2015 Ford Transit 150 Wagon Review

Trevor Dorchies

By Trevor Dorchies

Updated December 23, 2019

Pros

Everybody needs a versatile mobile work station. Ford has partnered with 11 upfitters – eight of which are 20 miles or less from where the Transit is assembled in Kansas City – to offer a wide variety of options.

Cons

Do you plan on adding options to your work van, but are working against a strict budget? The bottom line can climb quickly depending on what you’re looking to add on.

What's New?

The 2015 Ford Transit is all-new for 2015. From the ground up, the new Transit steps in to fill the hole the E-Series work van leaves behind after more than five decades in production.

In order to stand out in a crowded work-van segment among the likes of the Ram ProMaster, Nissan NV and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the all-new 2015 Ford Transit Van (for cargo) and Transit Wagon (for passengers) offer oceans of variety: three roof heights, two wheelbases (regular – 129.9 inches, and long – 147.6 inches), and six body lengths. You can also configure the Transit to haul from eight to 15 passengers, and choose from three engine choices – all paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. A 3.7-liter V-6 is standard, but Ford expects the popular choice to be the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost. The 3.2-liter Power Stroke 5-cylinder diesel engine is ideal for people who plan on driving long distances from job to job.

2015 Ford Transit 150 Wagon Pricing

2015 Ford Transit 150 Wagon pricing starts at $19,394 for the Transit 150 Wagon XL w/Low Roof w/Sliding Side Door Van 3D, which had a starting MSRP of $34,655 when new. The range-topping 2015 Transit 150 Wagon XLT w/Medium Roof Van 3D starts at $15,223 today, originally priced from $38,990.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2015 Ford Transit 150 Wagon models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

Driving the Ford Transit 150 Wagon

Lumbering along at speed, the all-new Ford Transit’s turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine can get up and go in a spirited fashion, but you still won’t win any drag races. A very impressive and tight turning radius makes it easy to stick the Transit behind buildings in small alleys. The Transit’s unibody structure will make you forget about the E-Series quickly when behind the wheel, thanks to a nimble driving experience. When loaded up with passengers, the new Transit feels composed and is more than capable of handling all of the weight.

Interior Comfort

Work vans used to be a sparse and unhospitable place to spend a work day. That’s not the case anymore thanks to things like SYNC with MyFord Touch and comfortable, supportive seats. Combine those things with enough storage space up front to hold a tablet computer, a smartphone, and a few water bottles and you have the Transit’s interior. Cloth or leather seats are available and, unlike other competitors in the work-van segment, the Transit’s steering wheel tilts and telescopes which creates a comfortable driving position (we’re looking at you, Ram ProMaster).

Exterior Styling

The all-new Ford Transit comes in three roof profiles (low – 83.6 inches, medium – 100.8 inches, and high –110.1 inches) and six body lengths ranging from 217.8 inches to 263.9 inches. Tinted glass, 16-inch steel wheels with color-keyed hubcaps, and a black surround can be seen on the Aston Martin-esque front grille on all 2015 Transit models. As for the Wagon XLT, the Exterior Upgrade Package – which includes full wheel covers, a chrome grille and grille surround, and headlight trim – is standard along with everything previously mentioned.

Favorite Features

CREW CHIEF
An optional feature, but if you’re a fleet manager, this will come in handy when trying to boost productivity while reducing operating costs. Crew Chief gives reports on things like unsafe driving, fuel efficiency, and when a vehicle is due in for service.

3.5-LITER V6 ECOBOOST ENGINE
With more than 500,000 high-power/high-fuel-economy units already sold in Ford cars and trucks around the world, it only makes sense that the EcoBoost engine option is the way to go in the 2015 Transit.

Standard Features

For the 2015 Ford Transit, 16-inch wheels and hubcaps, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and power windows and locks are standard. Black front and rear bumpers with front lower valence and a rear step are also standard, along with short-arm, dual power side mirrors and tinted windows. The Wagon XL passenger van brings 6-speaker audio and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Wagon XLT gets a chrome grille surround, automatic headlights and an upgraded 8-speaker sound system.

Factory Options

A 10-way power driver’s seat, an engine-block heater and rear parking-aid sensors are just some of the available options on the 2015 Ford Transit. Other optional features include extendable mirrors, Crew Chief, cruise control, keyless entry, and SYNC with MyFord Touch with a 6-inch touch screen and navigation. A CNG/LPG engine prep package is available for models equipped with the 3.7-liter V6 engine.

Engine & Transmission

Depending on what you plan on using your 2015 Ford Transit for, there are three engine choices available, all of which are paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift and a tow/haul mode. Ford promises that the Transit will be as much as 46 percent more fuel efficient than the E-Series equipped with the turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine. The standard-issue 3.7-liter V6 is expected to get 19 percent better fuel economy than the highway fuel-consumption rating on the outgoing E-Series. The EPA has rated both of the V6 engines – the 3.5-liter EcoBoost and the 3.7-liter – at 14 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway. The 3.2-liter Power Stroke diesel 5-cylinder is not rated by the EPA.
