The Honda HR-V is an exceedingly practical choice in subcompact SUVs. It has one of the roomiest interiors in its class, it’s good on gas, and it has a solid record of good reliability and resale value. Some rivals in this segment are more athletic, like the Mazda CX-30 and the turbocharged Kia Seltos. However, if practicality and value are what you’re looking for, then the HR-V is worth a test drive.
2022 will likely be the final model year for this generation of the Honda HR-V. Honda already sells an all-new HR-V (with a hybrid option) in other parts of the world, and we’re expecting to get an Americanized version of that SUV for the 2023 model year. Until then, the 2022 HR-V remains a good value in subcompact crossovers.
2022 Honda HR-V pricing starts at $18,480 for the HR-V LX Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $23,115 when new. The range-topping 2022 HR-V EX-L Sport Utility 4D starts at $22,612 today, originally priced from $29,415.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Honda HR-V models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.
The Honda HR-V benefits from sharp handling, but it isn’t very fast. The sole 4-cylinder engine is good for driving around town, but it tends to run out of breath when trying to pass on the highway. Once the HR-V does reach highway speed — which takes a little while — it’s a comfortable and efficient highway cruiser.
The HR-V gets a little more fun to drive with paddle shifters on the Sport trim and up. Still, if you’re looking for a performance-oriented small crossover, you’ll find what you’re looking for from a rival like the turbocharged variants of the Kia Seltos or Hyundai Kona.
Handling is pretty agile thanks to the short wheelbase and small footprint of the HR-V. It’s maneuverable on city streets and easy to park just about anywhere.
The interior is one of the best qualities of the 5-passenger Honda HR-V. Thanks to clever packaging by putting the fuel tank under the front seats, this small SUV has tons of interior space. There’s plenty of room to comfortably seat two adults in the back seats, which not every SUV in this class can claim. On top of that, cargo space is generous to boot, especially with the rear seats folded down.
The HR-V has a class-exclusive Magic Seat system. This allows for several different configurations of the seats, like the back seats folding up to hold taller items. You can also fold the front passenger seat all the way back to carry objects up to 8 feet long.
The interior design is a bit plain, but it’s practical and ergonomic. The seats are supportive and the ride is compliant, making this a surprisingly comfortable long-distance cruiser for an SUV this size.
The Honda HR-V speaks the corporate design language of the Honda brand. It has front-end styling similar to the bigger CR-V, and it has a few stylish body lines to keep things visually interesting. Consider the Sport trim with unique 18-inch black wheels and more gloss black exterior trim for a sportier look.
The size of the HR-V falls right in line with the rest of the subcompact SUV segment. Its dimensions are very similar to the Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, and Chevy Trailblazer.
HONDA SENSING
The Honda Sensing safety tech suite that comes standard on the EX and EX-L trims of the HR-V includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and more.
MAGIC SEAT
The class-exclusive Magic Seat system in the HR-V allows you to customize your interior to optimize the balance between passenger space and cargo space depending on your needs.
Standard features on the base LX trim of the 2022 Honda HR-V are a bit sparse. It comes with the basics like power windows and power door locks plus air conditioning, cruise control, 17-inch alloy wheels, the Magic Seat system, LED brake lights, and a roofline spoiler.
The standard infotainment system is a 5-inch touchscreen with a backup camera and Bluetooth. This system has a small screen and few features compared to the base infotainment system in most rivals.
As you move up the model range, the Honda HR-V offers more features that improve this crossover’s comfort, convenience, and technology. The Sport trim brings a significant upgrade to the infotainment system. A 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay replaces the outdated 5-inch screen in the LX trim. The Sport model also adds a distinct appearance package with 18-inch black wheels. More features in every HR-V except the base trim include paddle shifters, roof rails, and fog lights.
Upgrading to the EX model adds some premium features to the HR-V while keeping the price reasonable. EX is where the Honda Sensing safety tech suite becomes standard. Honda Sensing includes a collision-mitigation braking system, road-departure mitigation system, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist. EX also adds a 6-speaker audio system, LaneWatch blind-spot monitoring, heated mirrors, heated front seats, power moonroof, and automatic climate control.
The top EX-L trim has a feature list similar to the EX model. The “L” in EX-L indicates the addition of leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
All-wheel drive is optional on every trim of the Honda HR-V.
In typical Honda fashion, the HR-V is an easy car to shop for. Just pick the trim, the paint color, and whether you want AWD, and that pretty much completes the shopping experience. Additional options and packages are limited to dealer-installed options like all-weather floor mats and splash guards.
The only engine available in the Honda HR-V is a 1.8-liter inline-4 linked to a CVT automatic transmission. It produces 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque, which is fine for around town, but accelerating to highway speed requires some patience. What you lose in performance you make up for in fuel efficiency; this engine is excellent on gas.
Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, and all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional across all trims of the 2022 Honda HR-V. All-wheel drive is great for improving all-weather traction on slippery roads, but the HR-V is not an off-roader.

Collision Mitigation Braking
This feature comes with HR-V models equipped with Honda Sensing. It can mitigate a potential accident by automatically applying the brakes if you’re approaching the car in front of you too fast.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Also included in the Honda Sensing suite is adaptive cruise control, which automatically maintains a safe distance from the car in front while cruise control is on.
LaneWatch
Included on the EX and EX-L trims, LaneWatch incorporates a camera in the passenger-side mirror that shows what’s in the blind spot when you activate the turn signal.
