Fun to drive economical

Cons

Back seat needs two people to fold down.

Bought it used and have loved it from day one. Its comfortable reliable one of few things I can rely on. For a small engine its really has some pulling power.
