2019 Ford F350 Super Duty Crew Cab Review

Andy Bornhop

By Andy Bornhop

Updated December 02, 2019

Andy Bornhop is an author specializing in new cars, trucks, SUVs, crossovers and vans. He’s been admiring wheeled conveyances since he was kid and has been writing about them professionally since his college days. While Andy admires quality, technology, efficiency, and style, he’s also a big fan of utility, practicality and refinement, and therefore can find a Sprinter van as fascinating as a Corvette. Most important to Andy, though, is how well a vehicle responds to its driver.

Pros

If best-in-class towing and payload figures don’t win you over, the 2019 Ford Super Duty’s optional Power Stroke diesel engine will. It has 935 lb-ft of torque. (Yes, you read that right.)

Cons

If you’re pinching pennies (or trying to pay for your kid’s college education) a loaded 2019 Ford Super Duty pickup may not be your best choice. Top models fetch $88,000 or more.

What's New?

In a mostly carryover year, the Lariat Sport model gets a new Appearance Package with painted 20-inch wheels; an available FordPass 4G LTE modem provides better connectivity; and a new 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system with 10 speakers is available. Notably, CD players are no longer available in the Super Duty.

The 2019 Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup is built for people who need more than a half-ton truck. In other words, folks who tow heavy trailers or use their truck as a work vehicle in hardcore industries such as logging, construction or oil exploration. In essence, Ford’s F-250, F-350 and F-450 pickups are rolling tools, which is why they’re so common at job sites across the U.S. While heavy-duty competitors from Chevrolet, GMC, Nissan and Ram offer good towing ability, the Ford Super Duty is the champ, able to tow a maximum of 34,000 pounds when equipped with a gooseneck hitch. Topping it all off, the 2019 Super Duty, with its tough but light aluminum body, boasts one of the plushest cabins you’ll find in a full-size pickup.

2019 Ford F350 Super Duty Crew Cab Pricing

2019 Ford F350 Super Duty Crew Cab pricing starts at $35,320 for the F350 Super Duty Crew Cab XL Pickup 4D 6 3/4 ft, which had a starting MSRP of $51,990 when new. The range-topping 2019 F350 Super Duty Crew Cab Limited Pickup 4D 8 ft starts at $54,724 today, originally priced from $83,210.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2019 Ford F350 Super Duty Crew Cab models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

Driving the Ford F350 Super Duty Crew Cab

With either the 6.2-liter gasoline V8 or the 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8, the 2019 Ford Super Duty has no lack of torque. By full-size truck standards, acceleration is swift, and passing other vehicles on the highway is easy. While the diesel’s 935 lb-ft of torque is largely responsible for that stratospheric max tow rating of 34,000 pounds, most trucks in the Super Duty lineup range between 15,000 and 18,000 pounds when using conventional towing methods. There’s a familiar feeling inside the quiet and roomy cab, which comes as no surprise because the Super Duty shares its dash and seats with the half-ton Ford F-150. What’s more, the suspension is surprisingly compliant, and the optional Adaptive Steering helps reduce driver effort in slow-speed parking-lot maneuvering, such as when backing a trailer.

Interior Comfort

All three 2019 Ford Super Duty cabs (Regular Cab, SuperCab, Crew Cab) are roomy and built for comfort, with no shortage of available luxury. The cowboy-themed King Ranch, the Platinum and the top-of-the-line Limited coddle occupants in yards of leather while offering all the power-operated equipment you want. Heated and cooled front seats are available, as are 10-way-power adjustment and seat massagers. Sync 3, an intuitive multimedia hub offering Apple CarPlay, is standard on Lariat models and above.

Exterior Styling

The Super Duty remains big and boxy, with a sharply cut grille, headlights, mirrors and even fender flares. By now, you likely know the Super Duty’s body and bed are made from high-strength military-grade aluminum. This reduces vehicle weight without sacrificing toughness by allowing Ford to reinvest some of that weight in a stronger frame, axles and brakes. Even so, the Super Duty is lighter than the previous-generation Super Duty, so more of its Gross Combined Weight Rating (the max allowable combined mass of a vehicle, passengers and cargo in the tow vehicle, plus the mass of the trailer and its cargo) can be dedicated to carrying or hauling. Notable exterior details on the Super Duty include a tailgate step, LED lighting, power running boards, storable loading ramps, and a power-locking tailgate you can open with the remote.

Favorite Features

ADAPTIVE STEERING
Ford’s Adaptive Steering system automatically changes the steering ratio for improved highway comfort and easier slow-speed maneuvering. The overall feel/fluidity of the electric-assist system feels not unlike that of a conventional hydraulic setup.

DRIVER ASSIST TECH
Seven electronic eyes assist with everything from connecting a trailer to revealing objects outside the driver’s line of sight. Numerous camera lenses show a 360-degree view around the Super Duty, as well as a 180-degree forward view. Blind-spot monitors even take into account the trailer’s blind spot. Also cool: The tire-pressure monitor keeps tabs on truck and trailer.

Standard Features

The 2019 Ford F-Series Super Duty comes standard with a 6.2-liter V8 and a 6-speed automatic transmission, 4-wheel disc brakes, an integrated trailer-brake controller, trailer-sway control, a 4-/7-pin trailer tow connector and a trailer hitch receiver. The base Super Duty has 17-inch wheels, an 8-foot bed, cargo lights, manually telescoping mirrors and a damped tailgate. Safety is addressed in all 2019 Super Duty models with AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and six airbags, including a pair of side curtains.

Factory Options

A Super Duty can be as posh or as functional as you’d like. Focusing on function, you can order your Super Duty with a 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, a heavy-duty alternator, electronic shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel-drive system, protective skidplates, a Trailer Tow camera, a 5th-wheel or gooseneck towing kit, a spray-in bedliner, a block heater, power-deployable running boards and even heavy-service suspension. On the comfort/convenience/safety front, order your truck with leather, FordPass Connect Wi-Fi, Sync 3, adaptive cruise control and a panoramic moonroof. Calling the Super Duty options list “extensive” is an understatement.

Engine & Transmission

The 6.2-liter gasoline V8, which burns regular unleaded and produces 430 lb-ft of torque, is backed by a heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission. The 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 cranks out an earth-moving 935 lb-ft of torque and also mates to a 6-speed automatic. Trucks in this size category are not rated by the EPA for fuel economy, but let it be known that the Super Duty Crew Cab long-bed (with 8-foot box) has a 48-gallon fuel tank. The Power Stroke diesel requires DEF (diesel exhaust fluid).
