Ford Explorer
What’s for sale near me?
Above Average: Turbocharged engines, high-tech features, off-road capable, distinctive styling, cargo space, fuel economy
Below Average: Difficult to use control interfaces, Sync infotainment, varying reliability, IIHS small overlap crash test results
Consensus: A very flexible 7-passenger SUV with real off-road ability, loads of high-tech gear with a few questionable marks in the areas of safety and reliability.
Dodge Durango
What’s for sale near me?
Above Average: Resale, reliability, horsepower, Uconnect infotainment, towing, interior materials and features
Below Average: Aging platform, V8 fuel economy
Consensus: The family SUV for those who need big power and big towing ability, but not a full-size SUV. The Durango offers a number of sporty models and powerful engines, making it unique among midsize, 7-passenger SUVs.
The current Durango and Explorer designs date back to the 2011 model year, although both have undergone significant upgrades along the way. The two exude a type of bad boy image, but the Durango takes it one step further by offering V8 power and a number of highly stylized trims, most recently an SRT trim with a 475-horsepower V8. In 2-wheel drive, unlike the front-drive Explorer, the Durango is powered by its rear wheels, meaning it gives up some traction in snow and foul weather. But this also means it can tow up to 7,400 pounds when equipped with the Hemi V8. Both SUVs come standard with a powerful V6 engine and both offer all-wheel drive. The Explorer includes an advanced terrain management system, while the Durango offers a low-range transfer case that helps with light off-roading. On the road, the advantage goes to the Durango for its sharp handling and precise steering. Both vehicles offer seating for seven, although the Durango’s third-row seat isn’t as easy to access as is the Explorer’s. The Durango’s interior material and craftsmanship make if feel like a midsize luxury brand, and its Uconnect infotainment system is light years ahead of the Explorer’s Sync setup. The Durango holds slightly better resale values plus has slightly above average reliability and IIHS crash test scores. Both vehicles have similar factory and CPO warranty coverage.
Ford Explorer Advantages
Fuel economy, advanced AWD system, easier third-row access, high tech features
Dodge Durango Advantages
V8 power, 7,400-pound tow rating, Uconnect infotainment system, handling and steering response
Similarities
Seven passenger seating, off-road capable, powerful engine options, aggressive styling, advanced driver assists on late models, high-tech
Final Recommendation
The Dodge Durango offers power, style, convenience and plenty of room for seven passengers. It’s fuel economy isn’t nearly as good as the Explorer with its 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine, but when comparing V6 models, the Durango actually comes out ahead by about 2 mpg. Rear drive isn’t as ideal in snow as the Explorer’s front drive, but both SUVs offer excellent AWD systems for just such situations.
OK, so what’s next?
I’m ready for one of these cars, and I’d like to trade in my current car while I’m at it.
