The 2024 GMC Sierra EV is a full-size electric pickup closely related to the Chevrolet Silverado EV. Based on GM’s Ultium EV platform, not a traditional ladder frame, the Sierra EV arrives this summer in one trim configuration: The Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. As a special launch model loaded with luxury and standard equipment, this Denali Edition 1 carries a steep price of $99,495 including delivery. Two other less-expensive Sierra EVs, an Elevation and a lifted AT4, will arrive in the first half of 2025. We expect the Elevation to start at about $50,000.
A good-looking electric pickup truck, the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 has an estimated range of 400 miles. Nor is it short on power. Its two electric motors produce 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, which translates to a sprint to 60 mph in only 4.5 seconds and a max tow capacity of up to 9,500 pounds.
Available exclusively as a crew cab model with a 5-foot 11-inch bed, the new all-wheel-drive GMC Sierra EV boasts a front trunk where an engine would normally reside, plus a MultiPro Midgate (like that of the discontinued Chevy Avalanche) that allows long cargo to extend forward from the bed into the cab.
Inside, the Sierra EV interior is much like that of its Silverado EV cousin, but with finer materials more befitting of GMC’s “Professional Grade” mantra.
Let’s take a close look at the 2024 GMC Sierra EV.
Passenger Room and Comfort
As a crew cab model with four full-size doors, the 2024 Sierra EV has plenty of room for five adults with three across a back bench. That bench, though, also serves a radically different purpose: It’s the MultiPro Midgate, which folds forward to extend the Sierra EV’s bed to 10 feet, 10 inches in length, which enables the truck to carry longer loads like lumber totally flat in the back.
Being a luxurious Denali, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 features CoreTec upholstery, a quilted high-performance seating material that has a luxurious feel but better durability and stain resistance than leather. The Edition 1’s black interior is trimmed with an engineered bass wood, plus Galvano chrome accents.
Heightening the luxury feel of the 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 is a panoramic fixed glass roof that adds a welcome open-air ambiance. Standard equipment on this model, the glass roof is tinted and coated to help keep cabin temperatures comfortable while also improving headroom.
Features and Tech
As you’d expect of any GMC pickup with the Denali name, standard features and tech abound. In addition to one-pedal driving and variable brake regeneration, the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 has standard adaptive air suspension that always finds the correct ride height for the situation at hand — whether the truck is loaded or not.
Taking center stage inside is a massive tablet-style 16.8-inch touchscreen that lets you adjust the various infotainment icons as you see fit. What’s more, the screen can be split into three different displays if desired, and it includes physical buttons and a handy center volume control knob.
On top of that, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 also comes with a 14-inch head-up display and an 11-inch digital instrument panel that is highly configurable.
The Denali Edition 1 also gets a 3-year subscription to Super Cruise, GM’s autonomous driver-assistance technology that allows hands-free driving (and trailering!) on more than 400,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada. The latest Super Cruise even allows hands-free automatic lane changes, but only when the adjacent lane is clear, of course.
Our last highlighted technology in an electric truck positively bristling with other innovations is 4-wheel steering with CrabWalk. First introduced on the GMC Hummer EV, CrabWalk allows the Sierra EV, at slow speeds only, to move in a diagonal direction like a crab. By having the rear wheels point in the exact same direction as the fronts, the Sierra EV can pull out of seemingly impossibly tight parking spaces. Also, when this electric pickup takes a corner at low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the fronts, tightening the cornering line and significantly improving the turning radius.
Big Range, Fast Charging
GMC says the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 has 400 miles of range. We think that’s with the stock 22-inch alloy wheels, not the optional 24s.
Equally impressive, the Sierra EV has 800-volt DC fast charging at up to 350 kW. What does that mean? The Denali Edition 1 can receive 100 miles of charge in only 10 minutes with DC fast charging. With a Level 2 charger at home, we expect it will take about 10 hours for a full recharge.
Your Sierra EV also can be turned into a generator whenever you need electricity. When you order the accessory power bar, the Sierra EV Denali has 10.2 kW of available power. Via up to 10 power outlets (120V or 240V), you can operate your power tools or charge other electronics and accessories.
Also notable: When the truck is properly equipped, the Sierra EV’s Ultium battery can be used during outages to power essential devices or services at home for up to 21 days.
Cargo Versatility
What gives the 2024 GMC Sierra EV such outstanding cargo versatility? Its MultiPro Midgate. With the rear seat folded flat into the floor and the back glass removed, a 9-foot perfectly flat load floor is created, which means you can toss your surfboard in back and keep it safe under a lockable cover. And with the MultiPro tailgate lowered (and its load stop panel flipped up), the Sierra EV boasts nearly 11 feet of usable load floor, making it ideal for carrying a kayak or other long cargo items.
Lastly, let’s not forget there’s storage at the other end of the truck. That’s right; the 2024 GMC Sierra EV has a front “eTrunk,” or, as some people call it, a frunk. Right where you’d expect to find an internal combustion engine is a lockable and weatherproof compartment offering 11 cubic feet of storage. This front trunk, with two drains, also features a handy 120-volt power outlet.
