"Amazing all around!"

I couldn't be happier. I am all about mpgs and looks. This car has it both. It has lots of room compared to other compact cars. The value is unbelievable. I got the limited with the navigation package. I couldn't ask for a better car.

Critical Review

"MPG Mileage is Marketing Hype"

I did research and took my time before deciding to purchase an Elantra instead of a Prius. Supply was short and all the dealers in a hundred mile radius were asking premium prices for the Elantra in the fall of 2011. So I crunched the numbers again and still with the MPG of 29/40, I couldn't see how I could go wrong. Unfortunately, the car does not deliver anywhere near the expected 35 MPG in mixed driving. I know all the tricks for getting optimal gas mileage and know its "sweet spot." I also use quality gas, the same pump, and take the number of gallons in as soon as the pump clicks off. I calculate the actual MPG myself because the digital guage is a bad joke. It has shown an MPG as high as 80 around the city and as low as 20 cruising at 60MPH on the highway. I have even watched it change while not moving. Of course the dealer can find nothing wrong with it and they have every excuse in the book for the poor MPG including weather, or that the car is not broken in, but as the weather has gotten warm and I have put more miles on the car, the mileage has gone down to 26MPG in mixed driving. To add insult to injury, the car already needs new shocks in the back due to a design problem that causes an annoying and dangerous clunck at the slightest bump or dip in the road, and the foam shifted in the driver's seat within the first two weeks of owning the car, while the heater spewed little greasy specks on the new upholstery. A check of the cabin filter showed nothing to account for this, and since this check, there is now an unpleasant musty smell whenever I use the blower. The vehicle that Elantra replaced was a heavier van with over 120,000 miles on it and it got only slightly less mixed MPG, and the upholstery still looked good! Hyundai needs to be held accountable for it smarketing claim of "40MPG never looked so good." Other drivers are getting better mileage so Hyundai needs to take responsibility to find out why some Elantras are not preforming, starting with the dash guages. Their dealers seem to be clueless.

Manual Hatchback is great!
Pros

Price, storage, interior features, reliability

Cons

Quality of interior finishes

Overall, super stoked with the performance from my Hyundai hatchback. The interior features that it does have were well thought out (heated seats, easy to use bluetooth connection). Some finishes are cheaper (the gear shift definitely looks aged) but that's expected with a budget car. No major mechanical fixes so far, and the manual is fun to drive.

Overall Great Value vehicle

Cons

Long trip comfort

I have had this vehicle since it was new. Very minimal maintenance compared to other vehicles I have had. Rides well, Gas mileage is amazing. 23+ city, 32+ highway. When the engine was new that was5marginally higher. 26 city, 34 hwy. Originally they claimed I would get 40 hwy, and it just never got there, I would guess because of it's heavy body. That's ok though, as it has pretty much maintained a MPG 14 years later and is a very reliable car to own. I would buy this car again in a heartbeat. This unit was Mfd in S. Korea, and has much thicker steel than my husbands 2017 model, and may be why the MPG is less than his. His 2017 gets 28 city, 41 hwy easily. The original paint job on this vehicle is AMAZING, i don't have to wax, it stays shiny with a good wash. The body has resisted rust on areas that have small scratches. The stability of the ride is above average, and the pep upon acceleration is just amazing.

Junk engine low compression
Pros

Dead motor and transmission

Cons

Looks cool

Bought the car used with 76,000 miles on it at 101,000 miles. The transmission went at about 105,000. I got a really bad stalling issue on the freeway which made it very dangerous as it could cause a serious car accident with loss of power the mechanics tried to do a tuneup on it and that didn’t work another mechanic looked at it and said you need an engine. It’s got low compression.

A Great Car, Until It Wasn’t
Pros

Very sporty, comfortable and smooth ride

Cons

Speakers have a hard time in the cold and high oil consumption

I owned the 2016 Hyundai Elantra Sport trim, and overall, it was a great car—stylish, fun to drive, and practical. I really loved the manual transmission and heated seats, which made it a joy in all seasons. However, I did experience an issue with the speakers struggling to work properly in cold weather. Unfortunately, what started as a great car turned into a massive disappointment. The engine burned through over 4 quarts of oil in less than 5,000 miles without any warning or signs of trouble. It ran fine until we suddenly heard engine knock, yet there was no check engine light. We had to tow the car to avoid worsening the damage, but by the time the repair shop inspected it, it was too late. They added oil and tested the engine, but it shut itself off—indicating severe damage. What made it even more frustrating is that we had just invested in new tires, brake pads, rotors, and had replaced a faulty brake caliper, thinking the car was in great shape. The only repair options were to rebuild or replace the engine, both of which were too costly for us, so we had to scrap the car. This was heartbreaking, especially because we had only owned it for a little over a year and relied on it heavily as a family. On top of that, we found out that our insurance company had blacklisted the car model because it’s known for being a high theft risk, which made insurance premiums significantly higher. While we are incredibly disappointed with the car’s failure, we’ve learned our lesson to check the oil more often in the future, as that was also a mistake on our part. It was a huge emotional and financial loss for us, and unfortunately, we will not be returning to Hyundai for our next car.

2013 Elantra Limited still going strong

Bought new in '13. Drove home health. Lots of miles. Only mechanical issue Ive had to fix besides regular maintenance, tires, battery, filters etc was a cam sensor. Thats it!! Still runs great. Looks great. No peeling paint. No rips in interior. Has 198,000 miles. Probably will replace shocks struts soon. No knocks, burning oil.... nothing. BEST CAR IVE EVER OWNED. I'm 54 and had lots of vehicles but this one has been the most economical and reliable of all of them and all makes. Still gets 32mpg combined highway and town. Highway is about 38 on low side and as much as 45 mpg on interstate. Highly recommend. I just retired it over to my 16-year-old daughter with the talk that this car is my baby. Take care of it. Im driving a Chevy 2500Hd WT and I want my little Elantra back lol. Good buy. Reliable little car.

Car runs great

The car still runs like a champ, but few things they could have done better: 1) the driver visor has fallen apart and junk yards can't keep them in stock ($300 to order visor + $ to install; 2) exterior paint on passenger side on door handle totally faded (I have seen it on others).
