Positive Review
I have owned this vehicle since Oct 01 and have currently racked up 112K miles. I have been pleased so far with ownership. Styling and pickup is good, handling is typical of a truck based SUV, and interior is well laid out. 4X4 great in the snow and for moderate off-road use. I still have the original rear brakes on the vehicle and the original tires lasted 100K miles. All routine maintenance has been performed and I have only performed typical repairs (brakes, alignment, fluid changes, etc.) Now for some downsides. Don't get this vehicle if you have kids. Rear seats on 2 door Explorer Sport are good for occassional use but not for continued use. Interior trim pieces now creak and groan as they have worked their way lose over the years. At 103K miles, the transmission began shifting back to first gear during the transition from second to third. Professionally flushed the system twice and problem gradually went away. I am still holding my breath to see if it comes back. Center console is no longer tight fitting and vibrates when you go down the road. Gas mileage only averages about 18MPG city/highway for a 2 door vehicle. Overall vehicle is still fun to drive and been more reliable than expected.
Critical Review
Very bad design one timing chain in front and one timing chain in rear to replace this rear chain you have to pull the motor!STAY AWAY FROM THIS SOHC engine this 4.03 is unreliable and poorly designed I have over $4,000 in a $2,000 vehicle

#3. Great SUV !!
Low power, and poor gas mileage.
I have had 3 Explorer Sports. Loved them. Paid cash for this 2001. Every option, but block heater. Almost $31,000.00 new. All were and are great SUV's. If they still made as 2 door, I'd consider one..
This car has held up great. Taken on trips. Got the 2 doors because I didn't want extra passengers. Only did regular maintenance. Still have it, don't want to give it up. Every time it gets a tune-up someone wants to know if I would sell it. Perfect for trips, wheelbase allows you to turn around in center of street. Drop back seats down and can load up from Home Depot. Carried just about everything, Easy to drive and maintain. Took care of it and it's taking care of me.
Looks like a funny box, truck-like 4.0L V6, 4WD..?
Slow, not practical, cheap interior, slow!
This car fell into my hands, for free after a wildfire..for an uncontrollable "18 year old man" but also not being a Ford guy, this was an interesting combo. The one I have specifically has 4wd which is good for the winter climate my mom & I live in, since now we only have one working car, I've gotten a good chance getting to know this car the past month. Most notably, it's slow. Highway driving involves a little more effort to keep going at higher cruising speed (65 for example) where it would rather coast at 50 with no pressure on the gas pedal. I also wish it got better gas mileage, I don't know what I get specifically with my more "safe driving" but on a full tank I could probably get 300+ w/ no A/C and 95% highway/freeway driving . Otherwise, it's a decent car, I'm able to maneuver it pretty easily, it's comfortable enough where you'll survive, bumps are kind of scary and so are taking turns too fast- keep that in mind. It's normal 2000's Ford materials and such, so cheap plastic and other cheaper feeling materials as well as panel aligning (at least for me) could be a possible issue if you pay attention to it- inside & out. "It'll get you to point A, and maybe point B, but don't go to point C" It might make it, but I don't want to push it...this car has been through alot, so I'll continue driving it until it doesn't want to..
I love my 2001 Explorer Sport. I've replaced the air conditioning, radiator, battery cable components, and hoses. Aside from tires and basic maintenance, no major issues. At 312,000 miles she feels good to go another 100,000. I couldn't be happier.
good transportation and good for hauling tools and
Two doors, alot of people prefer four
I've taken this car on lots of road trips to Colorado, Oregon, California, New Mexico , Very reliable, I can haul a lot of stuff with it, take it fishing and camping. I like that you can put tools in the back and lock it up. Good car for a handy man, daily transportation. It has 125, 700 miles on it. I'm retired so I don't use it every day and I have another car, So that's why this car has low mileage. Tires are good and I just had the oil changed, Paint is in pretty good shape too .
Fast
Back door won’t open.. no big deal to me
I bought it from an individual... very reasonable and reliable.. I needed that cuz I use my truck for work.
Sporty, fun to drive, great handling
Rusting, yearly expensive repairs
I received this car from my sister when she moved into the city after she owned it for 2 years (she bought it new). I absolutely love this car. It has needed a lot of work over the past 13 years - new transmission, radiator, multiple batteries, rotors, axles, u-joints etc. But it has been worth it! I love driving it, it's fun and sporty, and with the 4WD it handles amazing in the snow (we live in the northeast). It is beginning to show its age though with the rust we don't think it will pass next inspection. I will be sad when I have to say goodbye! We are looking to replace with a new ford explorer.
Dependable, agile, easy to park
So-so gas mileage, stiff ride
The 2001 Explorer Sport is actually my wife's daily driver. I have custody of it for the weekend while she hauls her kayak to a Girl Scout camping event in my F-150. But, she absolutely LOVES driving "Junior". The good: we have had very few problems with Junior after my wife picked it on a used car lot with 101,000 miles already on the odometer. The dealer fixed a couple of minor issues, and we had to replace the alternator last year. Although the interior is a bit snug for my frame (250 lbs. of beefy working guy and beer gut), it's still comfortable enough for road trips. (We're taking it to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park next month.) It also has a nice, short turning radius and is easy to park. The bad: gas mileage is so-so for a V-6, considering my 2011 F-150 Super Crew 4x4 with a V-8 goes just about as far on a gallon of gas. The ride is somewhat stiff, especially in comparison to my F-150. (Keep in mind that the Explorer Sport has a very short wheelbase, and understand that you will feel every bump.) Also, the rear wiper is a piece of junk on this model year. As for one of the other recent posts about how poorly the Explorer Sport performs on wet and/or snow covered pavement, good tires make a HUGE difference. My wife & I both spun this thing in the first few months after we bought it. Upgrading the tires (currently wearing Cooper Discoverer A/T3 treads) has kept Junior pointed in the right direction whether sun, rain, or snow.
