Luxury Midsize SUV Crossover

Which 2021 Genesis GV80 is Right for Me?

2021 Genesis GV80

Brand new for 2021, the Genesis GV80 is the first crossover SUV from Hyundai’s luxury brand. Most versions have seating for five in two rows, although one model can be optioned with a small third row. That seating, though, is best for small children.

Power for the 2021 GV80 comes via a standard 300-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder or an optional 375-horsepower twin-turbo V6. The 4-cylinder model has rear-wheel drive as standard or can be optioned with all-wheel drive (AWD). All V6-powered models come standard with AWD. Even with the base engine, the GV80 feels athletic and nimble, with plenty of power for passing. There are also customizable drive modes for sport, comfort, and efficiency settings.

Handsome looks highlighted by a diamond-mesh grille are complemented by an interior that’s clean and efficient, with comfortable space. Upholstery ranges from leatherette to quilted Nappa.

Standard features are comprehensive and include a suite of driver assistance and safety features. As with all Hyundai and Genesis vehicles, the GV80 comes with a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, and also includes 3 years or 36,000 miles of free maintenance and valet service.

The base GV80 starts around $48,000 with the top 3.5T Prestige starting just over $70,000. In its first year in existence, the Genesis GV80 earned the Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award among midsize luxury SUVs.

Six Trim Levels

With a choice of either the base turbocharged 4-cylinder (in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive) or the twin-turbo V6 (AWD only), the 2021 Genesis GV80 offers three main trim levels: Standard, Advanced, and Prestige.

As a Genesis trademark is value, the base 2.5T Standard ($48,900 plus $1,025 destination) is well-equipped. It has heated and 12-way power-adjustable front seats as well as dual-zone automatic climate control, 19-inch wheels, a hands-free power liftgate, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Infotainment comes via a 14.5-inch screen, a 12-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, and four USB ports.

The GV80’s standard safety systems include lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot collision assist, and adaptive cruise control. Also included are 3 years or 36,000 miles of free maintenance, valet service, and a subscription to Genesis Connected Services. Adding AWD adds nearly $5,000 to the base price but also includes an electronic suspension.

Next up is the 2.5T Advanced, which adds a panoramic roof, wireless phone charger, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, and an excellent 21-speaker Lexicon audio system. At just under $4,000 over the Standard, we think it’s a pretty good value. The 2.5T Prestige adds leather seats, a blind-spot monitor, and massaging front seats.

Stepping up to the twin-turbo V6 in the 3.5T models gives you all-wheel drive and an electronic suspension as well as upgraded front seats. The Advanced adds leather seats and the Lexicon audio system as with the 2.5T Advanced, although there is an Advanced+ option here. This is the one that adds the optional third row of seats.

The top 3.5T Prestige includes Nappa leather, ventilated second-row seats, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, among other things.
