Positive Review
We took delivery of a loaded SLT extended cab on 2-19-15. We had driven a 2015 Colorado Z71 and another SLT, both crew cabs, before factory ordering. Ours is Onyx black with the Cocoa/Dune interior. The Canyon won our vote because you can't get the lighter interior colors in the Chevy and the seats in the Z71 were harder than in the GMC. Also, the GMC has more padded surfaces inside. Both the Chevy and the GMC drive very well and we particularly like the electrically assisted steering, relatively plush interior, brawny good looks, overall build quality and practical size and economy. We added a hard tonneau to permit dry hauling. The truck rides pretty well, though still "trucky" (one of our other vehicles is a full sized Lexus for comparison and we traded in a Corvette). We actually plan to use the truck as a highway cruiser, so it had to be comfortable for long periods of time. The high belt line can create a bit of claustrophobia and the steeply raked "A" pillar can interfere with entry, but once situated, outward visibility is very good compared to most new cars and crossovers. Not sure we will ever exploit all the entertainment tech, but really like the nav system and Bose audio. The rest is intuitive and pretty easy to figure out. Wi-Fi works well. Overall, great looking, fun to drive, adequate power, semi-luxurious and pleasant to be in!
Critical Review
I bought my 2015 GMC Canyon, ext cab WT in Nov ’15 with only 600 miles on the clock. Even though it is the WT version it’s the upgraded version with power windows, locks, remote, air and the V6 complete with the tow package capable of towing 7,000 lbs. The 2nd Gen truck looks awesome and great looking inside and out but that’s where it ends. I’ll admit that the engine is very powerful but the transmission and computer is the weakest link. It’s not a pleasure to drive. Example: driving on the highway, anything between 55 up to 70 and then needing to slow down and then pick back up on speed it starts to chug and surge like it’s struggling for the gear or running out of gas. It does the same thing when trying to climb a hill or going around a corner. I’ve had it into the dealership twice, had the computer upgraded and talked with them several times on the phone but they still don’t have a fix. I would have gladly exchange the 22+ MPG for 17 or 18 MPG to have it shift right. I would not recommend this truck. As of today of writing this, it only has 10,000 miles on it and I’m still not happy so I’m trading it in for a Jeep G.C. This was my first GMC and I was very disappointed and will never get another GMC again.

Been reliable.
Uncomfortable seats.
We bought this about two years ago. Engine has held up great but have had multiple issues with the air-conditioning. Very frustrating when it is 90+ degrees outside!
I went from a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 with no air conditioning, and no radio, but I loved that truck, just couldn't take the rough rider funk I was in. It looked like a mail truck so I camouflaged it with a little DYI. Being in a truck as comfotable, reliable, and appealing as my Canyon didnt take much adjusting to. I have been driving my GMC Canyon for a year next month, not only am I impressed with the comfort, style and especially the stereo system, I haven't had any issues with it, at all. I put less than 10k miles on it, and love the straight get up and go this truck has. Im not afraid of the gas pedal and know exactly where it is, and with a heavy foot I find myself enjoying the separation a little too much. It's unbelievably quick for a truck, the seats adjust to any position you want to drive in, windows are slightly tinted which is nice, the soft tonneau is a nice trunk like addition, with a nice step on each side of the rear bumper to help access the bed comfortably without looking like I'm 80, amd rolling into the bed, wired and equipped for a trailer, heated seats, rear defrost, on the fly 4wd, it honestly has so many features, Im still learning all the ins and outs of them all. The only thing I don't like are the rims and that's honestly my only complaint after a year. Thats actually the only thing outside of runners and a headache rack that I was going to change to matte black rims. The factory Bose Stereo is just sick, it's the loudest system I've had in any of my vehicles and I owned a Mercedes, 2 Infinity I 30's Land Rover, Toyota, and a Chevy Sierra. I've actually owned a heck of a lot of vehicles, excluding my SLK320 Hardtop, this truck is up there as the best I've owned, it is loaded, like I said and performs like it is. I'm not going to say I drive rough, but I get there, I like to give myself space on the road too, and just enjoy kicking it out and letting it go once in awhile, or most of the time. I haven't been off road, I live in Baltimore, Maryland, it's all off road on these city bombed out streets. It wasn't too expensive, gets great gas mileage adjusting back and forth from 4 to 6 cylinders depending on how you're driving. It has a nice little gauge in the info bar i use a lot to help save gas by giving miles per gallon for 25,50 and up to 100 mile intervals, showing exactly how your driving coincides to gas comsumptiom, which is fantastic. I heard it holds it's value, it should, it has everything in it for any adventure, short day trip, or succinct drive out of boredom, and can do the work as well. I have a 12' trailer, loaded with a few mowers on the weekends to cut some of my relatives lawns for them, it handled the weight perfect. I take good care of it, keep it looking like it was just washed and waxed all the time. Great truck, it's only been a year, but I love it so far and have zero legitimate complaints!
Good power & comfort.
8 speed Auto Transmission problems.
I like my 17' Canyon just fine, except for the 8 speed Auto Transmission. It started slipping at 63,000 miles. Dealer & GMC wouldn't respond to my questions. I was told by a A.T. shop that GMC had issued a TSB regarding the problem a couple years before. I never recieved that notice. Bottom line is that over $700.00 later I still have slippage / hard shifting, and at 100,000 miles, it's getting worse. I'll never trust or buy a GMC product again.
I recently traded my 2019 GMC Canyon simply because I was tired of the aggravation. Within a month of taking delivery in July of 2019, the steering wheel had to replaced, it was falling apart. This should have been an omen of what was to come. During the warranty period, the differential went, the heater core broke and the serpentine belt was replaced twice. Within a few months after the warranty expired, I had to replace the radiator, A/C compressor and several water and oil lines and the serpentine belt (for the 3rd time), and there was more. The truck had just 49k on it when I finally said, enough is enough. Over the last 25 years we have been a loyal GM family, owning 10 new GM vehicles in that time frame, but because of GM's total lack of responsive to these issues, we now own two Honda's. The Canyon is a real nice looking truck, but that's as far as it goes. Steer clear.
Mileage,ride,looks
step up tailgate would be great
This ride is great for me, very nice looking and the MPG is great for what I use it for. It is an AT4 but have not taken it off-road. Great looking and running.
Great mpg 20-29mpg
Very poor quality and service
I had recently owned a 22 2500 HD Sierra and I loved that truck. Not one single squeak or issue. This truck has been in and out of the shop 4 or 5 times now in 6 months. It makes a horrible squeaking noise over every bump. It’s been in for 3 visits just for this issue and they still can’t figure it out. First it was the parking brake lines rubbing (false) then it was the suspension it had a recall on some bushings (nope) and they had my truck for two days. They said it would make the noise for like 1k until the new suspension components adjusted (wrong). I just made a 4th appointment for this. The nav screen blacks out all the time also. It’s one thing after another. I’m furious. 50k truck brand new and makes noises like a car with 130k?! At this point I’m cutting my losses and selling it to Carmax because GM is garbage. Should have bought the Tacoma or frontier.
Yes, a fancy Colorado. But for the value it’s a step up. Just enough “luxury” to make it worth the difference in price
Sturdy smooth ride
Gas mileage
The trucks runs good looks great but for 2022 and money should of had more of the basic technologies found in imports.
