The 2024 Ford Ranger is totally redone to better compete against freshly updated rivals like the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma.

Ford’s midsize pickup is available in four main trims: XL, XLT, Lariat, and Raptor. Every Ranger has a 4-door crew cab body with a 5-foot cargo bed. The base engine, from the outgoing model, is a turbocharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder that produces 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Optional in the XLT and Lariat is a turbocharged V6 that delivers 315 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, the 2024 Ford Ranger can tow a maximum of 7,500 pounds.

Reserved exclusively for the off-road Raptor is a twin-turbo V6 with 405 horsepower. All Rangers are fitted with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and the three lower trims are available with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD). The high-performance Raptor gets standard 4WD.

While the previous Ranger was a capable truck, it was starting to fall behind the competition with regard to interior design and tech features.

How does the new 2024 Ford Ranger fare? Let’s take a look inside and find out.

Passenger Room and Comfort

Because it’s slightly wider and has a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, the 2024 Ford Ranger has about three extra inches of rear legroom. This doesn’t mean you’ll find limo-like space back there, but it’s reasonably roomy in the back, and it now compares favorably with other midsize trucks. In theory, there’s room for five onboard, but anyone perched in the middle seat of the second row will need to be small in stature or accommodating in attitude.

Other advantages of the new Ranger’s stretched wheelbase and widened track are, respectively, a smoother ride and added stability.

Features and Tech

The interior of the 2024 Ford Ranger

The biggest areas of improvement for the 2024 Ranger are its higher feature content and modernized technology.

While the XL trim is a pretty basic work truck with few frills, it comes standard with an 8-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen running on Ford’s latest SYNC 4 software, and the all-important Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Available upgrades on Ford’s midsize pickup include wireless device charging, navigation, a 360-degree parking camera, Wi-Fi hot spot, a Bang & Olufsen premium audio system, and a larger 12.4-inch touchscreen.

Some clever extras we really like include an optional self-parking aid for parallel and perpendicular spots, plus a rotary control that lets the driver choose the intended direction of a trailer. Called ProTrailer Backup Assist, the system takes over the steering and will reverse the truck and trailer to its intended location.

Materials and Design

Ford has significantly modernized the look and feel of the Ranger’s cabin. Standard on the entry-level Ranger XL are cloth seats, single-zone climate control, vinyl-covered floors, and manual front seat with 8-way adjustability for the driver and 6-way for the front passenger.

As with the optional tech items, Ford also offers a wide range of interior upgrades. These include heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and leather seating surfaces. Ford also has positioned the tactile climate controls and volume dial below the infotainment system for easy access.

Overall, we’ve found the Ranger’s cabin to be a major improvement, though still a half-step behind the quality and design found in the new Toyota Tacoma or the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon.

Cargo Room and Flexibility

Unlike its big brother the full-size Ford F-150, the Ranger is offered with only one choice of cargo bed. At 5 feet in length, it has a capacity of 43.5 cubic feet, which is slightly more than the 41.3 cubic feet you’ll find in the Chevrolet Colorado.

Handy cargo-hauling touches consist of a soft-opening tailgate that can double as a workbench, an available integrated bed step, and even a bottle opener conveniently built into the tailgate itself.

Inside there are two gloveboxes, with one hidden on top of the passenger-side dash. There are also under-seat storage bins beneath the folding second row.
