Positive Review

"great overall car"

Hyundai has a real winner on their redesign of the 2017 Elantra Great looking in and out.Very comfortable leather seating and very good visibility all around.Ride is as good as any midsize car and handling is very good at any speed.Even the steering is improved over previous designs.A very quiet interior, very little wind and road noise.Overall great car to drive.

Critical Review

"Bad Transmission"

Transmission failed at 3500 miles and needed to be completely replaced. Now at 6500 miles it's happening again. I have owned the car less than six months. Very unreliable if transmission fails every three months.

Do not buy

Bought this car last year with 66000 miles with a warranty and it ended up burning oil extremely fast and needing a new engine that was not covered under warranty.

It’s awesome

The car is awesome for the price I loved driving it smooth fast and very stylish. Definitely would recommend the only thing that is average about this car is handling other than that it's a great car and definitely would recommend.

Great, but wait….

So I’ve owned the 2019 Hyundai Elantra SEL in grey for a while now, and while it looks great, it isn’t as nice as you’d think. The car is cheaply made, and the inside feels very flimsy and non-durable. Everything is simple and plastic, there is no complex designs/patterns/materials of manufacturing whatsoever, although the imitation carbon fibre on the gauge cluster and dash were a nice touch. I got rear ended by a different car at low speeds, and the bumper came right off and there were pieces everywhere… the radar for blindspot monitoring was even destroyed. This makes me questions the safety a little bit. On top of that, the speakers aren’t the best, and have no depth or surround to them. I compared this to 2 older Hyundai models I owned, the 2007 Elantra and 2007 Accent, and oh boy were they built tough and to last. The 4 speed in them wasn’t great, compared to the smoothness of the newer 2019 Elantra of course, as it had plenty of power and the gears worked flawlessly. Maintenance is relatively easy on all Hyundais including this one. One thing that disappointed me was how much quality degradation the 2019 Elantra had, and what Hyundai has become with their business model and their GDi engines. Hyundai’s golden years before 2011 were some of the best in the industry and that why I still own an older one. If you’re looking for styling and efficiency (yes the Elantra is very efficient) then it’s fairly hard to beat at this price point, otherwise I’d invest in a Toyota with higher mileage or get a golden age Hyundai and call it a day. Cheers.

Happy with it
Pros

Lots of extras for a small car

Cons

Not a BMW

I bought my Elantra Limited new in 2017 from the dealership. It is loaded and has leather seats. It still runs nicely and the problems I have had are few. At 4 3/4 years an engine coil had to be replaced. It was still under warranty and didn't cost me anything. There was an issue with my door at six years in that was covered under a recall. So far, I haven't had to pay for anything other than oil and tires. I wanted leather seats and this car has them, but I don't like the fact that it isn't smooth leather. It has tiny holes which I guess are for ventilation. Debris gets into the holes and I can't get it out and it seems like it is often lighter colored than the black seats and it really stands out. It has a nice sized trunk which I think holds more than a small SUV. Gas mileage is a little less than advertised. I am very happy with this car at the seven and a half year mark.

An OK vehicle, but very poor service department.
Cons

Very poor service department. Strange engine noises that never got explained properly, or corrected.

My 2017 Hyundai Elantra was just an OK vehicle. Sporadically the engine would make weird sounds, similar to a valve sticking. The dealer service tech told me that noise was the "turbo." The car did not have a turbo on it. Overall, the car was OK, but the dealer service department left much to be desired. For that reason, I will never purchase another Hyundai.

PAINT PEELING OFF ENTIRE CAR
Pros

Drives well

Cons

The paint on the entire car is peeling off leaving black base underneath

The white paint on the entire car is coming off in large chunks. The dealership wanted to patch it. This is ridiculous because it is an ongoing issue. I am not even sure if repainting the entire car would make a difference. What is causing it to peel? I have seen quite a few other Elantras with the same problem.
