Which 2022 Kia Sportage is Right for Me?

2020 Kia Sportage

The 2022 Kia Sportage is the Korean automaker’s entry aimed at the heart of the highly competitive small SUV market. What it has going for it is a high level of standard equipment, plus a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The Sportage comes standard with a 2.4-liter inline-4 cylinder engine. Making 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, it is more than capable for the average owner’s daily tasks and excursions. The range-topping Sportage SX Turbo includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that produces 240 horsepower (237 hp with AWD) and 260 lb-ft of torque. It uses more fuel than the 2.4-liter engine but delivers higher performance and a more engaging driving experience.

Both engines match up to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive costs an extra $1,500. The maximum towing capacity of the Sportage, regardless of engine, is 2,000 pounds.

In basic LX trim, the 2022 Sportage begins with front-wheel drive, the 2.4-liter engine, 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, air conditioning, LED daytime running lights, manually adjustable front seats, and 60/40 split/fold/recline rear seats. Also standard are an 8-inch infotainment touch-screen display, Bluetooth, USB port, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, and a 160-watt/6-speaker audio setup.

Driver aids include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, driver-attention monitoring, and lane-keeping assistance.

Four Kia Sportage Trim Levels

The 2022 Kia Sportage is available in four trim levels: base LX, Nightfall Edition, EX, and range-topping SX Turbo.

Pricing starts at $24,090 for the base Kia Sportage LX and tops out at $33,750 for the Kia Sportage SX Turbo. All-wheel drive is available on all trim levels for an additional $1,500 on all models except for the Nightfall Edition, which is $1,700. Destination charge is $1,175.

While we appreciate the looks of the Nightfall Edition, the 2022 Kia Sportage SX Turbo is our choice largely on the brand’s affordable pricing. It’s the all-in model with every feature available on the Sportage, including the more powerful turbo powerplant. The only thing we could think of adding would be the AWD system (+$1,500) — an especially good choice if you live in a cold-weather region.
