The Ford Transit is a class leader in full-size vans. It offers a choice of three roof heights, three body lengths, and three powertrain options, one of which is electric. If that weren’t enough variety, you can get a Transit as a cargo van, crew van, passenger van, cutaway, or chassis cab. Did we mention it has available all-wheel drive?
It’s clear that variety and customizability are the strong suits of the Transit. No matter the needs of your business or your family, you can configure the perfect Transit for you. On top of its practical strengths, it’s loaded with the latest safety, telematics, and infotainment technology, including a new available SYNC 4 system with a big, beautiful 12-inch screen.
As for rivals, the Ram ProMaster is a solid value choice in this class with front-wheel drive and affordable pricing.
But if you’re in the market for a full-size van at all, the Ford Transit is a must-test-drive.
2022 Ford Transit 350 HD Cargo Van pricing starts at $44,189 for the Transit 350 HD Cargo Van Extended Length High Roof w/9950-lb GVWR Van 3D, which had a starting MSRP of $51,705 when new. The range-topping 2022 Transit 350 HD Cargo Van Extended Length High Roof w/11,000-lb GVWR Van 3D starts at $42,657 today, originally priced from $52,540.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The Ford Transit is an easy van to drive, despite its substantial size. The steering is precise, the brakes are responsive, and the ride quality is smooth and comfortable on long-distance drives. Ford also made it surprisingly quiet inside, even on the highway.
The standard V6 engine gets the job done for most drivers who need a big van, but the available EcoBoost turbocharged V6 adds significant muscle.
The 10-speed automatic transmission on the gas-powered Transit models is a perfect fit for this van. It has four selectable drive modes: Normal, Eco, Slippery, and Tow/Haul. You can switch modes on the fly to best suit your needs.
The available all-wheel-drive (AWD) system inspires confidence if you’re diving this big van in slippery road conditions. AWD-equipped models have a Mud/Ruts drive mode, adding a measure of off-road capability.
As of this writing, we haven’t had a chance to drive the electric E-Transit. We’ll update this section when we do.
The inside of the Ford Transit is massive and highly customizable. Whether you’re a plumber, a flower shop, or just about any other business that needs a big van, the Transit can be customized just right with a wide variety of upfits available.
What’s behind the front seats depends on the configuration. The cargo van is just a big, empty van, the passenger van has 12 or 15 seats depending on the length, and the crew van has one row of back seats.
The front seat area is a shockingly nice place to be for a Ford work van. The seats are supportive and comfortable for all-day driving. The cargo van and cutaway have available swivel front seats, making it easy to access the cargo area. There’s plentiful storage space with roomy cubbies and cup holders in easy-to-reach places.
Keeping your devices for work or play powered up is easy in the Transit. There’s a USB port and 12V outlet in the storage spaces, plus more outlets in the available medium or large center consoles. In the passenger van models, there’s a 5-amp USB port in every row.
With three roof heights and three body lengths available, the look of the Ford Transit can vary quite a bit. In every configuration, the Transit is a nice-looking van with a practical and stylish design. It looks especially good in the XLT trim of the passenger van with a painted front bumper and a chrome grille surround. The E-Transit has a distinct 3-bar grille design with blue bars.
Among its many practical exterior features available are 253-degree rear cargo doors, a power sliding passenger-side door, long-arm, power-adjustable mirrors, an integral step in the rear bumper, and much more.
The cargo, passenger, and crew vans have traditional van bodies, but the cutaway and chassis cab models are slightly different. Both have a ladder frame behind the cabin that’s ready to customize. The cabin is fully enclosed on the chassis cab model and open in the back on the cutaway.
ALL-ELECTRIC E-TRANSIT
There’s an all-new, all-electric Ford E-Transit for 2022 with an estimated range of 126 miles. Available as a cargo van, chassis cab, or cutaway, the E-Transit gets the job done without burning any gas.
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE
Available all-wheel drive makes the Transit ready for just about any road condition. It even has a Mud/Ruts drive mode if you need to venture off-road.
Standard features are more generous than you might expect for a work van. On the Transit van they include a V6 engine, 10-speed automatic transmission, and four drive modes (Normal, Eco, Slippery, Tow/Haul). Other conveniences include a sliding passenger-side door, vinyl seats, vinyl floor, Bluetooth connectivity, a backup camera with trailer hitch assist, and dual USB ports.
The standard Ford Co-Pilot360 safety-tech suite includes a lane-keeping system, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, and forward-collision warning with dynamic brake support.
A Telematics Essentials package comes standard, including a dashboard overview, vehicle health signals, and planned maintenance tracking.
There are two additional powertrain options available on top of the base V6. An EcoBoost turbocharged V6 significantly boosts performance, and the all-electric E-Transit has a targeted range of 126 miles.
There are three body lengths and three roof heights available for the Transit. There’s a standard wheelbase and a long wheelbase, with the long-wheelbase having two different body lengths available. If you get the passenger van, the standard length has 12 seats, and the extended body has 15 seats.
Upgrading to the XLT trim of the passenger van adds some pretty premium features. It has a nicer front-end with a painted bumper and a chrome grille surround, front fog lights, heated, power-adjustable mirrors, a SYNC 4 infotainment system with a 12-inch screen loaded with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and navigation, cruise control, a large center console, blind-spot monitoring, cloth seats, and more. Some excellent optional features include leather seats and adaptive cruise control.
Upfit options in the cargo van, chassis cab, and cutaway models are almost endless. If you’re thinking about a Transit for your business, contact your local Ford dealer with your specific needs, and they’ll help you order the right one.
The 2022 Ford Transit has three powertrain options. Its base engine is a naturally-aspirated V6. From there, you can upgrade to a stronger EcoBoost turbocharged V6 that makes significantly more torque. Finally, the all-new E-Transit has an electric powertrain. Ford claims a range of up to 126 miles on a full charge.
Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional on gas-powered Transit models. The E-Transit is RWD-only.
Both gas engines mate to a 10-speed automatic transmission with selectable drive modes that’s well-suited to this van with quick and smooth shifts. The E-Transit uses a single-speed transmission.
