2024 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2024 GMC Terrain Comparison

The compact SUV segment is highly competitive. You could play it safe and get one of the top sellers everyone else is driving. However, a few alternatives to the sales leaders are just as good. Two of which include the 2024 Mazda CX-5 and 2024 GMC Terrain.

Let’s take a closer look at the highlights of these compact SUVs.

2024 Mazda CX-5

Although it has not changed much in several years, the Mazda CX-5 still attracts buyers’ interest. If you add an attractive exterior with a contemporary look, an SUV becomes very appealing.

Mazda produces practical vehicles that offer excellent driving experiences. The CX-5 can tackle multiple tasks, such as hauling people and cargo, daily commuting, and other duties. Mazda engineers ensure drivers can enjoy their time behind the wheel.

With a 187-horsepower base engine, the Mazda CX-5 can be a bit of fun, but upgrade to the 2.5-liter turbo, which puts out up to 256 hp, and now we’re talking about robust performance. Additionally, the cabin is spacious and comfortable. The layout is driver-focused, and the convenience and safety technology are excellent. Pricing begins at $30,675, including destination fees.

Mazda CX-5 Highlights

Standard AWD: All CX-5 SUVs come with all-wheel drive (AWD). Dubbed “i-AWD,” the system can send power to different wheels according to what you need at the moment. It can also revert to front-wheel drive for optimum fuel economy. Front-wheel drive is standard, AWD is available on SL and SLE Terrain models, while standard AWD is available on the AT4 and Denali trims.

Recliners: While competitors may enjoy more rear passenger space, few can recline like the 2024 Mazda CX-5, enhancing comfort.

Powerful engine: Mazda’s 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine already puts out 187 hp, but moving up to the turbocharged version with premium fuel unlocks another 69 horses, upping the performance quite a bit. The GMC Terrain can’t match that output.

2024 GMC Terrain

GMC is known for making clean-looking vehicles and upgrading them to an elegant but rugged appearance. The GMC Terrain fits that bill, especially in Denali or AT4 trim levels.

Like the Mazda CX-5, it’s been wearing the same exterior for the past seven years. However, it’s due for a complete redesign next year. Despite that, it remains a handsome SUV with an impressive interior.

Available in four trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali, the front-wheel-drive SLE starts at $30,590, including the destination fee. When you climb to the Denali trim, you’ve got a 2-row, AWD, luxurious compact SUV for just about $40,000. That’s pretty good value for the premium or near-luxury segment.

GMC Terrain Highlights

Pro Safety Plus: This safety tech package bundles driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. If all else fails, it gets a 5-Star crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Quiet place: With available active noise cancellation, you can enjoy a calm ride wherever you drive. The Mazda CX-5 has a pretty quiet cabin, but it isn’t as serene as the Terrain with this optional feature.

Rough and ready: If you want your SUV to take you away from the hustle and bustle of urban or even suburban living, the Terrain’s AT4 off-road package offers plenty of capability, including off-road drive mode, hill descent control, all-terrain tires, and of course, a rugged appearance package inside and out. You must move to the Mazda CX-50 to get this off-road ability.

Similarities

The Mazda CX-5 and GMC Terrain are 2-row, 5-seat SUVs with modern tech, good fuel economy, and clean aesthetics.

Conclusion

If you want an SUV that looks tough on the outside while offering comfort and luxury on the inside, the GMC Terrain is your choice. However, if you want something fun to drive on flat surfaces, the Mazda CX-5 may be the best option here. Which is right for you depends on your priorities.
