Midsize SUV Crossover

2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV vs. 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Comparison

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) offer a nice middle ground between gas and electric because they’re powered by both gas and electrons. They’re capable of running on electricity alone, but there’s no range anxiety since there’s also a gas engine under the hood. The 2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe are a couple of interesting options in midsize SUVs with plug-in hybrid powertrains. Let’s see how they compare.

2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV

2025 Mazda CX-70 Turbo S

The Mazda CX-70 is the 2-row alternative to the Mazda CX-90. This midsize SUV has an upscale interior and generous interior space, making it a nice alternative to a luxury SUV. We love that it has an available PHEV powertrain. Pricing starts at $55,855.

Mazda CX-70 PHEV Highlights

More affordable: The Mazda CX-70 PHEV has a considerably lower starting price than the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. That puts this plug-in SUV more within reach of a wider range of hybrid shoppers.

Premium interior: Mazda SUVs have long felt a little nicer inside than their price tags suggest, and the CX-70 is no exception. A classy design, premium materials, and modern tech features give this Mazda one of the nicest cabins in its class.

A little roomier: The Mazda CX-70 PHEV has more second-row legroom and more cargo space behind the second row than the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, enhancing the Mazda’s comfort and practicality.

2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe (pronounced “four-by-e”) takes what we love about the Grand Cherokee, like its rugged aesthetics, off-road capabilities, and luxurious options, and adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain. We’re not surprised it’s one of America’s favorite PHEVs. Pricing starts at $62,285.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Highlights

Lower fuel costs: The range and efficiency ratings of these two SUVs are almost identical, but the Jeep runs on regular-grade gas while the Mazda requires premium. This adds up to cheaper fuel costs for the Jeep.

Off-road chops: The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the only Grand Cherokee variant available in the rugged Trailhawk trim, which features the Quadra-Drive II all-wheel-drive (AWD) system with a 2-speed transfer case, Quadra-Lift air suspension, Selec-Terrain Traction Management with off-road drive modes, and all-terrain tires. The Mazda doesn’t have an off-road trim quite like this.

More power and torque: The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe’s turbocharged gas engine under the hood gives its hybrid system a higher output than the non-turbocharged setup in the Mazda PHEV. The Jeep boasts 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, giving it more satisfying acceleration and confident passing power.

Conclusion

Most families will get more value out of the Mazda CX-70 PHEV than the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. The Mazda is a little cheaper, a little roomier, and just a little nicer inside, although the Jeep gets quite luxurious in its upper trims. That said, the Jeep has its advantages, like stronger performance, lower fuel costs, and the off-road talent you’d expect from the brand.
