KBB Review Highlights
In its fourth generation of production, the 2021 Kia Sportage is the nameplate that launched a segment in 1995. With accessible seating for four (five if you squeeze into the second row) and more versatility than a sedan, buyers initially flocked to the Sportage for a smooth ride and budget-conscious SUV option. Shaking off its budget roots, Sportage buyers now enjoy those features, two engine options, and a stellar warranty package in an uncomplicated package.
The Kia Sportage excels in the style and comfort categories in a crowded class with the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5, and Honda CR-V. Inspired by fighter jets’ sharp lines and smooth surfaces, the new Sportage bears the fingerprints of designer Peter Schreyer, formerly of Audi. An elevated cabin looks bright and clean with logical seat and control placement and modern space configuration. Nifty cargo holds, improved seat design, and an optional panoramic sunroof add to a well-rounded package. Our editors loved that Kia retained the use of traditional knobs to access everyday functions like air conditioning, fan speed, and audio control.
All trims except the SX Turbo have a moderately efficient 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is an option across the trim lines. Drivers will enjoy the three knob-controlled drive modes (Normal, Sport, and Eco) and the forward-collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assistance that comes standard.
Passengers will appreciate the attention to detail throughout the vehicle, even in its most basic trim. The LX brings an 8-inch touchscreen, 60/40 folding rear seats, a 6-speaker sound system, and a comprehensive driver assistance package. Upgrade to the S-trim and access the luxe, blacked-out Nightfall Package. It comes dressed to impress with special badging, bigger tires, piano-black accents, wireless charging, an additional USB port, leather-trimmed seating, and keyless entry with push-button start. You must upgrade to the EX-trim if you desire heated front seats and power-adjustable driver seating. If you crave speed, lean into the SX Turbo trim with its turbocharged engine, sport suspension, Harman Kardon audio, LED headlights/taillights, and race-inspired leather interior.
