Check out the Sierra HD need a heavy-duty truck that’s capable and sophisticated in equal measure. Leaning toward capability, the All Terrain X package will conquer a plethora of conditions, while the Denali versions are the most lavish. The 2019 Sierra HD has much in common with its Chevrolet Silverado HD stablemate, but the GMC version feels more upscale.
Sometimes, best-in-class towing means a lot. A properly equipped Sierra 3500 HD with the diesel engine can pull a maximum of 22,900 pounds (which is still a lot), whereas the Ford F-350 can tow 34,000 pounds. The Ram 3500 HD isn’t far behind the Ford.
Ebony Twilight Metallic is a fresh paint-work option for the new GMC Sierra HD. And that’s it.
The 2019 GMC Sierra HD is, as those last two letters suggest, the heavy-duty version of the regular Sierra half-ton pickup. Actually, it’s “versions” in the plural because there are the “2500” and “3500” variants, with maximum payloads rated at three-quarters of a ton and one full ton, respectively. These trucks are extraordinary machines, capable of towing, hauling and working at demanding levels. The optional diesel engine has an astonishingly muscular 910 lb-ft of torque, while the All Terrain X version is an off-roading rock star. Yet they can also be as comfortable and refined as a luxury SUV. The light-duty Sierra has been updated for 2019, but these heavy-duty models carry over from the previous year.
2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab pricing starts at $28,389 for the Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab Pickup 4D 6 1/2 ft, which had a starting MSRP of $43,395 when new. The range-topping 2019 Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab Denali Pickup 4D 6 1/2 ft starts at $50,514 today, originally priced from $70,665.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.
Since the 2019 Sierra HD is meant to work for a living, it’s set up to be at its most comfortable when there’s some appreciable load involved. That’s when it really impresses, making long highway stretches a breeze. General getting around is surprisingly easy and the well-equipped cabin is wonderfully tranquil — even when the big diesel engine is in the picture. Speaking of the diesel, hook up a 10,000-pound trailer, then haul it 6,000 feet uphill, and this engine won’t even break a metaphorical sweat. Trailer-sway control, a robust 6-speed Allison automatic transmission and the engine’s exhaust-brake system help to keep everything calm and composed on the way back down.
It’s hard to believe the Denali version is supposedly a work truck. From the inside, aluminum trim on the instrument panel, perforated leather seats with contrasting stitching, and a heated steering wheel convey the air of an upscale SUV. But even the most unadorned model doesn’t feel like drudgery, thanks to things like a 7-inch touch screen for the infotainment system, rearview camera, air conditioning, powered windows/locks, and a split-folding front-bench seat. The trim levels in between, SLE and SLT, pile on amenities like dual-zone climate control and power-adjustable pedals.
Imposing. But arguably handsome. It’s one of those vehicles where must-have elements — like the huge chromed grille, prominent air scoop in the power-domed hood, LED daytime running lights, and CornerStep rear bumper — harmonize to form a pleasing design. Regular-cab 2500/3500 models and the 3500 crew cab have an 8-foot bed. Double-cab versions offer the choice of 8-foot or 6.5-foot beds. Dual rear wheels are exclusive to the 3500.
INTERIOR
A mix of high functionality and deep luxury makes the Sierra HD a stand-out truck. One aspect exhibits large gauges and rubberized switchgear that can still be manipulated by a gloved hand, plus wide and comfortable seats. Another aspect enjoys features like wireless device charging, Wi-Fi and fine leather upholstery.
6.6-LITER DURAMAX ENGINE
“Duramax” is General Motors’ brand for its turbocharged 6.6-liter V8 diesel engine, which is one of the best in this class, endowed with a mighty 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. The Duramax is also compatible with B20 fuel (20-percent biodiesel).
At its entry level, the new GMC Sierra HD comes with a sturdy gasoline-fed 6.0-liter V8, along with air conditioning, rearview camera, 17-inch steel wheels, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and the mandatory safety features. Anything above the base 2500 HD also receives an automatic locking rear differential. Go up to SLE for a remote locking tailgate, carpeting and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. At the SLT level are leather upholstery, heated/power-adjustable front seats, power-folding mirrors and a 110-volt outlet. The top Denali trim has virtually everything the Sierra HD range offers, such as navigation, upgraded Bose audio, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
The main option, highly recommended, is the turbodiesel V8. Add all-wheel drive and the 2019 Sierra HD is equipped to meet a ton of challenges. A gooseneck adapter and a fifth wheel are also available for optimum towing talents. An array of driver aids can be had (forward-collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, etc.), as well as a rear-seat entertainment system. The All Terrain HD package brings black-finished 18-inch alloy wheels wearing all-terrain tires, Z71 off-road suspension and skidplates. Other extras include a snowplow-preparation package, and GMC’s Digital Power Assist power steering, improving stability and steering feel for less stress when hauling and trailering.
The standard engine for the 2019 Sierra HD is a 6.0-liter V8 running on gasoline. Or there’s a version that uses compressed natural gas (CNG). With 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, the regular version is tough enough. The real power player, though, is the optional 6.6-liter V8 turbodiesel developing 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. In common with many other big diesel engines, this one has an exhaust-braking feature, which is most welcome when driving downhill. Each engine option is connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission, but the diesel has one from the renowned Allison company. Rear-wheel drive is the default setup, with all-wheel drive as an option throughout. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) doesn’t provide fuel-economy estimates for this size of vehicle.
