Pros

  • Class-leading payload and towing capabilities
  • Premium yet functional interior
  • Many engine options, including a hybrid
  • Multiple off-road and luxury models

  • Available BlueCruise hands-free driving system

Cons

  • Top trims get expensive

  • No diesel option

What's New?

  • Diesel engine discontinued
  • Black Appearance Package
  • Bed Utility Package

The Ford F-150 is America’s best-selling vehicle for good reasons. It does just about everything you could want a full-size truck to do with class-leading towing and hauling capabilities, impressive off-road chops when properly equipped, and an interior that’s both practical and upscale. With a wide range of trims, engines, and configurations available, there’s an F-150 for anyone in the market for a big pickup.

A few of the many engine options are a traditional V8, a twin-turbo hybrid V6, and even an all-electric powertrain in the F-150 Lightning (reviewed separately).

However, with the 2022 model year, the Power Stroke turbodiesel option has been dropped. Consider the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel or the Chevy Silverado 1500 Duramax if you want a full-size diesel-powered truck.

The full-size pickup truck class is getting more competitive all the time, but the Ford F-150 continues to be a consistent class leader.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Ford F150 SuperCrew Cab models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

Driving the Ford F150 SuperCrew Cab

Driving the Ford F-150 is pleasant in daily driving duties. It’s smooth and comfortable, and you get a commanding view of the road. Visibility is pretty good in all directions, and this is a relatively serene cabin for a truck. The F-150 has excellent off-road capabilities when the pavement ends, especially with the Raptor or the milder Tremor off-road models.

The naturally aspirated V6 and V8 engines will feel familiar to anyone who has driven a traditional pickup truck. We have to say our favorite engine option is the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine, which delivers responsive acceleration and confident pulling power while returning good fuel economy. There’s also a 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost engine, which is more efficient and less capable.

The PowerBoost hybrid V6 is another impressive engine with more robust acceleration and capabilities than you might expect from a hybrid. You’ll hardly notice when it switches between gas power and electric power, plus it’s very quiet. Stopping can be awkward because of the unusual brake feel, but that’s common with electrified vehicles.

Interior Comfort

The Ford F-150 is a vehicle that lets you choose your level of luxury. The base XL trim is a stripped-down, no-nonsense work truck, while the top Limited trim is a full-blown luxury vehicle. A wide variety of trims and option packages in-between makes the interior of this truck as nice as you’re willing to pay for.

In every iteration of the F-150, the interior is practical and functional. The controls are accessible for the driver to use, and everything feels like it is where it should be. At the same time, advanced tech features like an available 12-inch infotainment system, a digital gauge cluster, and wireless charging can make this a high-tech workhorse.

The interior of the F-150 is roomy and comfortable for the front-seat occupants. The back seats are a little tight in the SuperCab models, but this is a roomy, family-friendly truck in the SuperCrew models.

Exterior Styling

The untrained eye might not recognize that the Ford F-150 was just fully redesigned for the 2021 model year. It doesn’t look that different from the previous generation, but if you appreciate traditional styling in a pickup truck, you’ll like this look.

The aesthetic of the F-150 can change quite a bit depending on how you option it. The lower-end XL and XLT trims have a humble yet stylish appearance, the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trims have a more luxurious look, and the Tremor and Raptor models both have a rugged aesthetic hinting at their off-road capabilities. There are also appearance packages like STX, Lariat Sport, and a Black Appearance Package so you can customize the look of the truck.

In terms of size, the Ford F-150 is similar to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the Ram 1500.

Favorite Features

OFF-ROAD-READY RAPTOR
The Raptor is a fan favorite among off-road enthusiasts who want a truck that likes going fast off-road.

POWERBOOST HYBRID V6
The PowerBoost hybrid powertrain available in the F-150 delivers impressive capabilities while returning hybrid fuel economy.

Standard Features

The humble XL trim of the Ford F-150 is pretty sparsely equipped, which isn’t a bad thing if you’re looking for a no-nonsense work truck. Standard features include air conditioning, vinyl floors, cloth seats, and a SYNC 4 infotainment system with an 8-inch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The standard Ford Co-Pilot360 safety tech suite includes automatic headlights, automatic high beams, a lane-keeping system, automatic emergency braking, post-collision braking, and a backup camera with dynamic hitch assist.

Factory Options

There’s a wide range of options available for the Ford F-150. Different engines, cab/box configurations, trims, and option packages make this truck highly customizable to suit your tastes and your budget.

Most drivers will appreciate the creature comforts added with the XLT trim over the base XL model. XLT adds cruise control, power windows, chrome bumpers, a chrome grille, power mirrors, fog lights, power locking doors and tailgate, and Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0, which adds blind-spot monitoring, reverse brake assist, and rear parking sensors.

The Lariat trim brings a taste of luxury to the F-150. This is where features like leather seats (which are heated and ventilated in front), dual-zone automatic climate control, and navigation become standard. The luxury continues in the higher trims like King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited which add features like adaptive cruise control, higher-quality leather, premium audio systems, wireless charging, a dual-pane moonroof, and much more.

The available BlueCruise driving system allows for hands-free highway driving on roads that Ford has mapped.

There are two trims of the F-150 with standard 4-wheel drive and a focus on off-road performance. The Tremor is the more affordable of the two and adds features like off-road suspension, a locking rear differential, hill descent control, Trail Control (which is like cruise control for off-roading), and a unique appearance package.

The mighty Raptor kicks it up a notch with a high-output EcoBoost V6 engine, FOX off-road shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, a Terrain Management System with special off-road drive modes, and BFGoodrich all-terrain tires.

Engine & Transmission

Mechanical variety under the hood is one of our favorite things about the Ford F-150. The base engine is a traditional naturally aspirated V6 that delivers a satisfying balance of capability and efficiency. It’s upgradable to an old-fashioned V8 with more muscular capabilities.

There are multiple turbocharged engines available for the F-150. A 2.7-liter turbo V6 is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid engine for the F-150 and it delivers an impressive torque rating of 400 lb-ft. The most satisfying engine for the F-150 is a 3.5-liter turbo V6 which excels at performance and capability while returning respectable fuel economy.

A PowerBoost hybrid turbo V6 available for the F-150 is another engine that delivers an impressive blend of capability and efficiency.

Like just about every full-size truck, rear-wheel drive is standard and 4-wheel drive is optional for the F-150.

Unlike the Ram 1500 and Chevy Silverado 1500, there’s no diesel engine option for the F-150.
