The GMC Hummer EV SUV might sound familiar yet fresh. It is both. The Hummer name was formerly used for military-derived SUVs that became popular in the early aughts. They attracted celebrities and common folks alike with their brawny looks and extreme off-road capability. They were also notorious gas-guzzlers. That idea didn’t fly far back then, and it wouldn’t even get off the ground in today’s world.
Now, after years of absence, the Hummer nameplate has been reborn under the GMC brand. And while its vehicles have commonalities with their predecessors — namely massive power, muscular looks, and loads of off-road capability — they don’t use a drop of gasoline. That’s because they are all electric. The GMC Hummer EV launched as an electric pickup truck and now comes the all-new 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV.
The GMC Hummer EV SUV is powered by either two or three motors, and all versions come with all-wheel drive. At its least powerful, the GMC Hummer EV SUV is rated at 570 horsepower and 7,400 lb-ft of torque. Yes, that’s the least powerful, and yes, GMC’s torque figure comes in at four digits. Opt for a tri-motor model, and you’ll get 830 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. The future is wild.
For the beast that this thing is, the GMC Hummer EV SUV’s range is impressive, ranging from 298 to 314 miles depending on trim.
Passenger Room and Comfort
The GMC Hummer EV SUV is a 2-row/5-passenger utility vehicle. Thanks to its giant exterior size, it has oodles of room within. Rear-seat passengers are treated to 39 inches of legroom, while those in front get 45.6 inches. If you are a particularly tall driver with the means to buy one of these, you won’t have to worry about cramped legs. We wouldn’t be surprised to see some NBA players piloting this vehicle.
The cabin also benefits from the vehicle’s wide width. For instance, a giant center console sits between the driver and front-seat passenger. Although 3-row seating isn’t available, the sheer width of this SUV makes it one that can comfortably accommodate three passengers in the second row.
Features and Tech
Where the old Hummer SUVs of the early 2000s were known more for their serious off-road hardware, this modern-day one is just as impressive for its technology. Standard is a12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 13.4-inch touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and Google built-in, along with tri-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, and a power swing rear gate. And we’re just getting started.
Of course, the 2024 Hummer EV SUV comes standard with active safety features such as lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. But it’s also got an ace up its sleeve with GM’s Super Cruise, which allows hands-free driving on hundreds of thousands of miles of highways in North America.
And we must at least mention the GMC Hummer EV SUV’s extraordinary off-road prowess. In addition to all-wheel drive, this brute comes with the CrabWalk feature that enables all the wheels to steer, allowing for better maneuverability at low speeds and improved stability at higher ones. Oh, it can also drive diagonally across a surface, a la a crab. Beware of soft mud, though; this SUV weighs more than 8,000 pounds.
Materials and Design
Further reflecting that this is a Hummer for the modern era, this electric SUV uses a premium leather alternative for its seating upholstery. It looks and feels nice, all while fitting well into the GMC Hummer EV SUV’s luxo-rugged interior vibe.
The cabin appears just as tough as this vehicle’s exterior, with upright dimensions, blocky forms, and extra-large everything. From the transmission gear selector to the air vents, everything inside the GMC Hummer EV SUV looks like it shops at the big and tall store.
And we can’t forget all the Easter eggs. From the grill of the speakers that show a map of the moon to its infotainment system, these little details abound. We have to imagine they delighted the designers as much as they do the drivers.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
For all its high-tech wizardry and innovative powertrain, the GMC Hummer EV SUV doesn’t forget that it is a utility vehicle that will be tasked with doing SUV stuff. In that respect, it has loads of cargo space, even behind the rear seats.
To that end, there is 35.9 cubic feet of space behind the second row. Need more? Fold the rear seats, and it opens up a generous 81.8 cubic feet. And no matter how many people or how much stuff you have in the GMC Hummer EV SUV, it features the Infinity Roof with removable panels, allowing you to create some serious open space while you explore all those wide open spaces.
