Positive Review

"Versatlie and Functional"

Great car for a family of four, benefits from the added horsepower over the prior Freestyle. Spacious inside, but needs some more tweaking of the 3rd row seats. The center console in the second row needs to be removed if you have carpooling of kids b/c with boosters you have to take them out to get to the third row. Also need to rework roof rack, suffers same problem as Freestyle w/no cross bar system, so can't attached roof accessories w/o aftermarket parts. Overall very happy.

Critical Review

"Its Complicated"

When this vehicle is great its great. However, there are several common and very expensive problems with this car. Common problem #1: Bad computer; Currently on 3rd computer at under 150,000 miles and they are expensive. Common problem #2: Transmission cooler goes out; ~600 repair Common problem #3: Vent/Defrost/Floor/Recirc actuators go bad; pretty easy fix unless the defrost/floor actuator goes out then the dash has to be removed to replace it. Common problem #4: Car is not water tight; water collects in doors when it rains hard Common problem #5: Anti-theft sensor inside drivers side door goes out causing involuntary activation/deactivation of door locks and lights, eventually killing battery (possibly a result of common problem #4?); cheap part but difficult to get to as the door panel has to be removed and, even then, the wiring has to be routed in hard to reach parts inside door Common problem #6: Keys will twist inside key fob causing a panic if this happens during starting the car as it must be very carefully removed from the ignition when this happens; have had this happen to both keys that came with the car and am currently using a hardware store key without key fob; this is inconvenient as I cannot lock/unlock doors with key fob Common problem #7: 6-disc CD changer goes out leaving your CDs trapped forever and only AM/FM to listen to unless you have the MP3 option to hook up an iPod; this is a common issue with the CD players on Ford vehicles from 2008 Other issues: poor gas mileage, hard shifting at times, sluggish when first started in cold weather, difficult to tune-up as three of the cylinders are at the back of the motor underneath a bunch of other stuff, heavy car tough on tires and brakes, small trunk space unless third row seats are folded down The good: Awesome A/C, very comfortable front seats (2nd and 3rd row not so much), built like a tank, great get-up-and-go acceleration (unless its real cold)

A little cramp to get to 3rd row seats

Was gifted to me about a year ago due to a transmission leak, put all original new solenoids and fixed the leak on axle for $1,300 and drives like new, best SUV I've owned and a collector car based on Ford only building this car for 2 years so rare on the road.

Pros

Reliably, great versatility, low maintenance

Cons

Gas mileage (now that gas is expensive again)

Updating my previous review. I have put over 100,000 in 3 years and it is still completely reliable.

Beast to work on, expensive parts
Pros

Cons

Everything

Bought this thing about a year and a half ago. Only paid $1400 out the door. Got it to hold me over till I got a newer ride. Knew I was going to have to put some money into it if I wanted it to last longer. Every part I bought for it was disturbingly over priced - like buying parts for an Audi. Installing those parts was even more of a pain because of the engine/tranny layout - not quite as nightmarish as an impala or camery of the same year, but super close - engine sits sideboards like a minivan. Ton of stuff has to come out of the engine compartment and off the engine just to change the spark plugs. Not the most roomy, especially for a tall person. Sits way too close to the ground and drives more like front wheel drive rather than an all wheel drive. Electrical seemed glitchy as well. Not as glitched out as an Audi, but glitched out enough to be annoying. Seemed like it burned more oil than a refinery. Easily put 2 quarts a month in the thing. No visible oil leaks. They only made this model for 2 years before dumping it. Will not by again, ever.

Most reliable car I've ever had.
Pros

Smooth ride, fun to drive, great on gas

I was lucky enough to get mine from my brother who got it off the lot. It's been in the family approximately 6 years and has never had any major issues. I've changed brakes, battery and a couple of light bulbs, oh, and 1 headlight. I'm grateful to be the owner of this not too well known vehicle and I don't want to think of having anything unrepairable happen to it as it's definitely worth putting parts into if it needs them but unfortunately everything isn't replaceable. (Knock on wood) I won't ever see the day it is not worth keeping up with.
