Dodge Charger Quick Facts

Introduction

The 2021 Dodge Charger is a full-size 4-door sedan from Dodge. This simple descriptor does not do justice to the nostalgic swagger and cult following that the American muscle car excites. The Charger is the stuff of modern legend. Capable of being a family car and carrying out the day-to-day duties of a daily driver, the 2021 Dodge Charger harkens to the days of big-body sedans, drag strips, grumbly engines, and the pre-crossover fandom of the automotive landscape.

Powerfully equipped under the hood and well-appointed on the interior, even in its base form, the 2021 Charger appeals to a diverse audience. The availability of various trims at various price points with many add-ons and smile-inducing special editions makes the Charger a favorite for many. For 2021, Dodge adds all-wheel drive to the GT trim and a new 797 horsepower SRT Hellcat Redeye to the lineup.

KBB Review Highlights

The 2021 Dodge Charger adds the 797-horsepower supercharged Hemi-powered SRT Hellcat Redeye to the top of the 6-trim lineup. A nameplate that debuted in 1966, the Dodge Charger competed as a muscle car 2-door coupe through 1987. After a 19-year hiatus, Dodge reintroduced the Charger name for a full-size sedan in 2006. The model got a makeover for 2011 and a facelift for 2015. The Charger remained steadfast as a sporty option among family sedans.

The Dodge Charger stands strong with American bravado and traditional styling in a shrinking class of highway cruisers. The Charger is solidly built and matches up well with rivals like the Toyota Avalon, Nissan Maxima, and Chrysler 300. Its generous interior space, heavy-weight and low-slung body recall days when mainstream cars were more substantial, and land yachts were still a thing.

With a naturally aspirated (non-turbocharged) V6 in the base and topping out with a supercharged V8, the Charger is currently the “most powerful production sedan in the world.” Starting with the entry-level SXT and the next GT, the 2021 Charger arrives with a 292-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and optional all-wheel-drive. In the middle of the road, the R/T gains a powerful 5.7-liter V8 that endows 370 hp. For the power-hungry, the Scat Pack trim tops out at 485 hp using a 6.4-liter V8. And for those with a devilish streak, the SRT Hellcat takes a thirsty 6.2-liter supercharged V8 and delivers 717 hp. New for 2021, Dodge adds an SRT Hellcat Redeye to offer 797 hp. All Charger drivetrains use an 8-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional in the SXT and the GT.

The models and trim lines are tied to engines and scale up the line with additional comfort and convenience features. Cool is a factor in the Charger. The dash is driver-focused, and there is a nice balance between modern information and textural touches. Space is generous throughout, and depending on the trim, seating is fashioned from smooth leather, simulated suede, or a classic hound’s cloth. Dodge equips the base nicely with LED daytime running lights, 17-alloy wheels, remote start, keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 2 USB ports, a 6-speaker audio setup, a 7-inch touchscreen with UConnect 4, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

Bold colors dominate the exterior lineup, and a rainbow of stunners with catchy names like Hellraisin, White Knuckle, and Go Mango highlight the rounded nose and sweeping lines of the Charger. Wheel sizes start at 17 inches and increase as you go up the trim lines to top at the Hellcat Redeye’s 20 inches.

Dodge bundles several safety and convenience features in packages, namely the Technology and Driver Confidence. The Technology package includes safety features like forward-collision mitigation and emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning for all trims except the Hellcat models. The Driver Confidence Package offers several helpful features including blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alert. Additional features, including Alpine or Harmon Kardon sound systems, leather upholstery, and sport suspension, are also available.
