Volvo, long known and beloved for its stylish wagons, especially the Cross Country variants, transitioned seamlessly to the family SUV space as the market shifted away from cars. Looking for something a little different in the compact luxury SUV class? Perhaps something with refined looks, a reputation for safety, and a subtle sporty streak? Consider the 2021 Volvo XC60’s Scandinavian elegance, available all-wheel drive (AWD) in every trim, and diverse, fuel-efficient powertrains.

Buyers can find models with a 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 316-hp turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder, or a 400-hp plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The last powertrain, formerly known as T8 in previous years, was renamed the Recharge for 2021. If PHEVs intrigue you, XC60 competitor Mercedes-Benz suspended production of the GLC 350e from 2020 until 2025, the Audi Q5 upgraded the plug-in battery size in 2022, and the Lexus NX 450h+ wouldn’t be available until 2022.

However, if you look downrange, the Volvo XC60 T5 and T6 models match or beat most rivals in combined fuel economy.

Inside, the XC60 feels like a New Age sanctuary, with clean lines, a mix of tones and textures, a crystal gear selector, and an air-purification system for the cabin. Proactive safety technology keeps the XC60 between the lines and out of danger.

KBB Review Highlights

Our reviewer found the Volvo XC60 generously equipped even at the entry-level Momentum trim with such niceties as leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic moonroof, adaptive LED headlights, and more. The Inscription and R-Design trims amplify the luxury and fun factor, respectively. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard for all trims with the base T5 engine. Opt for the T6 turbocharged and supercharged mill or base PHEV, and AWD becomes standard. A Polestar Engineered edition of the PHEV powertrain comes with a range-topping 415 hp with upgraded suspension and brakes. The Polestar version was tempting, but it was a production rarity and would be hard to find as a CPO vehicle.

The driving experience was assured and compliant. The XC60 was mostly a smooth operator, but it was less so when transitioning between gas and electric power in the Recharge models.

2021 Volvo XC60 front cabin.

Our reviewer found the vertical touchscreen attractive and uncluttered the central console; however, he noted that the lack of physical controls could cause the driver to take their eyes off the road. The XC60 has several options to increase the comfort level of the roomy cabin, including heated/ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, quad-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, and premium audio upgrades.

Volvo has a serious reputation because of its longtime focus on safety, but the automaker doesn’t skimp on driving joy.
