Midsize Car

Which Subaru Legacy is Right for Me?

2021 Subaru Legacy

Somewhat of a dark horse among midsize sedans, the 2021 Subaru Legacy has a lot going for it. Starting under $23,000, it undercuts most of its rivals in price, while also offering excellent resale value.

Appealing particularly to those in cold-weather climates, it also comes standard with all-wheel drive, a bit of a Subaru specialty. And lastly, despite a low starting price, it comes not only with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, but a full suite of active safety systems.

Two engine options power the 2021 Legacy. The first is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that is strong enough to keep the Legacy moving and earns 35 mpg on the highway. The second is a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with some serious oomph, getting the Legacy to 60 mph in just over 6 seconds. With all-wheel drive and a lower center of gravity due to the use of flat or “boxer” engines, the Subaru handles well, and also has a quiet ride. A Sport model adds some trim elements as well as an SI drive mode button that sharpens throttle response and makes the car a bit livelier.

Inside, the Legacy is full of quality and soft-touch materials that are comfortable as well as modern. The base models include two 7-inch touchscreens, with higher trims getting an 11.6-inch vertical touchscreen, although there are also manual knobs for things like audio volume. Standard safety features are numerous and include Subaru’s EyeSight system. Resale values are excellent.

Six Trim Levels

Every 2021 Subaru Legacy comes standard with all-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The lower four trims get the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, with the top two powered by the 2.4-liter turbo. Prices range from $22,895 for the base model to $36,145 for the top Touring XT. Add $925 for delivery to all prices. It’s worth noting that yes, the top Touring XT trim includes a CD player.

With a low starting price, the base model is still impressively equipped, with such things as a 7-inch screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, LED headlights that turn with the steering, a 4-speaker audio system with AM/FM/SiriusXM radio, Bluetooth, dual USB inputs, and an auxiliary jack. Standard safety features include the EyeSight system with lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.

Still, we suggest going one notch above for the Premium trim ($25,145), which adds a 10-way power driver seat, an 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, two rear-seat USB ports, a 6-speaker audio system, and 4G LTE connectivity with Wi-Fi.
