If you’re looking for an economical small car but also want the ground clearance and all-wheel-drive ability of an SUV, the 2019 Honda HR-V satisfies both criteria and then some. The HR-V sips gas, offers a wide variety of trims and options and retains excellent resale and reliability scores.
If you plan weekends in places with rugged terrain, a Jeep Renegade and Subaru Crosstrek are better choices. Those seeking a sportier ride will like the Mazda CX-3 or Toyota C-HR, the latter offering its suite of driver-assist technology on every model, not just the upper trims.
