Positive Review

"Very happy with the truck."

Best midsize truck out there for the money. It makes a fantastic work truck. I have two of them they don't make them anymore so I think we are going to go up in value. I would recommend it to a friend.

Critical Review

"DO NOT GET A QUAD CAB WITH 6 CYL"

I love this truck, but don't make the mistake that I did thinking that a 6 will be easier on gas. This beast needs an 8 to move the heavier body. Don't get me wrong I used my truck to pull a friend's one ton pickup with two engines and a transmission on a car hauler and it did just fine..it's got pull power but the gas mileage is horrible. An 8 will do better than 16mpg believe me. I love the truck, it's very comfortable and even pulling a trailer it does ok on the highway as long as you don't expect rabit starts. The mileage is awful, I thought it would be better but my eyes got opened, even towing a 10X12 covered trailer I'm lucky to get 10 mpg. Just too expensive to run with gas at 4 a gallon. About to park it and drive the bike all the time. Doesn't seem to be too many things you can do to improve gas mileage either. It's better than the Titan I nearly bought but too expensive to run when gas is high.

GREAT 2ND VEHICLE
Pros

Comfortable interior, rides very well, good fuel mileage, easy to service, great radio/cd combo.

Cons

No backup camera or cell phone connection system but I understand it can be added

This is my third Dakota but the first Laramie 4x4 with the V8. I purchased this in May of 2022 with 85,000 miles on it. I immediately started it on BG services and this vehicle has been very reliable! All the electronics work very well. The ride and handling are spot on! I am about to put seat covers on just to hide the aging wear. I keep up ALL the maintenance beyond manufacturers specifications with BG products. I have replaced the starter, battery, shocks and tires. My biggest repair was driveshaft and rearend repair. This was about $6500 but I have after-market warranty that covered all but $1000 so all good. The paint is in very good shape. Once again, I take care of my equipment. Fuel mileage is very good. Run about 17 mpg city driving and 20+ on the highway. The engine is rated at 300hp and has a lot of "getup and go". Tows VERY well which is rated at 7000 lbs but I have not gone over 6000 lbs. I highly recommend grabbing one of these vehicles. They are bound to be a classic since they are not being produced anymore.

All around best truck
Pros

Comfort, power.

Cons

Gas mileage

I have an about $170000 miles on it. It runs strong. A couple months ago I towed a Subaru Crosstrek with all my kid’s belongings from college from Thousand Oaks California to San Diego, it was a three hour trip both ways. The truck ran smooth no problems. Took the hills like a beast. Plus I’m a 300 lb guy. This truck has been nothing but good to me. It has the original engine and transmission. I love this truck.

Long lived
Pros

Very reliable

Cons

None

The 1997 Dakota is a solid nice truck. It takes a lot of abuse and has the power of a full size truck. I have had my truck for years and nothing major has gone wrong. I bought it in 2001 and everything still works. The secret is just doing the regler mantanince. I love my truck!! It now has 433790.0 miles on it and still runs like new..

Beautiful truck. Has a canvas to put on the rear.
Pros

Fun to drive and is remarkable for travel time.

Cons

None I know of

As I am unable to drive this lovely truck I must give it up. We are getting a smaller automobile to drive as my wife is still capable.

Truck review
Pros

It does handle well since the front end was rebuil

Cons

Engine has noise but will only keep it running

Truck had 99,200 miles when I bought it three years ago. I had a 2002 Dakota, which had over 237,000 miles on it. The seats in the 2006 are not nearly as comfortable and the front end has been totally rebuilt. The truck has not been abused since I bought it. The truck is rusting worse than the 2002 truck. I have had to put quite a bit of money in it, just to keep it safe to drive. I wish now that I would have found a different kind of truck.
